Incident date: Apr 3, 2026
Supplemental to my complaint filed April 18, 2026 regarding Dick's Hillsboro Hyundai (dealer code OR035). The dealership's Service Manager (Robin Farr) provided me with an HMA training report from Hyundai's internal system. Every staff member is listed at "Certified": the baseline tier. No one is above this level. No EV/HEV-specific certification is indicated for any individual. Despite this, th
... e dealership confirmed by phone they could service a 2019 Ioniq PHEV, then performed ICCU/DC-DC converter diagnostics (a hybrid electrical system procedure) and a 12V battery installation in the boot area adjacent to high-voltage components. The vehicle was returned with the hold-down bracket unsecured and retaining bolts missing which was only discovered when my car was assessed by a second Hyundai dealership after I had driven a significant distance. Hyundai's own shop manuals state: "Never allow technician to work on high voltage systems who are not wearing personal protective equipment." Hyundai TSBs for hybrid repairs require insulating gloves rated at 1000V AC/1500V DC. HMA's CPO form (HMACPO0601) requires an "EV/HEV Inspection certified technician" for hybrid-specific work. The ASE xEV Safety Standards state employers "SHALL verify" technician ability to work on HV systems. The dealership's website also claims its service department includes "Master technicians." The HMA training report shows no staff at that level. The Ioniq PHEV boot area contains HV wiring (DC 240V-360V). A loose metal bracket contacting terminals or HV wiring could cause a short circuit, arc, or fire — the type of hazard EV/HEV training exists to prevent.Read more

The car goes into limp mode in the middle of driving on the interstate or usually at higher speeds and loses speed quickly. This has put me at high risk for accidents when traveling between cities and has left me stranded on dangerous parts of the interstate at times. I have taken it to my Hyundai dealer I bought the car from and they said there is a knock in the engine and the whole engine would
... need replaced and I cannot afford that ($12k) but the car only has 125k miles on it and I want to keep it for as long as possible because it’s my baby. I do not think it has been inspected by anyone but my dealer yet but I am willing to let anyone look at it in order to get it fixed without paying an arm and a leg. The car did have some issues prior to this issue that were recalled and fixed, but this happened out of nowhere and when it does happen the engine light flashes and it goes into limp mode. The light currently stays on because of the O2 Sensor though, but that is not a big issue. I have to use a OBD2 Scanner to clear the engine knock code every time it goes into limp mode in order to drive it properly and even then it will go back into limp mode eventually. My car started having issues probably a year or two ago. I also want to note I know a girl who used to have the exact same year, make and model of car as me and had the exact same issues of going into limp mode and such so it is not just a random issue of mine.Read more

The collision sensitivity setting was on normal and had been since we got the car and until the accident. I had also been driving the car when the collision avoidance activated. The problem with this car is that it only knows to slam on the brakes and results in getting rear ended. I own a Hyundai Elantra with approximately 103,000 miles. The vehicle has developed an intermittent issue where the engine will suddenly stall while driving. This most often occurs when I am decelerating and turning, such as when entering or navigating roundabouts. At the time of the stall, multiple warning indicators appear simultaneously, including the check engine light, battery warning light,
... and a “no key detected” message. There are no prior warning signs before the failure occurs—no unusual noises, no loss of power leading up to the event, and no dashboard warnings in advance. The stall is sudden and unexpected. When the vehicle stalls, I must quickly shift into park and restart the engine. The car restarts immediately without hesitation, and all warning lights disappear. The vehicle then operates normally again until the issue randomly reoccurs. This has happened multiple times. This issue creates a safety risk because the vehicle loses power unexpectedly while in motion, particularly during low-speed turns and in roundabouts, which could increase the risk of a collision due to sudden loss of propulsion and reduced control. The problem has not yet been formally diagnosed by a dealer or independent repair shop, but based on research and similar reported cases, it may be related to an intermittent engine or electrical signal failure. The issue has not yet been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives. UNKNOWN as to the exact failed component, but the failure appears to involve a sudden loss of engine operation without warning, followed by immediate recovery upon restart.Read more

I own a 2021 Hyundai Palisade and have experienced a complete transmission failure that I believe Hyundai had prior knowledge of and failed to address. Before my warranty expired, I contacted the dealership several times to report transmission symptoms I was experiencing. I was told that because no diagnostic code had been produced at that time, there was nothing they could do. Eventually, my che
... ck engine light came on with a P0741 code — Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance. When I brought the vehicle in, the dealer flushed the transmission fluid, which came out dark and contaminated with metal particles. After running the vehicle, the fluid was still dark, indicating active internal damage already in progress. The dealership has now told me I need a full transmission replacement at my own expense. I am the second owner of this vehicle with approximately 105,000 miles. I have since learned that Hyundai issued Technical Service Bulletin #20-AT-005H-1 specifically addressing the P0741 code on the 2021 Palisade, instructing dealers to replace the solenoid and valve body harness. This repair procedure was never applied to my vehicle despite my early report of symptoms. I believe this is a known defect that Hyundai has failed to escalate to a recall, leaving consumers like me with thousands of dollars in repair costs for a problem the manufacturer was already aware of. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate this issue and consider whether a recall is warranted for the 2021 Hyundai Palisade.Read more

Dear NHTSA, I am the owner of a 2013 Hyundai Tucson. On March 28, 2026, my husband took our vehicle to Keyes Hyundai Van Nuys dealership for a recall repair. At this point, I do not feel confident that the vehicle provides the level of safety my family depends on. I have inquired about possible solutions, including a potential buyback program or the opportunity to transition into a newer Palisade that does not present these issues. My goal is simply to ensure that my family can travel safely and with peace of mind. I respectfully ask for your assistance in escalating this matter or exploring any available options that would lead to a timely and satisfactory resolution. I am reporting a pattern of systemic failures on a 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid with approximately 131,000 miles. This is my second NHTSA complaint regarding this vehicle and manufacturer. Primary Safety Concern — Engine Wiring Harness: During a recent engine replacement at an authorized Hyundai dealership, technicians identified damage to the engine wiring harness and documented in writing that t
... he owner “might have issues with drive ability.” The dealership declined to repair it under the same goodwill program used to replace the engine and returned the vehicle with this known defect unresolved. The harness directly controls engine operation, hybrid system communication, and overall vehicle control. On a hybrid vehicle, a compromised harness presents a serious and ongoing safety risk. This component is available for inspection upon request. Engine Failure: The hybrid system warning light appeared prior to failure. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealership where diagnostic code P1326 confirmed engine failure. The manufacturer acknowledged this and replaced the engine under goodwill. Additional System Failures: A pre-scan diagnostic revealed simultaneous fault codes across six systems — engine, transmission, ABS, active hydraulic booster, battery management, and motor control unit — including codes U0293 and U1004 indicating lost communication with the hybrid powertrain control module across multiple systems simultaneously. Independent Safety Advisory: A separate independent repair facility documented in writing that the vehicle presented a severe wheel hub bearing noise and formally advised of an extremely dangerous driving condition. Prior NHTSA Complaint: My first complaint to NHTSA involved this same vehicle when the manufacturer refused to provide a loaner during an extended recall-related repair hold, requiring formal escalation before they complied. The wiring harness defect remains unrepaired. The vehicle is driven daily out of necessity.Read more

My 2020 Hyundai Palisade has an excessive and dangerous oil consumption defect. The vehicle consumes approximately 3/4 of a quart of oil every 1,000 miles. At a standard 8,000-mile oil change interval, the engine loses more oil than it holds between services. At approximately 185,000 miles, my vehicle stalled on the interstate with my family inside the vehicle. Upon inspection, the engine was cri
... tically low on oil. I added 5 quarts of oil to restore proper level. Critically, at NO point prior to the stall did the low oil pressure warning light illuminate. The vehicle's oil warning system completely failed to alert me that the engine was dangerously low on oil. This is a dual failure: the engine is consuming oil at an excessive and unsafe rate, and the warning system designed to protect the driver failed to activate when the engine was in a critical state. I have reported this issue to my dealership and filed a formal complaint with Hyundai Motor America. Neither has resulted in a meaningful resolution. Hyundai's internal "acceptable" oil consumption threshold of 1 quart per 1,000 miles is significantly outside mainstream industry standards set by other major manufacturers and appears designed to deny warranty claims rather than protect consumers. This defect poses a direct and serious safety risk. A vehicle stalling on the interstate due to oil starvation, with no warning to the driver, is a life-threatening failure. I am requesting that NHTSA open a formal investigation into the 2020 Hyundai Palisade for excessive oil consumption and oil pressure warning system failure.Read more

This same incident has happened twice, June of 2025 and more recently March of 2026. My vehicle will essentially have no oil left causing my car to shake while breaking and eventually the car stalls out. The first time this occurred, my vehicle stalled out in the highway and again at a 4 way stop sign. I took it to the Hyundai dealership where an oil change, oil plug and oil filter was replaced. I
... n December of 2025, I noticed oil leaking from my vehicle, where the oil house filter was deemed the issue and was replaced. March of 2026, my car started to shake and eventually stall out again and this prompted me to check my oil levels where there was little to no oil. An oil consumption test was performed and it was noted my car is consuming 0.5 quarts of oil per 1,000 miles. Per Hyundai, this does not meet the oil consumption warranty (1 quart per 1,000 miles) and there is nothing to do for this issue at this time. My concerns are that this issue arises prior to my next recommended oil change. Also, there are no warning signs that prompt me that my oil is actually low; no dashboard warnings or notifications. I really only know this problem is occurring when my vehicle physically shows signs while I am driving. I am frustrated with this as I have to refill oil in between oil changes but also pay for the oil changes. Also, it worries me for the safety of my family while we are driving this vehicle.Read more

My Hundai Tuscon 2017 was making a whurring sound on the highway, at which time my RPM's were not going over 3. As I was looking for places to pull over on the highway, I heard a loud 'pop' and then my engine started smoking and an intense rattling ensued to where I could hear a series of parts drop out of the bottom of my car. My 2024 Hyundai Palisade has been grounded and rendered completely undrivable for 15 cumulative days as of April 21, 2026, due to an open safety recall for which Hyundai has stated no remedy currently exists and no timeline for a fix has been provided. The vehicle was taken out of service on April 6,2026. due to the open recall 292. Hyundai issued interim notification letters in March 2026 advis
... ing that the remedy is still under development. On April 21, 2026, I contacted Hyundai Motor America headquarters directly by phone. I was told that the defect is not covered and that I simply must wait with no estimated repair date. I am making monthly loan payments and paying full insurance on a vehicle I cannot drive. Hyundai has provided a loaner vehicle that is not comparable to my 2024 Palisade. I am filing this complaint because: 1.I own a vehicle with a confirmed safety defect for which no fix exists. 2.Hyundai has provided no timeline for resolution. 3.I am suffering ongoing financial harm — loan payments and insurance — on an undrivable vehicle. 4.Hyundai headquarters has verbally refused to take responsibility. I am requesting that NHTSA pressure Hyundai to expedite the recall remedy and provide relief to affected owners who cannot use their vehicles. I am also pursuing my rights under the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act due to Hyundai’s failure to repair a warranted defect within a reasonable time. I am available to be contacted for follow-up by NHTSA investigators. Thank you [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)Read more

Vehicle is a 2025 Hyundai Palisade subject to Hyundai Recall 292, concerning improper deployment of the third-row side curtain air bags in a crash, in noncompliance with FMVSS 226 (Ejection Mitigation). Per Hyundai's recall notice, the remedy is still under development and no repair is currently available. The manufacturer has advised owners to continue driving while awaiting the remedy. The safe
... ty concern is significant because an infant is regularly transported in the third row of this vehicle. In a side-impact crash, improper side curtain air bag deployment increases the risk of injury or occupant ejection — a risk that falls directly on the person seated in the affected row. With no remedy available, owners have no means to mitigate this risk other than ceasing to use the third row entirely, which is not a reasonable long-term solution for a three-row SUV purchased specifically to accommodate additional family members. Regarding the specific guideline questions: the defect is a manufacturer-identified noncompliance and has not been (and cannot be) reproduced or inspected by a dealer, because no diagnostic or repair procedure exists. There are no warning lamps or pre-failure symptoms, as the defect would only manifest in the event of a crash. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance, as no crash has occurred. I am filing this complaint to formally document the safety risk while a remedy remains unavailable, and to request that NHTSA prioritize expedited development and deployment of the fix.Read more
