WHILE RIDING DOWN THE FREEWAY AT NIGHT WITH A GROUP OF OTHER RIDERS, VEHICLE LOST ALL POWER TO MOTOR. THROTTLE WAS UNRESPONSIVE TO ANY RIDER INPUT. HAD TO PULL BIKE OVER ONTO SHOULDER. ATTEMPTS TO RESTART THE VEHICLE WERE INITIALLY UNSUCCESSFUL, AFTER A FEW ATTEMPTS ENGINE STARTED FINE. SAME BEHAVIOR OCCURRED AGAIN IN APRIL OF THIS YEAR WHILE DRIVING DOWN A FREEWAY IN THE GREATER SAN FRANCISCO

I WAS RIDING MY 2009 HARLEY SPORTSTER IN HOUSTON, TEXAS AT ABOUT 9AM, AND I HEARD A BOOM. I WAS ONLY GOING ABOUT 30 MPH, BUT I BEGAN TO LOOSE CONTROL. I REGAINED CONTROL, AND PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE, WHERE I DISCOVERED OIL ALL OVER MY TIRE, AND THE GROUND AROUND MY BIKE. TRAFFIC HAD TO BRAKE SUDDENLY TO AVOID HITTING ME AS I PULLED OFF INTO A TWO FOOT WIDE SHOULDER. I HAD TO RIDE IN THIS NARROW SHOULDER AREA FOR FIVE MILES TO THE NEXT EXIT AT 10 MPH WITH A PASSENGER WHILE TRAFFIC RUSHED BY AT 65 MPH JUST INCHES AWAY. I GOT OFF THE NEXT EXIT AND SHUT THE BIKE DOWN. THE ENGINE LIGHT AND THROTTLE RESET ON THE NEXT RESTART. I RETURNED TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID IT WAS AN OPEN CIRCUIT CODE AND AS DIRECTED BY A FACTORY TECH TIP REPLACED A PIN IN THE THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR HARNESS AND PACKED IT WITH DIELECTRIC GREASE. THEY CLEARED THE CODE AND SAID IT WAS ALL SET. I'M CURRENTLY RIDING THE BIKE AGAIN. THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM THAT WILL EVENTUALLY LEAD TO SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH AND NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED BY THE MANUFACTURER EITHER BY RECALL OR PRODUCT PROGRAM. THE MOTORCYCLE GOES INTO LIMP HOME MODE AND THROWS SEVERAL CODES WHICH ARE ALL RELATED TO THE THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR. THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME SEVERAL TIMES AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, RPM'S, AND THROTTLE POSITIONS. I SPOKE WITH MULTIPLE MECHANICS AND THEY ADVISED ME TO FIRST CLEAN THE CONNECTOR AT THE THROTTLE BODY. CLEANING THE CONNECTIONS WORKED AND I WAS ABLE TO CLEAR THE CODES. AFTER RIDING ABOUT 1
... 50 MILES THE SAME ISSUE HAPPENED AGAIN AND I ENDED UP STRANDED IN THE MIDDLE OF NO WHERE. THIS TIME I COULD NOT GET THE CODES TO GO AWAY. TALKED TO MORE MECHANICS AND THEY ALL SAID THAT IT WAS MY THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR IN THE INDUCTION MODULE, SO I REPLACED THE INDUCTION MODULE AND IT FIXED THE ISSUE FOR ABOUT A WEEK AND ABOUT 800 MILES. THEN ON MY WAY TO WORK ONE MORNING THE PROBLEM CAME UP AGAIN. CALLED A FRIEND OF MINE THAT IS A HARLEY MECHANIC AND HE STATED THAT THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM AND THERE IS A BULLETIN OUT ABOUT THIS PARTICULAR PROBLEM. APPARENTLY HARLEY USES CONNECTORS AT THE ECM AND THROTTLE BODY THAT ARE COMPLETE JUNK AND AFTER BEING EXPOSED TO HEAT AND VIBRATION THEY FAIL AND HAVE TO BE REPLACED. HARLEY NEEDS TO RECALL THESE PARTS AND FIX THE PROBLEM FOR FREE. MY WIFE AND I WERE RIDING DOWN TO THE KEYS OF FLORIDA FROM NC WHEN JUST BEFORE ENTERING THE FLORIDA STATE LINE A LOUD PANGING NOISE STARTED IN THE MOTOR. I TOOK THE BIKE TO ADAMECS HARLEY DAVIDSON OF JACKSONVILLE FLORIDA TO FIND OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. THEY TELL ME THE LOWER MAIN BEARING HAS EATEN INTO THE CASE OF THE MOTOR. MY DUNLOP FRONT TIRE HAD TO BE REPLACED DUE TO "DRY ROT" ON THE SIDE WALL. IT IS ON A 2012 HARLEY DAVIDSON STREET GLIDE FLHX WITH ONLY 11800 MILES ON IT. MOST ALL OF THE TIME, THEY ARE NOT! I WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THIS LOOKED AT. THEY REPLACED THE FRONT BRAKE CYLINDER. THAT DID NOT WORK TO FIX THE BRAKE LIGHT PROBLEM. I WENT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP TO CHECK SOME OF THE SAME MODEL BIKES IN THE SHOWROOM TO SEE IF THEY DID THE SAME THING. THEY ALL DID! WITH THE BRAKE LEVER PULLED, THE FRONT BRAKES MAKING CONTACT AND THE BIKE NOT BEING ABLE TO MOVE, THE BRAKE LIGHTS WERE NOT ON! THEY DO COME ON AFTER YOU APPLY SIGNIFICANT PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE LEVER, THEREFORE YOU HAVE TO CONCENTRATE ON SQUEEZING THE LEVER HARDER AFTER YOU ARE ALREADY STOPPED TO LET PEOPLE KNOW THAT YOU ARE STOPPED. THE MANAGER OF THE DEALERSHIP VERIFIED THIS AND IS WORKING WITH ME TO GET THIS RESOLVED. THE OUTER EDGE OF THE SPRINGS, OVER TIME, HAD WORN THEIR WAY THROUGH THE CAGE THAT CONTAINS THEM IN PLACE CAUSING A SECTION OF THE CAGE TO SEPARATE. WHEEL BEARING LOCKED UP ON REAR WHEEL. GILLETTE WY HARLEY DAVIDSON SERVICE FOREMAN TOLD ME THAT THE WHEEL BEARINGS USED WERE KNOWN TO FAIL AS EARLY AS 5000 MILES, AND COULD LAST UP TO 50,000 MILES. SERVICE MANAGER EASILY REMOVED SIDE COVER OF BEARING AND I COULD SEE THAT THERE WAS NOT MUCH GREASE INSIDE. HE TOLD ME THAT HE HAS SEEN THESE BEARINGS FULL OF RUST, INDICATING TO ME THAT THESE BEARINGS ARE NOT WATER PROOF. THESE BEARINGS ARE NOT ON A SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE PROGRAM BY H.D. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 HARLEY DAVIDSON ULTRA CLASSIC. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH, THERE WAS A FUEL ODOR PRESENT FROM THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT DISCOVERED THAT THE BOTTOM OF THE FUEL TANK WHERE THE FUEL LINE WAS CONNECTED BECAME FRACTURED IN HALF ALLOWING FUEL TO LEAK. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED.
