I HAVE AN HARLEY DAVIDSON FLSTCI 2002. I HAD A NEED TO OPEN THE FUEL TANK UP FOR MAINTENANCE. WHEN I OPENED IT I FOUND THAT THE LINER INSIDE THE FUEL TANK HAD COME LOOSE OVER 80% OF THE TANK. THIS WAS STARTING TO BREAK APART INTO SMALL PIECES AND HAD STARTED PLUGGING THE FUEL FILTER. THERE ARE LOOPS ON TOP OF THE SMALLER BAG TO SECURE OTHER CARGO TO, WHICH WE DID. WE PUT TWO APPROX $400 LEATHER JACKETS STRAPPED ON TOP LIKE WE WERE SHOWN. THIS PROCEEDED TO COMPLETELY LOCK UP THE REAR TIRE AND BRAKE, PROVIDING A REAR WHEEL SKID AND FISH TAIL OF BOTH TIRES AT 70 MILES PER HOUR. THIS CAUSED BOTH JACKETS TO GO UP IN SMOKE, THE TIRE PARTIALLY MELTED, AND PUT A GROOVE IN IT THEREBY DESTROYING THE TIRE. WE HAVE PICTURES OF THE DAMAGE, AND TRIPLE CHECKED EVERYTHING ABOUT HOW WE HAD OUR STUFF SECURED, AND WE HAD IT EXACTLY AS WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO AT THE DEALER. ALL THE PERIODICALS AND HARLEY DEALERSHIPS ARE TOUTING THAT THIS BOTTOM END SHOULD LAST 100,000 MILES EASILY. HOWEVER, IF MY OWN PERSONAL EXPERIENCE AND THE EXPERIENCE OF NUMEROUS HARLEY OWNERS ON THE INTERNET ARE ANY INDICATION THEN THERE ARE A LOT OF MOTORCYCLE ENGINES OUT THERE REQUIRING A REBUILD WELL BEFORE 100,000 MILES. I HAVE WRITTEN TO HARLEY DAVIDSON AND ASK THEM TO REIMBURSE ME THE $1,000 I SPENT TO HAVE THE BOTTOM END REBUILT WHICH DID NOT INCLUDE THE COST OF ADDITIONAL PARTS AND TIME BY DOING MOST OF THE WORK MYSELF. SACRAMENTO HARLEY DAVIDSON IS UNWILLING TO PROVIDE PROOF OF PRE-PURCHASE SAFETY INSPECTION OR ANY OTHER RECORDS THAT PERTAIN TO THE BIKE. I CANNOT EVEN GET IT FIXED AND NO ONE WILL LOOK AT IT WITHOUT A HEFTY FEE. I WAS SEVERLY INJURED IN THE CRASH. I FRACTURED MY L-4 VERTEBRAE AND RUPTURED A DISC. I ALSO BROKE MY LEFT COLLAR BONE AND HAD MASSIVE ROAD RASH ON MY BACK, ARMS AND LEGS. I WAS IN A MAJOR TRAUMA CENTER HOSPITAL IN OUR AREA FOR 6 DAYS. WHILE OPERATING MY MOTORCYCLE, THE ENGINE BEGAN SPUTTERING AND THE ODOR OF GASOINE FUMES BECAME OVERWHELMING. I LOOKED DOWN AT THE AIR INTAKE AND NOTICED GASOLINE SPRAYING ON THE ENGINE AND PAST THE AIR INTAKE. IT WAS QUITE FORTUNATE THAT THIS DID NOT RESULT IN A FIRE! THE FUEL LINE HAD SEPARATED FROM THE CONNECTOR ON THE FUEL RAIL AND THE FUEL PUMP WAS SUPPLYING FUEL AT THE FULL DELIVERY RATE.
... INSPECTION OF THE FUEL LINE SHOWED THAT THE FUEL LINE WAS A HARDENED PLASTIC LINE (COVERED BY A PLASTIC CORREGATED HEAT SHIELD) THAT WAS HELD IN PLACE BY FRICTION ONLY, THERE WERE NO CLAMPS USED. BECAUSE THE FUEL LINE WAS A HARDENED MATERIAL, WITHOUT ELASTICITY OR RETAINING HARDWARE, THE VIBRATION OF THE ENGINE (AND MOST LIKELY THE HEAT AS WELL) DETERIORATED THE ADHESION OF THE CONNECTION RESULTING IN THE SEPARATION. THIS WAS A USED MOTORCYCLE, BUT IT ONLY HAD 638 MILES AND NO EVIDENCE OR RECORD OF MAINTENANCE IN THIS AREA. THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED BY THE DEALER USING HARLEY-DAVIDSON'S PART LIST WHICH INDICATED 1/4" RUBBER FUEL LINE PROTECTED BY A CORREGATED PLASTIC COVERING FOR HEAT ISOLATION, AND TWO CRIMPED HOSE CLAMPS FOR RETENTION, ONE ON EACH END.
