ON THE ABOVE DATE THIS VEHICLE CAUGHT ON FIRE LESS THAN A MINUTE AFTER STARTING IT. I HAD RODE THIS VEHICLE TO WORK AND WAS AT WORK FOR AROUND TWO HOURS. UPON LEAVING WORK, I STARTED THE MOTORCYCLE WITHOUT GETTING ON AND WAS REACHING TO PUT ITEMS IN THE TRUNK WHEN THE FIRE STARTED. WHEN WALKING UP TO THE VEHICLE I DID NOT SMELL GASOLINE OR NOTICE ANY LEAKING FUEL BEFORE STARTING THE MOTORCYCLE. TH
... E MOTORCYCLE WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES VERY QUICKLY. I WAS VERY CLOSE TO BEING BURNED. SOME CO-WORKERS AND MYSELF ATTEMPTED TO PUT OUT THE FIRE, BUT WERE UNABLE TO GET CLOSE ENOUGH DUE TO THE INTENSE HEAT AND FLAMES. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED FAIRLY QUICKLY TO PUT THE FIRE OUT, BUT THE VEHICLE WAS A TOTAL LOSS. THE FIRE MARSHAL STATED THAT IT WAS PROBABLY DUE TO MECHANICAL FAILURE. I OWN A 2008 VRSCDX HARLEY DAVIDSON - THE REAR BRAKE FAILED AS IT IS EXPOSED TO EXCESSIVE HEAT, DUE TO ITS PROXIMITY TO THE EXHAUST PIPE. THE FAILURE IS CAUSED BY THE PLASTIC PORTION OF THE SWITCH MELTING ALLOWING THE BRAKE FLUID TO LEAK OUT OF THE SYSTEM. I RECENTLY BOUGHT THIS BIKE USED, I BOUGHT IT FROM A NATIONAL MOTORCYCLE COMPANY WHO DEALS IN RENTAL BIKES. I WAS UNAWARE THIS BIKE YEAR (2009) HAD AN ISSUE WITH THE THROTTLE BY WIRE SYSTEM, AS OF TODAY'S DATE I'VE HAVE HAD THREE INSTANCES WHERE THE BIKE HAS WENT INTO BREAK DOWN MODE BECAUSE OF THIS FAULTY SYSTEM. THE PRIOR TWO INCIDENTS WERE DIAGNOSED AND APPARENTLY FIXED BY MY LOCAL BIKE SHOP,
... BUT THE SAME PROBLEM KEEPS OCCURRING. DURING THE FIRST INCIDENT, MYSELF AND PASSENGER WERE TRAVELING ON INTERSTATE 95 IN SOUTH FLORIDA AT NIGHT, THE BIKE WENT INTO BREAK DOWN MODE AS I WAS SWITCHING GEARS AND I WAS ALMOST HIT TWICE BY TRAFFIC TRYING TO MAKE IT SAFELY TO THE SHOULDER WHERE I HAD TO BE TOWED HOME. I WAS OPERATING MY 2008 HARLEY DAVIDSON FLHTCU WHEN I APPLIED MY REAR BREAKS ONLY TO FIND I HAD NO REAR BREAKS. I STILL HAD MY FRONT BREAKS THAT WORKED VERY WELL. I HAVE 9,600 MILES ON THE MOTROCYCLE. I TOOK MY MOTORCYCLE TO THE HARLEY DEALER AND ASKED THE SERVICE WRITER TO CHECK MY REAR BREAKS AS I TOLD HIM THERE WERE NO BREAKS. ... KNEE UNDER THE RUNNING BOARD ON THE RIGHT SIDE, PUSHED DOWN ON THE BREAK AND SAID YOU HAVE A PIN HOLE IN YOUR BREAK LINE CAUSED BY THE CLUTCH CABLE RUBBING ON THE BREAK LINE. I HAD CONCERNED THAT HE KNEW EXACLTY WHERE TO LOOK AND I ASKED IF THIS WAS SOMETHING HE HAD SEEN BEFORE, HE ANSWERED YES I HAVE SEEN IT A FEW TIMES AND AS A MATTER OF FACT HE JUST HAD ANOTHER ONE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM, IT WAS A 2003 AND HE WOULD HAVE TO ORDER THE PART AND ASKED THAT I BRING IT BACK THE FOLLOWING THURSDAY. HAVING BEEN A TRAFFIC ACCIDENT INVESTIGATOR FOR MANY YEARS AS A MOTOR POLICE OFFICER. I SENT AN E-MAIL TO HARLEY CUSTOMER CARE AND GOT A PHONE CALL BACK AND I TOLD THEM OF THE PROBLEM, THE REPRESENATIVE THERE HAD NOT HEARD OF THE PROBLEM BEFORE AND I STATED I THOUGHT THEY HAD A PROBLEM WHEN THE DEALER SERVICE WRITER GOES TO THE EXACT PLACE WHERE THE PIN HOLE WAS. I TOLD HIM I WAS CONCERNED IF THIS HAD HAPPEND AT LEAST THREE TIMES AT THE SAME DEALER IT HAD TO BE MORE OF A PROBLEM AND HE SHOULD CHECK TO SEE HOW MANY BREAKLINES HAD BEEN ORDERED FOR THE SAME MODEL. HIS STATEMENT TO ME WAS THEY RECEIVE INFORMATION FROM DEALERS ALL OVER AND IF IT WAS A PROBLEM THEY WOULD KNOW ABOUT IT. I TOLD HIM NOT IF THEY ARE GETTING VARIED REASONS FOR THE DEALERSHIP AND MY CONCER WAS NO PERSON GET INJURED DUE TO THIS PROBLEM AS IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND MAYBE A SERVICE NOTICE SHOULD BE PUT OUT TO CHECK THESE LINES. WENT UN-RESPONDED TO, UNTIL THE DATE OF THIS REPORT. KENTS HARLEY DAVIDSON CAN PROVIDE PICTURES OF THE DEFECTIVE TIRE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE ON THE TIRE IS AROUND 7000 MILES AND THE TIRE HAS 4/32 TREAD LEFT FROM A NEW 8/32 DEPTH. THIS IS A LIFE THREATENING SITUATION AND DUNLOP IS REFUSING TO RESPOND TO THE DEFECT. IT SHOULD BE FURTHER NOTED DUNLOP IS WILLFULLY , DELIBERATELY IGNORING THEIR WARRANTY ON MOTORCYCLE TIRES AND ARE THEREFORE WILLFULLY DELIBERATELY ENDANGERING CUSTOMERS AND HAVE FULL KNOWLEDGE THEY ARE DOING SO.
