WHILE TRAVELING FROM ST LOUIS TO TULSA ON HIGHWAY 44, SHORTLY AFTER THE TOLL PLAZA AND ABOUT 40 MILES FROM TULSA, THE RIGHT REAR TIRE SEPARATED FROM THE WHEEL SUDDENLY AND WITHOUT ANY INDICATION OF PRIOR TROUBLE. I GET AN AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT WHICH INDICATES THAT THE AIRBAG MAY NOT WORK. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER, THEY PLUGGED THE CAR IN AND TOLD ME THAT THEY GOT A FAULT CODE INDICATING THAT THE AIRBAG CASSETTE REEL NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE COST WAS AROUND $355. *JB

THE FIRST INCIDENT WAS AT A PARKING LOT BOOTH. I HAD MY FOOT ON THE BREAK AND THE ENGINE RAISED FOR ABOUT TEN SECONDS LIKE IF SOMEONE WAS PRESSING THE GAS. THEY SUGGESTED I HAD MY FOOT ON BOTH PEDALS AND WANTED TO GIVE ME INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO USE ONE PEDAL AT A TIME. I DROVE THE CAR THREE MORE TIMES (LOCAL DRIVING ONLY). THE LAST TIME WAS YESTERDAY AFTERNOON. I WAS GETTING OUT OF A PARKING LOT, BEHIND TWO CARS, ALL OF A SUDDEN THE ENGINE STARTED TO RAISE AGAIN. I PLACED IT IN PARK AND THE ENGINE STOPPED RAISING. AFTER MUCH RESEARCH THROUGH THE INTER NET , TALKING WITH OTHER 2000 XJ8 JAGUAR OWNERS AND JAGUAR TECHNICIANS AND FORMER JAGUAR TECHNICIANS IT IS CLEARLY EVIDENT THAT THIS MODEL JAGUAR HAS 2 SIGNIFICANT DEFECTS! OUR 2000 JAGUAR S-TYPE 3.0L SEDAN WAS PARKED ON A SLIGHT UPWARD INCLINE WITH ITS GEAR SELECTOR IN "PARK". WHEN THE CAR WAS RE-STARTED IT COULD NOT BE TAKEN OUT OF "PARK". AFTER NUMEROUS TRIES TO MOVE THE GEAR SHIFT OUT OF "PARK", THE SHIFT LINKAGE WAS BROKEN. THE CAR HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIR, COSTING ROUGHLY $2200, PLUS THE TOWING FEE. JAGUAR CARS LTD. A SEARCH OF THE NHTSA WEBSITE FOUND 15 NEARLY IDENTICAL OCCURRENCES REPORTED TO THE ODI. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE, NOT ONLY WITH RESPECT TO STRANDING A CAR'S OCCUPANTS, BUT ALSO WITH RESPECT TO POTENTIALLY BLOCKING ROADWAYS AND DRIVEWAYS USED FOR EMERGENCY VEHICLE ACCESS AND FOR EMERGENCY EXITS. I ASK THAT THE NHTSA AT LEAST REQUIRE JAGUAR CARS LTD. TO INFORM OWNERS OF THESE VEHICLES OF THE EXISTENCE OF THIS PROBLEM AND THE STEPS THEY RECOMMEND TO MINIMIZE ITS OCCURRENCE.
