TRAVELING NORTH ON HWY 101 NEAR KING CITY I RODE MY 2006 HARLEY DAVIDSON ROAD KING CLASSIC OVER AN ASPHALT PATCH AT APPROX 70 TO 75 MPH. THE FRONT END BEGAN TO WOBBLE VIOLENTLY. I THOUGHT I HAD A FRONT TIRE BLOW OUT. I SLOWED TO APPROX. 45 MPH BEFORE I COULD REGAIN CONTROL. TWO RIDERS BEHIND ME WITNESSED THE EVENT AND WERE SURE I WAS GOING DOWN. THIS ON A BIKE WITH LESS THAN 4000 MILES ON IT. L
... OOKING ON THE INTERNET I SEE THAT THIS HAS BEEN A PROBLEM WITH OTHER RIDERS AS WELL AND IN ONE CASE LED TO THE DEATH OF A STATE TROOPER. I WENT TO MY DEALERSHIP AND TOLD THEM OF THE EXPERIENCE WHICH THEY PROMPTLY TOLD ME THEY HAD NEVER HEARD OF SUCH A THING. I HAVE AN APPOINTMENT ON MAY 30TH TO HAVE IT SERVICED. HOPEFULLY THEY WILL PINPOINT A CAUSE HOWEVER I GET THE FEELING THEY ARE GOING TO BLOW ME OFF. I FEEL THAT THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS CONDITION THAT HAS BEEN ALLOWED TO CONTINUE PROBABLY DUE TO SETTLEMENT REQUIREMENTS THAT THE PLAINTIFF REMAIN SILENT ABOUT THE ENGINEERING DEFECT. I WANT TO GO ON RECORD NOW SO IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO ME HARLEY DAVIDSON CAN'T SAY THEY WERE NOT MADE AWARE OF ANY PROBLEMS. WHILE RIDING MY MOTORCYCLE (2003 HARLEY DAVIDSON XL1200C) MY LEFT MIRROR BROKE OFF AND SINCE THE LEFT TURN SIGNAL IS ATTACHED TO MIRROR CAUSED THE LIGHT TO BREAK AND HAD TO HOLD IT FROM DAMAGING THE GAS TANK. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF A 1999 HARLEY ROAD KING/FL FAMILY CYCLE. I HAVE HAD THE REAR FORK SWING ARM BREAK AT THE AXLE THROUGH HOLE SLOT ALMOST PUTTING ME IN THE BUSHES. THE SWING ARM IS MADE OF 1/8X1X2 INCH RECTANGULAR STRUCTURAL TUBING WITH THE SIDE WALL(2") SLOTTED SO THAT LITTLE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY REMAINS. IN ADDITION:1. THE VEHICLE POWER PLANT HAD INCREASE HORSEPOWER THAT YEAR AND NO MODI

THE SHOCK ABSORBER BOTTOM MOUNT IS TO THE REAR OF THE SLOT SO THAT IT CANTILEVERS EACH TIME THE SHOCK RETRACTS/EXTENDS AND IN ADDITION THE BELT ADJUSTER IS AT THE AXLE POINT AND MADE OF ROUND TUBING INSIDE THE SWING ARM ACTING AS A FULCRUM POINT. THIS LEADS TO TORTIONAL AND TORQUE LOADS EXCEEDING THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY/STRENGTH ODF THAT SECTION. IN PREVIOUS YEARS THE SWING ARM WAS ROUND WITH A CASTING END AND THE SHOCK MOUNT FORWARD OF THE "FULCRUM" AXLE POINT. IN LATER YEARS THE SWING ARM WAS CHANGED GAIN DUE TO I BELIEVE EXCESSIVE FAILURES. I ASKED HARLEY TO ASSIST REPEATEDLY IN THE REPLACEMENT OF A CYCLE WITH ONLY 30K MILES. THEY REFUSED AND WOULD NOT FORWARD REQUESTS UP THE LINE OR TO THE ENGINEERING DEPT. AND REFUSED TO ALLOW ME TO REQUEST ANY RELATED RECALL OR SERVICE BULLETIN REGARDING THIS. IT IS A POOR DESIGN, DUE TO THE CUTAWAY OF THE SIDE WALL AND THE LOCATION OF THE SHOCK MOUNT, WHICH EXPONENTIALLY INCREASES THE LOAD PLACED AT THE SHOCK POINT ACCORDING TO PASSENGER WEIGHT, ACCELERATION AND TERRAIN. I HAVE FOUND THAT THERE IS AT LEAST ONE AFTERMARKET COMPANY THAT HAS DEVELOPED A THIRD MOTOR MOUNT FOR THE BIKE THAT IS PLACED ON THE REAR OF THE TRANSMISSION. THIS REDUCES GREATLY THE AMOUNT OF LEVERAGE AVAILABLE AND KEEPS THE WHEELS IN LINE. I HAVE USED THIS AND HAVE NOT HAD ANY FURTHER PROBLEMS WITH THE HANDLING OF MY BIKE. I BROUGHT THE MOTORCYCLE TO MY DEALER, NORTH TEXAS HARLEY DAVIDSON, ON MARCH 13TH TO HAVE A TRANSMISSION OIL LEAK FIXED UNDER THE WARRANTY WHICH WAS SET TO EXPIRE ON MAY 14TH. THE LEAK WAS REPAIRED AND I WAS CHARGED THE $50 DEDUCTIBLE. I PICKED UP THE MOTORCYCLE AT ABOUT 6:00 PM. I DROVE IT THE 4 - 5 MILES FROM THE DEALER TO MY HOME AND PARKED IT IN MY GARAGE. I WAS SHOCKED BY THE FACT THAT I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED DRIVING HOME BY A MANUFACTURING DEFECT OR DAMAGE CAUSED WHILE AT THE DEALER. I CERTIFY TO YOU THAT THE MOTORCYCLE WAS NOT IN THAT CONDITION WHEN I BROUGHT IT INTO THE DEALER. THE DEFECTIVE PART MARRED THE TIRE, SCRATCHED THE ALUMINUM PORTION OF THE REAR AXLE, AND DAMAGED THE BELT. THIS TYPE OF COMPONENT FAILURE COULD HAVE BEEN LIFE THREATENING AS THE HANGING INSIDE PORTION OF THE PULLEY RUBBED AGAINST THE SIDEWALL OF THE TIRE AND COULD HAVE BECOME LODGED IN THE REAR WHEEL SPOKES. AT THE TIME OF THIS WRITING, NEITHER THE DEALER OR HARLEY DAVIDSON WAS WILLING TO DO ANYTHING. HARLEY DAVIDSON STATED THAT IT WAS NOT THEIR PROBLEM BUT A DEALER PROBLEM. AT 25000 MILES THE FRAME CRACKED ON MY HARLEY DAVIDSON ULTRA CLASSIC. THIS RENDERED THE BIKE UN-DRIVABLE. IT DID NOT RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT, BUT COULD HAVE RESULTED IN LOSS OF CONTROL. THE DEALER SAID THE WELD WAS DEFECTIVE ON THE FRAME. THE ONLY POSSIBLE FIX WAS TO REPLACE THE FRAME. IT COULD NOT BE REPAIRED SAFELY. *NM

HARLEY-DAVIDSON CAM BEARING FAILURE ON 1999 TWIN-CAM88 & TWIN-CAM88B ENGINES. THIS WAS IDENTIFIED BY HARLEY-DAVIDSON AND A DESIGN CHANGE WAS MADE TO THE CAM BEARING ON DECEMBER 14, 1999. A FIX KIT WAS EVEN PREPARED AND MADE AVAILABLE TO ALL DEALERS. MY 1999 FXDWG CAM BEARING FAILED AND CAUSED OTHER PARTS TO BECOME WORN AS WELL, WHICH IS PUTTING ME IN THE SITUATION OF HAVING TO PAY $3200 TO GE

I'VE READ OTHER "RECALLS" ON THIS SITE AND NOTICED THAT ONE OF THE RECALLS ONLY AFFECTED APPROXIMATELY 14000 BIKES (IT WAS AN ENGINE COOLING ISSUE) AND I'M CURIOUS AS TO WHY A RECALL WASN'T ISSUED ON THIS ISSUE WITH THE CAM-BEARING. I JUST SPOKE TO A HARLEY REP WHO WAS VERY SHORT ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND SAID "IF THIS WERE TO FAIL ON YOUR BIKE, YOU WOULDN'T BE GOING 50 MILES". ASIDE FROM THE "COST" ISSUE HERE, THERE IS CERTAINLY A SAFETY ISSUE IF THE ENGINE WERE TO SEIZE UP AT 65 MPH, ONE WOULD MOST CERTAINLY BE DEAD.
