THE PROBLEM BEGAN AROUND APRIL OF 2012. WHEN I STARTED THE MOTORCYCLE, THERE WAS NO THROTTLE RESPONSE. THE MOTORCYCLE WILL IDLE AT 1000 RPM BUT THE THROTTLE WILL NOT WORK WHEN TWISTED TO ACCELERATE ENGINE. IT REMAINS AT IDLE. IT HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES AND I HAVE TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY IN ORDER TO RESET THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE. SOMETIMES IT WORKS, OTHER TIMES IT DOES NOT. IT ALSO HAPPEN

THEY STATED THEY FIXED IT MOTORCYCLE BEGAN TO DO THE SAME THING AFTER APPROXIMATELY 75 MILES, NOW MOTORCYCLE WILL IDLE BUT THERE IN NO THROTTLE RESPONSE AT ALL. WORK ORDER NUMBER:661593, DATE OF SERVICE 7/25/12. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION I SEE THIS AFFECTS MANY 2009 HARLEY DAVIDSON MOTORCYCLES, SPECIFICALLY FLHX MODELS AND AT LEAST ONE FATAL ACCIDENT HAS OCCURRED BECAUSE OF IT. IT HAS BECOME A SAFETY ISSUE FOR ME AND I WANT OTHERS TO BE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. I SEARCHED FURTHER ON THE INTERNET TO FIND A MEMORANDUM ISSUED BY HARLEY DAVIDSON TO SEE THAT THIS DOES EFFECT 2009 HARLEY DAVIDSON WITH THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE, ALSO KNOWN AS THE FLY BY WIRE THROTTLE SYSTEM. THEY STATED THAT IT NORMALLY HAPPENS AROUND 8,000 MILES AND IT IS CAUSED BY CORROSION ON THE PINS OF THE MODULE THAT CONTROLS THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE. HARLEY DAVIDSON'S REMEDY TO THIS PROBLEM IS TO CLEAN OR REPLACE THE PINS IN THE MODULE AND COAT WITH ELECTRO-GREASE. IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN REPEAT PROCESS. WHILE PULLING AWAY FROM A STOP LIGHT, THE SEAT STARTED TO SLIDE OFF THE REAR FENDER. THE BOTTOM OF THE SEAT IS HARD PLASTIC SOME HOW IT CRACKED ALL THE WAY AROUND THE SEAT MOUNTING BRACKET SO THE SEAT WILL NOT STAY IN PLACE WHEN YOU DRIVE. THE SEAT RETENTION NUT AND THE SEAT BRACKET AND THE FENDER ARE ALL DAMAGED. FROM NORMAL USE. I TALK TO THE DEALER THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY SEE THIS ALL THE TIME.

AT AROUND 20,000 MILES I TOOK MY MOTORCYCLE IN TO HAVE THE TIRES CHANGED AND THE REAR WHEEL BEARINGS WERE BAD AND THE DEALERSHIP REPLACE THE REAR WHEEL BEARING. A FEW THOUSAND MILES LATER THE FRONT WHEEL BEARINGS FAILED ON ME IN MONTANA, I AM FROM WASHINGTON STATE, ON THE FREEWAY AND I ALMOST CRASHED, I COULD HAVE DIED RIGHT THERE BUT LUCKILY I WAS NOT IN A TURN AND MANAGED TO GET TO THE SIDE OF
... THE FREEWAY. A DEALERSHIP IN MONTANA TRAILERED MY MOTORCYCLE IN AND REPLACE THE FRONT WHEEL BEARINGS. NOW AT ABOUT 40,000 MILES I TOOK THE MOTORCYCLE IN TO HAVE THE TIRES REPLACED AGAIN AND THE FRONT AND REAR WHEEL BEARING ARE BAD AGAIN AND BEING REPLACED. MY BROTHER IN LAW HAS A 2004 HARLEY ROAD KING, WITH ALMOST 50,000 MILES, AND HAS NOT HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH WHEEL BEARINGS. MY YEAR, NOT SURE WHEN HARLEY CHANGED WHEEL BEARINGS, HAVE DIFFERENT WHEEL BEARINGS THAN HIS MOTORCYCLE. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE, I HAVE READ ON SEVERAL ONLINE FORUMS THAT MANY OTHER PEOPLE ARE HAVING THESE PROBLEMS AND THE MECHANIC AT MY DEALERSHIP HAS TOLD ME THAT MANY PEOPLE HAVE WHEEL BEARING PROBLEMS. MY WIFE WAS RIDING HER MOTORCYCLE TO WORK AND HAD JUST LEFT OUR RESIDENCE. SHE WAS APPROACHING A CURVE IN THE ROAD AND WENT TO APPLY HER BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN BEFORE ENTERING IT. THE REAR BRAKE PEDAL FAILED WITH ABSOLUTELY NO PRESSURE. SHE WAS ABLE TO DOWNSHIFT, SLOW DOWN, AND SAFELY RETURN TO OUR RESIDENCE. UPON INSPECTING THE REAR BRAKE SYSTEM, WE COULD FIND NO OBVIOUS DEFECTS (NO LEAKS, FLUID
... FULL AND PROPER TYPE, PADS GOOD, AND CALIPER FUNCTIONING). INITIALLY WE THOUGHT THE REAR BRAKE PADS MAY BE TOO WORN (ALTHOUGH THERE WAS APPROXIMATELY 0.25" OF MATERIAL LEFT ON BOTH PADS) AND REPLACED THE PADS. AFTER THIS WAS DONE, WE COULD SEE THE CALIPER MOVE, THE PADS CONTACT THE ROTOR, BUT THERE WAS INSIGNIFICANT PRESSURE TO STOP THE REAR WHEEL. WE BEGAN RESEARCHING ONLINE AND DISCOVERED NUMEROUS PEOPLE HAVE REPORTED REAR MASTER CYLINDER FAILURE AFTER HAVING THE REAR TIRE OR BRAKE CALIPERS REMOVED FOR SERVICE (WE HAD REPLACED TIRES ON THE MOTORCYCLE APPROXIMATELY A YEAR BEFORE). ALL SIGNS POINTED TO THE SECONDARY SEAL INSIDE THE MASTER CYLINDER RUPTURING AND FAILING. WE CONTACTED OUR LOCAL HARLEY DAVIDSON DEALER TO INQUIRE ABOUT A POSSIBLE RECALL AND WAS TOLD THERE WASN'T ANY REPORTED ISSUE. WE PURCHASED A REAR MASTER CYLINDER REBUILD KIT AND REPAIRED THE CYLINDER. OUR FINDING WAS EXACTLY AS DESCRIBED AND EXPECTED: THE SECONDARY INTERNAL SEAL WAS RUPTURED. WE BELIEVE THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE THAT H-D IS AWARE OF AND SHOULD BE MADE TO RECTIFY. IF MY WIFE HAD TO MAKE A SUDDEN OR EMERGENT STOP, THE FAILURE COULD HAVE CAUSED HER SERIOUS INJURY AND/OR DEATH. IN ONE INSTANCE, AN OFFICER WAS AT A RED SIGNAL LIGHT. THE CLUTCH CABLE BROKE AND CAUSED HIM TO PROPEL FORWARD. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HARLEY DAVIDSON FLHX EQUIPPED WITH DUNLOP D408F TIRES, SIZE 130/70/R18, DOT DA4Y. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH, HE NOTICED THAT THE FRONT TIRE WAS CRACKING. THE TIRE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER REPLACED THE TIRE, BUT THE FAILURE CONTINUED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND ADVISED TO REPLACE THE TIRE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 3,000.
