Dear NHTSA, I am filing this complaint to formally report a serious vehicle safety hazard and to express concern over how Hyundai/Genesis has handled it. My 2016 Hyundai Genesis 3.8 AWD experienced a n engine compartment fire originating from the starter motor, which subsequently melted the engine wiring harness and surrounding components. This fire could have easily caused serious injury or death
... , as it occurred shortly after starting the vehicle. Fortunately, I was able t o shut the vehicle off and get t o safety before the flames spreadThe dealership and Genesis Customer Care opened a case (Case #41642221) but later informed me that this was "not related" to the existing Hyundai/Genesis recall involving the same starter and wiring harness fire risk. Their explanation was that my incident was merely a "coincidence" - despite the identical cause and symptoms described in the recall documentation. This reasoning is unacceptable, irresponsible, and ignores the fundamental issue: the fire originated from the starter, the same component already known t o have a fire-related defect. Dismissing a near-identical safety incident as unrelated poses a severe public safety concern and suggests Hyundai/Genesis may be avoiding accountability for additional affected vehicles outside the recall's VIN range. I believe this defect and the manufacturer's response warrant a n urgent NHTSA investigation into the scope of the existing recall and whether it should be expanded. This issue is not only mechanical but life-threatening, as an engine fire caused by electrical failure could easily occur while driving or in an occupied area. Please investigate this issue and ensure Hyundai/Genesis takes full responsibility for this defect before someone i s seriously injured or killedRead more

On three occasions my car has initiated automatic emergency braking while I was driving across the same grated bridge deck (Montlake Bridge in Seattle). This also created a safety risk because I could have been rear ended as there was so reason
... to suddenly stop and certainly was shocked to have my car brake urgently and restrain me suddenly with seatbelt. My best guess is that this related to boats traveling under the bridge as this happened three times during higher boat traffic. I am submitting this complaint regarding a severe and widespread paint peeling/delamination defect on my 2018 Honda HR-V, which is painted in the White Orchid Pearl (NH-788P) color. Nature of the Defect: The exterior clear coat and base coat are separating from the underlying primer, resulting in large, unsightly patches of paint peeling and flaking off the vehicle's body panels. This is a clear
... manufacturing adhesion failure, not damage due to wear, tear, or external environmental factors. Manufacturer Acknowledgment: American Honda Motor Co., Inc. previously acknowledged this defect by issuing a Warranty Extension (Technical Service Bulletin 19-064, issued August 29, 2019) for specific models, including the 2016-2018 HR-V, extending the warranty coverage for this specific paint problem to 7 years from the original date of purchase with no mileage limit. The Current Issue: My vehicle has recently begun exhibiting this peeling condition, which is consistent with the defect covered under TSB 19-064. However, I have been informed by the dealer/Honda Customer Service that the 7-year warranty extension period has expired as of 2024, and they are refusing to cover the cost of the necessary repainting, which can cost thousands of dollars. Request for Action: The underlying problem is a manufacturing defect that exists for the life of the vehicle and is only now manifesting due to premature failure. Limiting the remedy to a seven-year period is inadequate for a defect that is inherent to the production process and directly affects the vehicle's structural integrity over time (potential for rust exposure). I respectfully request that the Office of Defects Investigation review the data related to this known manufacturing defect (Honda White Pearl Paint Peeling, TSB 19-064) and consider the following actions: Re-open or Extend the Investigation: Investigate the ongoing nature of this failure and the adequacy of Honda’s limited remedy. Earlier this year, I filed NHTSA ID 11663872 when I noticed moisture collecting in the brake light assembly on my truck and Ford called this "normal", despite earlier issuing a recall for this very thing happening under NHTSA action 23V-418. Now, the brake light has failed completely, and Ford is denying coverage of this under my extended warranty with the following explanation: "your claim is d
... enied due to water intrusion. A subject matter expert advised that Ford and Lincoln Protect will not participate in this claim as the lighting option only covers electrical failures on incandescent bulbs, halogen bulbs, High Intensity Discharge (HID) and [Light-Emitting Diode] LED lamp assemblies. A mechanical failure of a lamp assembly that allows water intrusion (fogging/moisture) is not a covered failure. A resulting electrical failure from this moisture/water would be consequential to the mechanical failure and would not be covered." Having inoperable brake lighting and possibly reverse lighting as well is an obvious danger to the public and there is no messaging system in the vehicle to tell you those components are not working properly, and clearly the previous recall campaign that replaced the lens assembly the first time did not work.Read more

My 2024 Volkswagen Atlas SE began collecting visible moisture inside the rear tail light assembly less than 18 months after purchase. Over time, this led to intermittent lighting failure, sometimes the lights function, sometimes they don’t. This is a safety concern, especially at night or in poor weather. After researching the issue, I found that this is a widely reported problem among VW Atlas
... owners and has even been referenced in VW’s own Technical Service Bulletin 94-22-01, which is published in the NHTSA database. The bulletin calls this “normal condensation,” but this is beyond that there is visible water pooling and electrical malfunction and I know of others who report the same thing. VW is down playing this to avoid the recall. Despite being under extended warranty, this is not covered because VW considers it cosmetic unless there’s proven seal failure. The vehicle is available for inspection and has been evaluated by a certified VW service center. Volkswagen needs to address this as a design or sealing defect, especially when it affects vehicle safety systems like brake and signal lights.Read more

Wiring harness under fuse box is not making a consistent connection and is causing the blower amp to overheat and disconnect. When this happen, cabin air doesn’t blow and the front and rear defrost stops working. The only way to make the blower engage is by removing the fuse box cover and tapping the 30 amp fuse things. I’ve taken my car to the dealership for this specific problem 5 separate t
... imes, and it was supposed to be corrected. Due to this poor connection, I am now about $1200 into repairs / replacing parts that aren’t the root cause. I am not taking my car back to the dealership for a 6th time to have it “fixed” but the service guy looked me in the face and said “you should trade it. We see this issue all the time in sonatas and elantras. It won’t be fixed”. I’ve replaced the blower motor, had the Freon charged, this is one of the vehicles with the exploding gas tank, and I’ve already paid to replace gaskets.Read more

In December 2024, my 2018 Hyundai Sonata went into limp mode after the knock sensor was triggered. This happened when my son was driving home from school. I took it to my local mechanic and he said the car was low on oil. We put more oil in it and reset the sensor. In March, the knock sensor was triggered and it again went into limp mode while my son was driving back to school. We took it in
... to a shop and it was again low on oil. Oil was added and then the sensor was reset. The sensor went off again later in March and our mechanic told us to take it to Hyundai and have it checked for the rod bearing issue common with this model and year of Hyundai. He cleared the error and when I contacted the dealer, they said they needed the warning lights on to do a diagnosis. The car was driven for 4 months and the knock sensor went off again. I took it to the dealer and they checked the bearing clearance and it passed the test. The oil was also low and the dealer recommended doing a combustion chamber clean. I spent $564 to get the combustion chamber cleaned. Less than three weeks later, the knock sensor went off again. I took it to the dealer and they measured the bearing clearances and they came back as "passed". I elevated the complaint to Hyundai and they responded that they will defer to the dealer technicians' recommendations and findings and did not offer to do anything to help. The dealer the drove the car to see if they could trigger the knock sensor which was unsuccessful. After expressing my disappointment and dissatisfaction, the dealer said there was nothing else they could do and the car was returned to me. I am concerned with the safety of this vehicle as entering Limp Mode on a highway represents a safety issue that Hyundai does not seem to be concerned about.Read more
