THE LAST TIME I HAD JUST PASSED A TRUCK ON A TWO LANE ROAD WITH NO SHOULDER. THE TRUCK CAME SO CLOSE IT ALMOST HIT ME. I COULDN'T AFFORD THE KIT SO I HAD THEM REPLACE THE BROKEN DEFECTIVE PART WITH A NEW DEFECTIVE PART + THE OTHER PARTS THAT WERE DESTROYED AS A RESULT OF THE BROKEN DEFECTIVE PART. I HAVE A HARLEY DAVIDSON (HD) PREMIUM OIL COOLER KIT PART NUMBER (P/N) 62868-99 THAT WAS INSTALLED NEW ON MY 2000 FLHR ROAD KING. IN JUNE 2009 THE MOTORCYCLE (BIKE) DEVELOPED AN ENGINE OIL LEAK. CYCLE CITY, THE LOCAL HD DEALERSHIP, WAS CONTACTED AND AN APPOINTMENT SCHEDULED TO HAVE REPAIR KIT P/N 94239 INSTALLED ON JULY 21, 2009 UNDER HD RECALL CODE 0109. BECAUSE I DIDN'T WANT TO RIDE THE BIKE

WITH THE OIL LEAK AND TO DETERMINE THE SOURCE OF THE LEAK, I REPLACED THE TWO ORIGINAL COOLER HOSES AND FOUND THE LONGER HOSE ABRADED WHERE IT RUBBED AGAINST THE ENGINE CRANKCASE BEFORE CONNECTING TO THE COOLER. THE HOSES WERE NOT THE CAUSE OF THE OIL LEAK, BUT HAD THE ORIGINAL HOSE BEEN LEFT ON THE MOTORCYCLE, IT WOULD HAVE EVENTUALLY ABRADED THROUGH CAUSING A PRESSURIZED OIL LEAK. WHEN THE BIKE WAS TAKEN IN FOR THE RECALL REPAIR, I SAW THAT THE REPLACEMENT HOSES IN THE REPAIR KIT WERE TOO SHORT TO REPLACE THE ORIGINAL ONES AND THE WORK WAS NOT PERFORMED. I FOUND OUT THE KIT HAD BEEN UPDATED FROM P/N 62868-99 TO 62868-99B WITH AN OIL FILTER ADAPTER TO RE-ROUTE THE OIL HOSES. I SHOWED THE ORIGINAL HOSE (THAT I STILL HAVE) TO THE SERVICE WRITER AND HE AGREED THAT IT WOULD HAVE EVENTUALLY ABRADED THROUGH. BECAUSE OF THIS FACT, I FEEL THAT IN THE INTEREST OF RIDER SAFETY HD P/N 62868-99 SHOULD ALSO BE INCLUDED IN A HD RECALL, POSSIBLY WITH THE INCLUSION OF THE OIL COOLER ADAPTER, P/N 94239 AND THE ORIGINAL HOSES TO ELIMINATE ROUTING THE HOSES NEXT TO AND AGAINST THE CRANKCASE. THIS DEFECT, IF LEFT UNCHECKED, WOULD CAUSE THE PRESSURIZED LOSS OF ENGINE OIL THAT COULD CAUSE THE LOSS OF TRACTION, POSSIBLY WITHOUT WARNING, AND COULD CAUSE INJURY OR DEATH AND/OR DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE. THE MOTORCYCLE WILL OPERATE NORMALLY AS THE BATTERY CONTINUES TO LOSE POWER. WHEN THE BATTERY FINALLY FALLS BELOW THE THRESHOLD OPERATING VOLTAGE OF THE ELECTRONICS FOR THE MOTORCYCLE THE ENGINE WILL BEGIN TO BACKFIRE AND THE OPERATOR WILL ,OUT OF INSTINCT, PULL THE CLUTCH IN. WHEN THIS HAPPENS THE ENGINE WILL DIE IMMEDIATELY. THIS CAN BE A LIFE THREATENING SITUATION. (ALMOST FOR ME). I RECENTLY SAW A BLOG IN A CHAT ROOM WHERE MOTOR COMPANY HAD ISSUED A TECH BULLETIN WHERE A DOWNLOAD TO THE ECU WOULD RESET THE CALIBRATION TIMING OF THE IDLE PROCEDURE. I ASKED THE DEALER TO UPDATE MY ECU AND THE RESPONSE WAS THAT BECAUSE I HAD MODIFIED MY BIKE IT WOULD COST $150 FOR THE UPDATE. I CALLED CUSTOMER SERVICE NUMBER AND AFTER MANY TRANSFERS WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS NO SUCH BULLETIN OR UPDATE I THEN GAVE THE PHONE TO DEALERS SERVICE MGR WHO GAVE THEM INFO HE HAD AND TOLD HIM TO NOT CHARGE FOR THE UPDATE AS A CUSTOMER SATISFACTION ACTION AND THE DEALER UPDATED AND I HAVE HAD NO PROBLEM SINCE. I THINK SINCE THIS IS A POSSIBLE SAFETY ISSUE THE UPDATE SHOULD BE ANNOUNCED AND PERFORMED UNDER NORMAL WARRANTY. WHILE RIDING THE MOTORCYCLE, THE SEAT GOT DETACHED FROM THE MOTORCYCLE. THE MOTORCYCLE SEAT IS ATTACHED AT TWO POINTS. THERE IS A TAB AT THE REAR OF THE SEAT WHICH ATTACHES TO THE FENDER. THE OTHER ATTACHMENT POINT IS UNDER THE SEAT, WHERE A FRAME MOUNTED TAB SLIDES INTO A HOLE IN THE SEAT. THE ATTACHMENT POINT UNDER THE SEAT IS WHERE THE SEAT DETACHED. THE SEAT PAN FOR THIS MODEL BIKE (FLTRSE3
... ) IS QUITE FLEXIBLE. WHEN A RIDER SITS ON THE SEAT, IT ALLOWS THE SEAT TO FLEX. THE FLEXION OF THE SEAT CAUSES THE SEAT TO PULL AWAY FROM THE FRAME MOUNTED SEAT TANG. I HIT A SHARP BUMP AT ABOUT 60 MPH AND THE SEAT FLEXED ENOUGH TO ALLOW IT TO DETACH FROM THE UNDER SEAT MOUNT POINT. THIS FAILURE HAS THE POTENTIAL TO OCCUR AT ANY TIME WHILE RIDING SEATED ON THE MOTORCYCLE. IT OCCURRED TWICE IN ONE DAY (PERHAPS TWO TO THREE HOURS RIDING). I AM ABLE TO REATTACH THE SEAT. I CONTACTED THE DEALER WHERE I BOUGHT THE SEAT THE DAY THIS OCCURRED. THERE IS NO RESOLUTION AT THIS POINT. I AM FAIRLY CERTAIN HARLEY WILL REPLACE THE SEAT BUT I FEEL THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE ON ALL FLTRSE3 MODELS AND THAT THE SEATS SHOULD BE RECALLED. IT IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND COULD CAUSE A RIDER TO LOSE CONTROL IF THE MOTORCYCLE SEAT DETACHES WHILE RIDING. THIS DEFECT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.
