I called the Hyundai corporation and they advised to bring the car to the Hyundai repair shop- the car was then inspected in the shop - found some " lower rod bearing failure" but the Hyundai denied a Goodwill claim because of some maintenance neglect which has not been true - they had all our oil change receipts - I am the original owner - bought the car in finance and overall paid it off in 5 years - the car cost me 30K brand new- we were changing oil as soon as the message for the need to change oil would come up - every 5 - 5.5 K miles, all the records have been sent to the corporation, they have just said " neglect" out of the blue...They have denied the Goodwill engine replacement based on that falsely stated "neglect." I see there have been recalls for the oil ring piston issues in Konas including 2019 - for the engines 2.0L Nu MPI- the cylinders would start knocking from some overheat of the ring. Our engine is 1.6 GTI - but the engines are related, and our problem seems to be the same as in that 2.0L Nu MPI engine. Please, look for the similar cases for those Kona GTI Turbo engines for 2019- the one we have, seems that our Kona is fitting into the profile of those defected engines and the recalls like the one under the number 21V 301 203. On December 22, 2024, I went out at 8 AM to have breakfast with my dad. On the way back, I noticed my car starting to slow down, and the "turtle mode" activated. Normally, this mode only occurs when the battery level is under 1%, but my battery was at 75%. When the towing company arrived, they found they couldn’t turn the car on and had to use a wheel-lift tow method. Unfortunately, I had to wait nine hours for the car to be towed. The car was dropped off at the dealership on December 22, 2024, but it wasn’t checked until December 31. By the end of the first week or early in the second week of January, I was informed that the replacement ICCU (Integrated Charging Control Unit) had arrived. However, due to the dealership's schedule, they said they wouldn’t begin the installation until the following Tuesday, with hopes of completing the work by the end of that week. This incident was especially frustrating because I had already experienced an ICCU failure in January 2023, just nine months after purchasing the vehicle. Shortly afterward, the vehicle began moving jerkingly forward, and the oil, engine, and battery warning lights illuminated on the dashboard. Due to the failure, I had to exit the vehicle and physically push it to the side of the road in cold, rainy conditions with reduced visibility, creating a risk of being struck by oncoming traffic. Strangers who assisted in moving the vehicle also placed themselves at risk. A certified mechanic has since confirmed that the engine has locked up and identified this as a known issue with Hyundai engines. Prior to this incident, the only warning sign was the oil light briefly flashing while driving on an uneven road surface. The adjustment on the steering column for telescopic/up/down adjustments doesn't hold the steering wheel in place, even under light pressure like trying to honk the horn, the column just pushes in. Since the column cannot stay in place under light pressure, it won't stay in place if the driver's airbag is deployed possibly causing severe injury or death. The manufacturer sent me a letter about a recall and in the letter stated that this should be fixed promptly because the defect could increase the risk of a crash. I called my local dealership and they could not provide me with an appoinment for 3 months. When I told them that I was worried about risk of crash they dismissed that and told me that they had not heard of a crash from this problem.
... I called Hyundai and filed a complaint, case #[XXX]. They also called the dealership and they could not get a sooner appointment but they offer for me to drop the car off and leave it for 7-10 days and they would get to it when they could. They would not give me a loaner car, that would be at my expense. I feel that this delay could potentially cause me to have an accident and injure myself and possibly others. In order to get it done sooner it would cost me a rental car. This repair is supposed to be done in a timely fashion and at no expense to me. Hyundai could not resolve my issue. This is a serious loss of total motive power, which I've reported to Hyundai Corporate, and dealerships for repair before, to which they say " we can't duplicate, all systems are fine", and blame me for the problem. Hyundai has washed their hands of this dangerous situation and won't help me. This is the 5th occasion of this problem, I now know from my experience and reading Hyundai forums this issue is wide spread among Hyundai Tucson and Santa Fe hybrids, with some places replacing parts, that doesn't fix the issue. I know how to react by pulling over immediately, shut off the vehicle completely, wait... Then restart the vehicle, and so far ,it will drive normal with no codes or warnings after that, until the next random occasion it happens.
