EVERYTIME THE BRAKE IS APPLIED AND THE VEHICLE HITS A BUMP, THE ABS DISENGAGES THE BRAKE AND WAITS FOR 1-2 SECONDS BEFORE ENGAGES THE BRAKE AGAIN. THIS CONVERTS TO QUITE A BIT OF LOST BRAKING DISTANCE. AS DRIVERS, WE CANNOT KEEP MONITORING THE SURFACE OF THE ROAD WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES. DURING THAT 1-2 SECOND WINDOW, THERE IS ALWAYS A SOUND SIMILAR TO SOMEONE DROPPING A BASKETBALL TO A CONCRE

BY THE TIME THE SOUND STOPS, THE BRAKE ENGAGES AGAIN. I THINK THERE IS FAULTY BRAKE MECHANISM THAT CAUSES THIS SOUND AND THE ABS FAILURE. DURING TIRE ROTATION STUDS/LUG NUTS BECAME STRIPPED WHEN REMOVING LUG NUTS. ONE OF THE STUDS BROKE LOOSE FROM ITS SEATING INSIDE THE HUB DURING REMOVAL OF LUG NUT PREVENTING WHEEL REMOVAL OR LUG NUT RETIGHTENING. ALL 12 FRONT STUDS AND LUG NUTS HAD TO BE REPLACED AS THEY WERE ALL STRIPPED. ALL 12 REAR LUG NUTS AND STUDS WILL HAVE TO BE REPLACED AS THEY ARE ALSO STRIPPING DURING WHEEL REMOVAL.

IN FACT IN A PARKING LOT WITH THE ABS OFF FROM A SPEED OF 30 MPH THE CAR WILL STOP ON AVERAGE 45% SHORTER THAN WHEN THE ABS IS STARTED. I TESTED 10 TIMES WITH EACH CONDITION (10 WITH ABS AND 10 WITHOUT ABS) AND THEN AVERAGED RESULTING STOPPING DISTANCE. THE TESTS WERER DONE ON WET PAVEMENT CAUSED BY RAIN. THE DEALERSHIP STATES THAT THEY HAVE CHECKED EVERYTHING AND THE SYSTEM IS FINE( JAN 29 1999). IF THE DEALER IS CORRRECT AND NO PROBLEM EXSISTS THE SYSTEM ITSELF IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH. SURE I CAN STILL STEER THE CAR AND THERE IS NO DANGER OF LOCKING THE TIRES (OR STOPPING THIS CAR) BUT AROUND HERE IF I STEER OFF THE ROAD IN ORDER TO MISS SOMETHING IT USUALLY ENDS YOU UP IN A LARGE DITCH OR OFF A CLIFF. A VALVE IN THE NUMBER 1 CYLINDER OF THE V6 ENGINE IN THE TROOPER BURNT OUT AT APPROXIMATELY 60000 MILES.
