I PURCHASED A 2005 HARLEY DAVIDSON ROAD KING LAST YEAR. I WAS DRIVING MY BIKE AND HAD NOTICED THE FRONT TIRE WOBBLE WHILE I WAS RIDDING EVERY NOW AND THEN. I TOOK INTO SAN JOSE HARLEY DEALERSHIP TO GET MY SECOND SERVICE AT 5K MILES AND EXPLAINED THAT MY BIKE WOULD WOBBLE FROM TIME TO TIME. A WEEK AFTER GETTING MY BIKE OUT OF THE SHOP, I WENT FOR A RIDE. I WAS SOMEHOW ABLE TO HOLD ON AND SLOW DOWN UNTIL IT STOPPED AND THEN PULLED OVER. I HEARD STORIES THAT MOST PEOPLE DO NOT MAKE OUT OF THAT SITUATION SO LUCKY. ANYWAY, SAN JOSE HARLEY INSPECTED MY BIKE AND SAID THE RIM'S SPOKES IN THE REAR WERE ALL LOOSE. AT 5K MILES ON A NEW BIKE, I THINK THAT IS A DEFECT. THEY TOLD ME HARLEY WILL NOT WARRANTY THE RIM. ANYWAY, LONG STORY SHORT, THEY MENTIONED ALSO THAT THEY GET SEVERAL OF THESE PROBLEMS IN. THAT MEANS A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO COUGHED UP A TON OF MONEY TO BUY A HARLEY COULD HAVE THEIR LIVES IN DANGER IF THEY DON'T CHECK THE SPOKES. AFTER FINAL DESTINATION TO A RESTAURANT, NOTICED UPON INSPECTION THE UPPER PART OF THE RIGHT REAR SHOCK WAS INVERTED. CLOSER INSPECTION REVEALED THE UPPER SHOCK BOLT JUST BELOW THE SEAT WAS SEPARATED IN HALF AND HANGING ON BY THE SLEEVE OF THE BOLT INSIDE THE THREADED HOLE OF THE FRAME. THIS HAD TO

NOW THAT THE ORIGINAL WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED MY LOCAL HARLEY DEALER STATED THEY FOUND THE PROBLEM AND THE CAUSE IS A BAD IGNITION MODULE, BUT REFUSES TO REPLACE IT AT NO CHARGE (PART & LABOR OVER $400) BECAUSE THERE MANUFACTURERS "EMISSIONS COMPONENTS" WARRANTY IS 18,000 MILES OR 3 YEARS. MY BIKE NOW HAS 36,000 MILES ON IT AND IS 3 YEARS OLD. I HAVE ALSO FOUND THAT THE PART NECESSARY TO REPAIR THIS PROBLEM IS CURRENTLY ON NATIONAL BACKORDER THROUGH HARLEY DUE TO AN OVERWHELMING DEMAND FOR REPLACEMENTS (HARLEY PART # 32466-98A). THEY BIKE WAS PURCHASED NEW IN CALIFORNIA IN AUGUST OF 2003. I WAS INFORMED BY THE EPA THAT, IN CALIFORNIA, ANY NEW VEHICLE PURCHASED IN CALIFORNIA SINCE 1995, THAT HAS AN EMISSIONS RELATED COMPONENT FAIL, MUST BE REPAIRED BY THE DEALER AT NO COST TO THE CONSUMER FOR 8 YEARS OR 80,000 MILES WHEN THE REPAIR COST IS MORE THAN 2% OF THE ORIGINAL PURCHASE PRICE OF THE VEHICLE. ON AUGUST 5TH, WITH ABOUT 275 MILES ON THE ODOMETER, THE MOTORCYCLE COMPLETELY STALLED WHILE DRIVING WITH A PASSENGER IN TRAFFIC ON AN ARTERIAL ROADWAY. WE MANAGED TO PULL OVER TO THE CURB LANE. THEY TOWED THE VEHICLE TO THEIR SHOP AND AFTER ABOUT AN HOUR OR SO, THEY REPLICATED THE PROBLEM. (INITIALLY, THE MOTORCYCLE SEEMED TO BE OPERATING OK.) ACCORDING TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT, THEIR DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT COULD NOT PINPOINT THE PROBLEM, AND SO THEY WANTED TO CONTACT THE MANUFACTURER ON MONDAY AUG 7TH FOR ADVICE. THE SHIFTER CONTROL ARM AND SHAFT HAS COME OFF MY HARLEY DAVIDSON ROAD KING TWICE WITH ONLY 12,000 MILES. APPARENTLY HARLEY HAS USED A BOLT THAT DOES NOT GO COMPLETELY THRU TO HOLD IT IN PLACE. I HAD TO ASK FOR A LONGER BOLT WHEN I HAD TO PURCHASE THE NEW SHAFT AND SHIFTER ARM. PLEASE NOTE THE RECALL BELOW, MY FXSTD WAS MANUFACTURED IN MAY 2000.
