I HAVE A 1999 ISUZU TROOPER THAT HAS A CHRONIC OIL CONSUMPTION PROBLEM. I HAD THE DEALER REPLACE PISTON RINGS AT 22,000 MILES BUT IT DID NOT SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCE THE PROBLEM. NO, I AM NOTICING A NUMBER OF TROOPER OWNS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM OR EVEN WITH ENGINES THAT HAVE SEIZED FROM A DIRECT RESULT OF THE PROBLEM. WHEN THE CONSUMER APPROACHED A TRAIN TRACK, ANOTHER VEHICLE BEGAN TO APPROACH FROM THE OTHER DIRECTION. THE CONSUMER STOPPED AND SHIFTED FROM DRIVE TO REVERSE TO CLEAR UP THE ROAD WAY. 1999 ISUZU TROOPER PURCHASED NEW. BEGAN EXPERIENCING EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION BETWEEN OIL CHANGES AROUND 50K MILES. REGULARLY TOOK A QT OF OIL EVERY 1K MILES. OIL AND FILTER CHANGED EVERY 3K. DEALER SERVICE MANAGER SAID THIS WAS NORMAL OIL USE FOR THIS ENGINE. AT 128K ENGINE FAILS 4 HRS FROM HOME (SEPT 2003). NEAREST DEALER IS CALLED AND SAYS IT HAS THROWN A PISTON DUE TO LACK OF OIL. WE

I HAVE A 99 ISUZU TROOPER S, AND HAVE OWNED IT LESS THAN ONE YEAR. I BOUGHT IT WITH ABOUT 51.500 MILES. IT NOW HAS 8000 MILES ON. I LIVE IN A SMALL TOWN AND I USE THIS VEHICLE FOR MINIMAL PURPOSES. GETTING MAIL, GROCERIES, ETC. SMALL ERRANDS OF THE SORT. I WAS ON THE WAY OVER TO MY IN-LAWS AND NOTICED A TICKING SOUND AND THEN THE OIL LIGHT FLASHED. THEY LIVE ABOUT THREE BLOCKS AWAY. AFTER HE ADDED THE OIL, THE KNOCKING SUBSIDED AND IT SEEMED FINE THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS AS I USED IT AROUND TOWN. THEN ON MY WAY OUT OF TOWN, IN ABOUT 20 MI, I HEARD A KNOCKING SOUND, BUT THE TEMPERATURE WAS FINE AND THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS ON. I DECIDED TO STOP ANYWAY AND TO CALL A TOW TRUCK IN FEAR OF ANY FURTHER DAMAGE THAT DRIVING MAY CAUSE. THE SERVICE STATION THAT LOOKED AT IT HAS INFORMED ME THAT THE ENGINE IS SHOT. THE ISUZU COMPANY HAS A POWERTRAIN LIMITED WARRANTY FOR A PERIOD OF 60 MO/60000, WHICHEVER IS EARLIER. I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY MY LOCAL ISUZU DEALERSHIP THAT THE "IN-SERVICE" DATE IS 03-03-99, AND THAT IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY. ALTHOUGH IT IS STILL UNDER THE 60KMI AND ONLY FOUR MONTHS OVER THE 60 MONTHS, THEY WILL DO NOTHING TO HELP. I ALSO CONTACTED THE ISUZU OWNER RELATIONS DEPARTMENT AND RECEIVED THE SAME RESPONSE. IN MY FURTHER INVESTIGATIONS, I HAVE FOUND NUMOROUS COMPLAINTS OF THE SAME TYPE OF PROBLEMS . IT SEEMS TO BE THAT THIS MYSTERIOUSLY MISSING OIL PROBLEM OCCURS IN THE 98 AND 99 MODELS. I'M CURRENTLY AT A STAND STILL ON WHAT PATH TO TAKE. MY VEHICLE IS AT THE LOCAL SERVICE GARAGE, UNFIXED . I HAVE CONTACTED THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU WITH A COMPLAINT. PULLING INTO A PARKING SPACE AT LOW SPEED I PUT ON THE BRAKES AND HEARD A GRINDING NOISE AND THE BRAKES FAILED. I CRASHED INTO A CONCRETE WALL, CAUSING FRONT-END DAMAGE TO MY CAR. THE BODY DAMAGE WAS REPAIRED (5/20-6/03/04) AND THE CAR WAS SENT TO THE DEALER TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. DEALER STATED THAT THEY COULD NOT FIND A PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKES (6/02-6/03). THEY SAID WHEN THEY DID THAT THE PISTON WAS STUCK TO THE BOOSTER CAUSING AND INTERMITTENT BRAKE PROBLEM. DEALER MADE ALL REPAIRS AT THEIR COST AND CALLED ME TO PICK UP THE CAR ON FRIDAY (6/11). I DROVE THE CAR AND ON WEDNESDAY MORNING (6/16) THE BRAKES FAILED AND I CALLED THE DEALER TO PICK UP THE CAR. THE DEALER REP CALLED ME ON FRIDAY (6/18) AND SAID THAT I HAD TO REPLACE MY REAR BRAKES BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT ISUZU PARTS (I HAD THEM DONE AT ANOTHER MECHANIC, NOT LONG AGO) AND ALSO THE ABS MODULE (WHICH I REPLACED ALREADY AT MY COST ON 6/07/02). THE DEALER SAID THE CAR WAS WORKING FINE AND RETURNED IT TO ME ON FRIDAY (6/25). I DID NOT ACTUALLY TAKE THE CAR BACK UNTIL THE FOLLOWING FRIDAY, BECAUSE THE DEALER HAD SCRATCHED THE DOOR AND NEEDED TO REPAIR. I PICKED THE CAR UP ON FRIDAY (07/02) AND DROVE IT HOME AND PARKED IT IN MY GARAGE. ON MONDAY (07/05), I BACKED OUT OF THE GARAGE AND THE BRAKES MADE THE SAME GRINDING NOISE AND FAILED TO WORK. I PUMPED THEM UNTIL THEY STOPPED AND THEN PULLED BACK INTO THE GARAGE TO PARK IT AND THEY FAILED A SECOND TIME CAUSING ME TO CRASH INTO THE GARAGE WALL. AFTER JK CHEVROLET/ISUZU SERVICE DEPARTMENT CHECKED OUT THE PROBLEM I WAS TOLD THAT THE EGR FUEL SYSTEM UNIT NEEDED SERVICE AND THAT THERE WAS CARBON DEPOSITS AND CORROSION BUILD UP WHICH RESTRICTED THE FLOW OF UNBURNED FUEL MIXTURE TO THE EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION VALE (EGR). I MIGHT ALSO NOTE THAT PRIOR TO THIS I WAS GETTING 13 MILES PER GALLON ON THIS VEHICLE.....THE ADVERTISED AVERAGE IF 17 TO 23 MPG. ISUZU REFUSED TO COVER THIS UNDER WARRANTY SINCE THEY STATED IT WAS A "MAINTENANCE PROCEDURE". QUITE FRANKLY, I HAVE OWNED MANY DIFFERENT MAKES OF CARS AND I HAVE NEVER HAD CARBON BUILD UP IN ANY OF THEM, EVEN ONE THAT HAS OVER A 100,000 MILES ON IT. IF THIS IS STARTING AT 23,800 MILES THEN WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLE? I DO NOT USE CHEAP GASOLINE IN MY CARS. I USE THE MIDDLE GRADE OF CHEVRON OR SHELL GASOLINE. WHILE TAKING WITH THE SERVICE MANAGER AT JK I LEARNED THAT HAD SEEN MORE AND MORE OF THIS TYPE OF PROBLEM WITH LOW MILEAGE ISUZU WHICH TO ME WOULD INDICATE THAT THERE IS A DESIGN PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE. AT MY EXPENSE THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT SERVICED THE EGR FUEL SYSTEM SERVICE UNITS AND REMOVED CARBON DEPOSITS AND CORROSION BUILD UP FROM THE ENGINE.
