Safety Concern — Damage to Windshield During Manufacturer Recall Repair (Z05) My vehicle was brought to an authorized Hyundai dealership on January 14, 2026 for a manufacturer-directed paint recall repair (Campaign Z05), which required removal and reinstallation of the windshield as part of the procedure. The repair was originally expected to be completed between January 14 and January 28, 202
... 6. However, I received no explanation for the delay during that period. On February 13, 2026 — nearly one month after check-in — I was informed for the first time that the windshield had cracked during the reinstallation process while the vehicle was in the dealership’s custody. As of March 18, 2026, the windshield has not been replaced, and the vehicle remains at the dealership without this safety-critical component restored. Because the windshield is a structural element essential to roof strength, airbag deployment performance, and overall crash integrity, the prolonged failure to properly restore it raises serious safety concerns. The unresolved condition of this component creates uncertainty regarding the vehicle’s crashworthiness and may expose occupants to significant risk of injury in the event of a collision. Damage occurred during a manufacturer-mandated recall repair while the vehicle was under the exclusive control of an authorized service provider, and the vehicle has not been returned to a safe, operable condition for an extended period. This situation raises broader concerns regarding the handling of safety-critical components during recall procedures and the timely restoration of vehicles to safe operating condition. This matter is also currently under review by the Arkansas Motor Vehicle Commission (AMVC), Case #26-009, due to the prolonged inability to restore the vehicle to a safe condition. I am submitting this complaint in the interest of vehicle safety oversight and to help prevent similar situations from affecting other consumers.Read more

The car started having a sound that sounded like a bowling ball rolling around in the back. I emptied trunk space and had tires checked but there was no issue. I called the dealership and they stated they knew what it was because it was a common problem in the Hyundai Palisade. I made an appointment to come in and have it fixed, along with a safety recall for rear seatbelts. The appointment wa
... s made in early January 2026 to bring the car in on 2/2/26. When I arrived they had no record of my appointment and told me I could bring it back another day. I refused because the car has a safety issue as well as sounding like the wheel is coming off. They asked me to leave it and told me it would be a few days because they would need to order parts. The next day I got a call saying the parts for the safety recall were backordered but the suspension repair would be done by 2/5/26. I called on 2/9/26 because I had not gotten any information and they stated the parts for both repairs were backordered. I asked how long and they said 2-4 weeks. It has been 7 weeks and I still have no car. When I call to check (they have never reached out to me for an update unless I call them) I am told parts are still backordered and there is no projected date. I have now made 2 car payments on a car I can't drive. I have no rental vehicle and was not offered one. The dealership seems unconcerned.Read more

The vehicle is a Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric vehicle. There have been known issues with the integrated charging control unit (ICCU) failing suddenly rendering the car inoperative; I just took it to the dealer and they confirmed a fault with the ICCU. I am up to date with multiple prior ICCU recalls and updates. Leading up to this, a few months ago my 12V battery died unexpectedly at ~22000 miles and
... I had it replaced. The ICCU charges the 12v battery so I wondered if there was an ICCU issue but the car otherwise was operating fine. Overnight while charging with a level 1 charger at home recently, the car stopped charging overnight unexpectedly. A couple days later I plugged in to charge at home again and got a message "charging unsuccessful", and on the dash I received a message that said "check electrical vehicle system" which went away when I unplugged the car. I tried a different level 1 charger from my wife's car and received the same "charging unsuccessful" message. Interestingly that charger no longer seems to work on her car, so it's possible that my car damaged the charging unit. I then went to try a level 2 charger maintained by the city of Seattle which was operative and had power when I plugged in. On plugging in, I received the same "charging unsuccessful" message and then the light on the level 2 charger went off and the level 2 charing unit lost power. Again, it appears that the fault on my car may have damaged an external charging unit. Thankfully I was still able to drive the car to the dealer where the ICCU failure was confirmed and am in the process of replacing it (they don't have the parts in house and told me the current wait is less than a week though previously had been sometimes months). A service rep told me many customers had the failure happen suddenly with a loud "pop" while the car was in motion causing them to limp to the side of the road or leaving them stranded.Read more

I am reporting a serious safety concern involving a 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport with approximately 132K miles. While driving at highway speed, the vehicle suddenly lost power/velocity and the engine light flashed. This created an immediate safety hazard, as maintaining speed is critical in highway traffic. Within seconds, the vehicle regained power and the warning light turned off, giving the impr
... ession that the issue had resolved. Shortly afterward, while exiting the highway, the vehicle began shaking and felt as though it would stall but was able to drive home less than one mile. A mechanic retrieved misfire codes for cylinders 2 and 4. Further inspection revealed internal engine damage in cylinder 4 requiring major rebuild. A full deconstruction revealed that one of the valves in cylinder 4 had partially broken. This failure occurred with little to no warning and involved a sudden loss of power at highway speed, which could have resulted in a serious accident. The vehicle’s warning systems did not provide adequate or persistent alerts prior to significant engine failure. Over the last 6 months it began consuming oil frequently requiring weekly checks, however no warning systems or errors to indicate an underlining concern. Based on research, similar Hyundai vehicles have documented issues involving excessive oil consumption and internal engine damage without sufficient warning. This raises concerns about a potential safety defect affecting engine performance and failure detection.Read more

My wife went shopping and got into the car to leave, she started the car and put it into gear and it would not move when giving it gas it flashed some more codes at that point she called me. I restarted the vehicle got it moving and when I came to a stoplight with five vehicles ahead of me the light finally turned green vehicles started moving but when I went to move the car would not go and there was a vehicle behind me a ways back that was approaching rather fast. To the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, I am filing this formal safety complaint regarding a dangerous engine failure incident involving my 2017 Hyundai Sonata Plug-in Hybrid. Description of Incident: While traveling on CA-85 near Mountain View, California, at approximately 65 miles per hour, the engine suddenly and without warning lost all power. The vehicle began to slow down i
... nvoluntarily in active highway traffic, creating an immediate and serious risk of rear-end collision. The driver had no ability to maintain safe highway speed or accelerate out of danger. The vehicle had to be towed from the scene to the dealership. There was no warning light or prior indication that engine failure was imminent. The failure was sudden, complete, and occurred at highway speed in heavy traffic conditions. Safety Risk to the Public: This incident represents a significant and ongoing public safety hazard. A sudden, unpredictable loss of engine power at highway speed — with no prior warning — places the driver, passengers, and surrounding vehicles at serious risk of collision. This is not an isolated mechanical inconvenience; it is a life-threatening failure mode. Known and Documented Defects: The 2017 Hyundai Sonata Plug-in Hybrid has been the subject of multiple recalls and class action litigation related to engine defects. My incident is consistent with the known failure patterns documented in those proceedings. Despite this history, Hyundai Motor America has denied my warranty claim, citing missed services — a characterization I dispute, as the vehicle was serviced exclusively at an authorized Hyundai dealership whenever the onboard system indicated service was due, and no technician ever identified or disclosed any engine damage during those visits. Request to NHTSA: I respectfully request that NHTSA: 1. Open or expand an investigation into engine failure incidents in the 2018 Hyundai Sonata Plug-in Hybrid 2. Investigate whether a recall is warrantedRead more

While charging the vehicle, we heard a loud pop. After starting the vehicle there was a warning to check the electric vehicle system. The car max speed was limited to about 20mph while driving home (it was night and the dealership was closed). The following morning while driving the car to the dealership, a new warning came on to stop the vehicle. A few minutes later, a new light came on showing
... a turtle icon and the car would only go about 3-4 mph. I barely made it through the busy intersection and was able to pull over before the car completely died. At that point, nothing worked: no electronic locks, no hazard lights, or other safety measures. The car was towed to the dealership (1/2 mile away) where it was diagnosed with an ICCU and fuse failure. Due to a part being backordered, the car sat at the dealership for 86 days before being fixed and returned.Read more

The vehicle is experiencing a transmission failure that causes sudden jerking, hesitation, and loss of smooth acceleration when the engine reaches approximately 1,500–2,000 RPM. When driving under normal conditions on both city roads and highways, the transmission appears to slip or fail to properly engage or shift gears within this RPM range. When this occurs, the vehicle jerks violently and m
... omentarily loses power, creating a dangerous driving situation. This happens while accelerating in traffic and when attempting to maintain speed. The sudden hesitation and loss of proper transmission engagement creates a serious safety concern because the vehicle may not respond properly to acceleration, increasing the risk of a rear-end collision or crash, especially when merging onto highways or driving in traffic. This issue occurs regularly and has become progressively worse over time, indicating a potential transmission defect rather than a one-time malfunction. The problem was inspected and documented by Bill Luke Marana dealership in Tucson, Arizona. During their inspection, diagnostic data showed abnormal transmission input and output speed readings, confirming irregular transmission operation. The dealership marked the concern as requiring immediate attention. There were no consistent warning lights prior to the failure, despite the severity of the symptoms. The vehicle and the dealership diagnostic documentation are available for inspection upon request.Read more

This car has major oil consumption that affects the engine and catalytic converter. This can cause engine damage and stalls in driving that affect safety on the roads because the car doesn't accelerate properly. There were no warning signals to indicate this being a problem with the car, especially at purchase. This car will get an oil change and in less than a week, the oil is gone and bone dry.

As my [XXX] son was driving, his car, out of nowhere, stopped working and the steering wheel became incredibly hard to turn. It put him and other vehicles around him at risk as he was doing 50mph and his car suddenly stalled. No warning. No dash lights. It was hard for him to pull over to safety. We replaced the battery and tried to restart the car, then the engine started smoking. We immediately
... called for a tow. Our local shop said his engine seized. We then towed it to Hyundai and they confirmed the same thing, "it definitely locked right up." The car has been well taken care of, no warning signs prior to engine failure, no warning lights, etc. His car is also under 100k miles. There is literally no reason for an engine failure. In 2019 there was a NHTSA Recall 19V204, Hyundai Recall #182 ECU Software update; this was supposed to fix the issue but here we are... the engine STILL BLEW. Hyundai is refusing to help. They won't do anything. There's known issues with Hyundai's 1.6 GDI turbo engine. They should be held responsible. I contact the Hyundai dealer about my 2016 Hyundai sonata. for all I know those vehicles have recalls with engine failure/stalling due to premature rod bearing wear, fire risks from malfunctioning electric oil pumps. My car is having those exact problems with the abs lights being on and is also have problems with the VVT sprocket. And the oil I called Hyundai and they said my vehicle only has a re
... call with the JUNCTION BOX. But my car is unable to go over 60. And is unsafe to drive and the recalls with that type of model car is the same recalls I am having and soon as I've bought the car and had it for some time i am starting to have those problems so I would like to know what’s going on because it is unsafe and I can’t even drive my vehicle I also have a blinking check engine light. I’ve wanted to report this now incase risk of a fire because I’ve did my research and realize these cars that have these type of problems are known for catching on fire.Read more

ICCU went bad. Battery warning light appeared a few hours before Vehicle stopped. Vehicle was inoperable and needed to be towed.
Incident date: Mar 14, 2026
I started driving and pulled out of a parking lot onto a busy road. The ICCU had failed unknownst to me and as I was underway the car started losing power and the dashboard lit up with warnings about the electrical system. I was limited to 25 MPH for a brief time and struggled to turn off into a parking lot amongst much faster traffic. While doing this the car slowed further to 10 MPH. I limpe

If it had happened on a busier road I would have been in trouble. On the highway and it would have been extremely dangerous. It was dangerous enough as is with cars passing me 20+ MPH faster than my car could go. This all occurred with no warning, and is due to an issue with the ICCU in the car that Hyundai has known about for years and has refused to address or fix.Read more
