Vehicle: 2019 Infiniti QX50 Mileage at engine replacement: 31,830 miles Date of engine replacement: August 2023 (recall-related repair) The engine in my 2019 Infiniti QX50 was replaced under recall at 31,830 miles in August 2023. Approximately 18,633 miles later, the vehicle began experiencing transmission malfunction symptoms consistent with CVT failure. An independent mechanic diagnosed the CV
... T transmission as needing replacement. I then took the vehicle to an Infiniti dealership, and they confirmed transmission issues but declined warranty coverage because the powertrain warranty expired February 28, 2025. The transmission is directly integrated with the engine in this vehicle. Following the engine replacement, the transmission began exhibiting unsafe operating behavior, including hesitation, loss of acceleration response, and drivability instability. There are widespread consumer complaints and litigation involving this engine and CVT transmission combination in the 2019 Infiniti QX50. Infiniti extended coverage for the engine but has not extended coverage for the transmission despite known reliability concerns. I am now afraid to operate the vehicle due to concern of sudden transmission failure while driving, which could result in loss of power in traffic and create a safety hazard. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate this recurring pattern of CVT transmission failure following engine defects in the 2019 Infiniti QX50.Read more

I had just gotten a safety inspection 15 days prior to this event to renew my registration. The car had been driving perfectly. Me and my wife had drove to my daughter’s school to pick her up. The school is about 10 minutes away from our home. Once we left the school we got about 3 minutes down the road and started smelling a strong electrical/plastic burning smell. Suddenly the car stalled and
... shut off. Then it cranked back up. Then it shut off. It did that several times. Smoke started pouring out from under the hood. I was barely able to get the car off the road and into a parking lot before it completely died and stopped cranking and stalling. I immediately got my family out of the car and had them run to safety. There was several other family’s with their children who had also just been picked up all around us. So I ran to car and popped the hood. There was so much electrical smoke coming out from driver side area. It appeared to be coming from the hybrid high voltage system under the ECM. I quickly disconnected the negative terminal on the 12v battery to shut down the electrical systems on the car. I have called Infiniti and I am dropping car off tomorrow to have a full inspection done to find out what happened. I am reaching out to you because I know that there is documented reports of this exact thing happening to other cars and that there was a recall R21B4 that they did a software update for. I believe that that update did not work to prevent this catastrophic event from happening. I don’t know if they will try to act like this was not related to the recall so I am trying to cover all my bases here by filing this complaint with y’all as well. I also have an open claim with Infiniti corporate. They are trying to just say that I no longer have a warranty for my car but this is a safety concern not just a warranty issue. I will be taking my car to Infiniti Clear Lake in Houston Texas tomorrow for them to look at it.Read more

I am a [XXX] woman who purchased my first vehicle on December 6, 2024, with 43,000 miles. I have driven fewer than 20,000 miles since purchase, and the vehicle currently has approximately 62,000 miles. Until January 19, 2026, I experienced no issues. I have properly maintained the vehicle and followed all recommended service guidelines. I completed three oil changes during my ownership, averagin
... g approximately every 8,500 miles. Two oil changes were performed by a licensed mechanic, and the most recent oil change and inspection were completed on November 29, 2025 at Legend Infiniti. I have receipts for all services. On January 19, 2026, while driving approximately 65 mph on a four-lane highway in Long Island, the vehicle suddenly went into limp mode and dropped to about 10 mph without warning. This created an extremely dangerous situation with a serious risk of collision. I first brought the vehicle to my mechanic, who advised me to take it to an authorized Infiniti dealership due to an engine bearing recall associated with my VIN. I brought it to the same Infiniti dealership that had serviced it two months earlier. After diagnosis, the dealership stated there was engine sludge and that I needed a new engine. They denied any connection to the recall and attributed the issue to poor maintenance. However, two months prior they completed an oil change and inspection with no documentation of sludge, engine concerns, or maintenance deficiencies. I was not informed of any recall at that time. My warranty claim was denied on the basis that sludge is not covered and that maintenance performed outside Infiniti could not be validated, despite providing receipts from licensed facilities. I am also being told there are record-access issues because the vehicle was originally sold in Canada. Given the sudden loss of power at highway speed and the known recall related to engine components, I believe this presents a significant safety concern and warrants investigation. COMPONENT/SYSTEM FAILURE: Timing chain and timing chain tensioner/guide assembly failure. The timing chain has stretched prematurely, causing the vehicle to fail to start, loss of acceleration response, check engine light illumination, and audible rattling noise from the engine compartment. The failed components are available for inspection upon request at the dealership. SAFETY RISK: The vehicle
... would not accelerate when the gas pedal was pressed, creating a dangerous situation where the vehicle could not respond to driver input. This poses a serious safety risk in traffic, highway merging, or emergency evasive situations. Additionally, the failure to start leaves occupants stranded without warning. DEALER CONFIRMATION: The problem has been diagnosed and confirmed by an authorized Infiniti dealer. The dealer determined the cause is timing chain stretching and has quoted $6,500 for repair, which includes timing chain, tensioners, and guides replacement. PRIOR WARNINGS: Approximately one week prior to complete failure, the vehicle began exhibiting a rattling noise from the engine. The check engine light illuminated. Shortly after, the vehicle would not start and would not accelerate when the gas pedal was pressed. KNOWN DEFECT: This is a documented defect. Infiniti Technical Service Bulletin ITB19-027a addresses timing chain-related diagnostic trouble codes on 2017-2024 QX60 vehicles with the VQ35DD engine. The timing chain tensioner and guide failure on VQ-series engines is a well-documented premature wear issue affecting vehicles well before expected service life. At 80,000 miles, this failure is premature and indicative of a design or manufacturing defect, not normal wear. REQUEST: I am requesting NHTSA investigate this safety defect and consider requiring a recall for affected Infiniti QX60 vehicles. Nissan/Infiniti corporate has declined goodwill assistance despite the existence of TSBs acknowledging the issue.Read more

On Friday, January 30th, I took my car into Bill Pearce Courtesy Honda in Reno NV, to get a pretty big service done for $3400. Basically the 100k service with new timing belt, spark plugs, etc. I wanted to make sure that this car would last 3-5 more years. A week later, my [XXX] old daughter took my car to the ski mountain for work and on the way, the car started making a loud knocking sound and
... started losing power. She called me in fear so I talked her through pulling off on the next exit. I met her up at the mountain and called a tow truck and had them tow to the Bill Pearce Courtesy Honda service department. The following day, which was Monday, I got a call from the service rep and he said they were going to figure out what was going on. At the end of the day I got a call stating that the computer diagnostics said the issue was there Rod Bearings and they were going to drop the oil pan the following day to see how bad the damage was. As it turns out, Honda said that the short block will need to be replaced. That’s the bottom half of the engine. This will cost more than the car is worth and I just spent thousands on maintenance. So, Honda is giving me a Goodwill discount of 50%, but I still have to come up with $3800 for the fix. After doing much research, this is a known issue for other Hondas and Acura's, but my VIN wasn’t under the recall. I feel like this is a miss on Honda’s part and now I’m out of a vehicle and cash to get it fixed. The car hasn’t been fixed yet. They are waiting for the short block part to come in.
