THIS VEHICLE IS A NEW HARLEY-DAVIDSON 2009 FLHTUCTG TRI-GLIDE TRIKE, THAT WENT IN FOR IT'S FIRST 500 (ACTUAL MILES 533) MILE SERVICE CHECK. AT DEPARTURE OF THE DEALERSHIP AFTER THE SERVICE WAS COMPLIED WITH, AND WITHIN 1 MILE, I HEARD A NOISE FROM UNDERCARRIAGE OF THE TRIKE, AT WHICH I COULD NOT DETERMINE WHAT THE SOUND WAS AT THE TIME. I BACKED UP AND LOOKED FOR ANYTHING THAT MAY HAVE FALLEN OFF

THE NEXT DAY I RODE FOR ANOTHER 10-15 MILES, AND ON MY DASH CAME ON WARNING LIGHTS TO CHECK ENGINE, AND THE BATTERY LIGHT ALSO ILLUMINATED. SO STRAIGHT HOME I GO. AFTER EXAMINING THE UNDERCARRIAGE OF THE TRIKE I NOTICED 1 FORWARD ENGINE MOUNT BOLT (APPROX 5 INCHES LONG) WAS MISSING, AND THE OTHER WAS BEING HELD IN PLACE BY THE VOLTAGE REGULATOR (V/R) WIRING. THIS IS WHAT CAUSED THE DASH LIGHTS TO ILLUMINATE, AS THE V/R PLUG WAS PULLED OUT. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP 3 TIMES SPEAKING TO ERIC HUFF'S (GENERAL MANAGER) ANSWERING SERVICE MACHINE, JAMES ? (SERVICE MANAGER) ANSWERING SERVICE MACHINE, THEN TO EDDIE A SERVICE WRITER. JAMES RETURNED MY CALL, SENT OUT A TOW TRAILER, AND TOOK THE TRIKE IN FOR SERVICE AGAIN. VIA CORRESPONDENCE WITH EDDIE, THE DEALERSHIP WANTED TO KEEP MY TRIKE FOR ANOTHER DAY TO MAKE CONTACT WITH THE MANUFACTURE TO VERIFY NO SAFETY ISSUE EXIST. I INFORMED HIM THAT THESE BOLTS WERE INSTALLED UPSIDEDOWN, AND NO LOCK NUT OR WASHER WAS BEING USED. ONLY A TORQUE. ON TUESDAY, I PICKED UP THE TRIKE AGAIN, AND AFTER LATER INSPECTING THE JOB PERFORMED, I FIND THE BOLTS INSTALLED UPSIDE-DOWN AGAIN, WITH NO LOCK NUT (SHOULD HAVE BE A CASTLE NUT W/ COTTER PIN, COMPRESSION LOCK NUT, OR A TEFLON LOCK NUT). I WAS GOING ABOUT 45 MPH AND CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP. THERE WAS A SPORTS CAR BEHIND ME THAT LOCKED HIS WHEELS UP AND STOPPED ABOUT 4 INCHES FROM HITTING ME. THE BIKE FLEW ABOUT 4-5 FT AND LANDED ON GRASS. I TRIED TO REGAIN CONTROL OF THE BIKE BUT DESPITE MY EFFORTS THE ENGINE REMAINED WIDE OPEN. I PULLED IN THE CLUTCH BUT THE BIKE SWERVED IN THE SLIPPERY GRASS AND WENT DOWN ON IT'S LEFT SIDE. THE BIKE RIGHTED ITSELF AND KEPT GOING BUT FELL IMMEDIATELY AGAIN ON THE RIGHT SIDE. THIS SCENARIO REPEATED ITSELF ONE MORE TIME FALLING ON THE LEFT SIDE ONLY THIS TIME IT FELL MORE VIOLENTLY AND EJECTED ME INTO THE DIRT. AS I WAS LAYING THERE I HEARD MY MOTORCYCLE ROARING AND SAW THAT IT HAD FLIPPED OVER ON IT'S RIGHT SIDE ABOUT 30 FEET AWAY AND WAS LAYING PERFECTLY HORIZONTAL WITH THE REAR WHEEL SPINNING. THE BIKE WAS SLOWLY TWISTING ON THE GRASS FROM THE TORQUE OF THE ENGINE AND I HAD A MOMENT OF FEAR THINKING THAT IF THE WHEELS DUG IN AGAIN THERE'S NO TELLING WHICH DIRECTION IT WOULD GO AND I COULDN'T MOVE. I TRIED TO TWIST MY BODY AROUND TO PUT MY FEET TOWARDS THE BIKE AS MY ONLY DEFENSE BUT COULDN'T DO IT. FORTUNATELY, AFTER ABOUT 3 SECONDS, THE ENGINE QUIT. PEOPLE CAME TO MY AID IMMEDIATELY AND IN 15 MINUTES I WAS IN AN AMBULANCE. I SPENT TWO WEEKS IN THE HOSPITAL WITH 3 BROKEN VERTEBRAE, 1 BROKEN COLLAR BONE, 2 BROKEN SHOULDER BONES AND 6 BROKEN RIBS. THEY REPLACED THE FUEL LINE ASSEMBLY. THEY GAVE THE OLD ASSEMBLY TO ME. THE SERVICE REP STATED THAT SHE HAD ONLY SEEN THIS HAPPEN 1 OTHER TIME IN 5 YRS. I TOLD HER THAT 1 TIME IS TOO MANY AND THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT MUST BE ADDRESSED. THERE HAD BEEN NO PREVIOUS RECALLS OF THIS ISSUE. I TELEPHONE HARLEY DAVIDSON CORPORATE CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY ADVISED THAT THIS PARTICULAR ASSEMBLY HAD BEEN RE-DESIGNED SEVERAL TIMES SINCE 2003. I ASKED WHY THEY HAD NOT ISSUED A RECALL, BUT THE REP COULD NOT PROVIDE AN ANSWER. TODAY I WAS TELLING MY STORY TO A FRIEND, WHO HAS THE EXACT SAME HARLEY AS MINE. HE SAID THAT SOON AFTER HE BOUGHT HIS BIKE IN 2003. HE RECEIVED A RECALL FOR AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM. WHILE THE BIKE WAS IN THE SHOP FOR THE PROBLEM, THE SERVICE TECH TOLD HIM THAT THEY WERE GOING REPLACE THE FUEL LINE ASSEMBLY ALSO. WITHIN THE FIRST 90 DAYS AFTER PURCHASING MY 2006 HARLEY DAVIDSON FXSTSI IN MESA, ARIZONA I STARTED EXPERIENCING REAR BRAKE PROBLEMS. I WENT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP I PURCHASED IT FROM AND ASKED THEM TO CHECK IT AS A PRIVATE SHOP HAD ALREADY LOOKED AT IT FOR ME. I HAD APPROXIMATELY 4500 MILES AT THIS TIME AND WAS IN NEED OF NEW REAR PADS. ALSO MY REAR ROTOR WAS DISPLAYING A BRONZE OR GOLD COLORING
... WHICH I WAS TOLD WAS FROM OVERHEATING WHICH USUALLY OCCURRED DUE TO A WARPED ROTOR. I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALERSHIP THAT IT WAS NOTHING UNUSUAL AND THEY FELT IT WAS DUE TO THE WAY I RODE MY MOTORCYCLE. I WAS ASKED BY THE GM HOW I APPLIED MY BRAKES WHEN STOPPING. I TOLD HIM IT WAS ABOUT 60% FRONT TO 40% REAR (AS OWNERS MANUAL INSTRUCTS). I WAS TOLD ABSOLUTELY NOT, THAT IT SHOULD BE ATLEAST 70%FRONT TO 30% REAR. I THEN INFORMED HIM I HAVE BEEN RIDING HARLEY'S (DIFFERENT MODELS) FOR 15 YEARS, LIFE MEMBER HOG AND NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM. I TOLD HIM THE REAR BRAKE WAS CATCHING CAUSING MY REAR TIRE TO SKID AND SOMETIMES I HAD TO KICK IT DOWN TWO OR 3 TIMES HARD TO GET IT TO RELEASE. THE THROTTLE CONTROL ON THE MOTORCYCLE IS A "THROTTLE BY WIRE" TYPE OF CONTROL AND THE IDLE POSITION DOES NOT REMAIN CONSTANT. ONE TIME THE MOTOR WILL IDLE AT 1050 RPM'S AND THE NEXT TIME IT WILL IDLE AT 1400 RPM'S.
