I EXPERIENCED A LAG AND LEAP ISSUE. I WAS RIDING MY BIKE WITH ABOUT 83 MILES ON THE TANK OF GAS AND OUT OF NOWHERE IT WOULD PRETEND TO STALL AND THEN TAKE OFF. WOULD CONTINUALLY DO THIS IN THE LOWER GEARS. ADDED A NEW TANK OF GAS AND IT WENT AWAY. GOT TO THE SAME MILEAGE AND HAPPENED ALL OVER AGAIN. HARLEY REPLACED MY FUEL PUMP BUT IT WAS VERY SCARY AND I AM WORRIED IT MAY HAPPEN AGAIN.

THE LOWER THE FUEL LEVEL IS, THE MORE OFTEN AND ABRUPTLY THE STALL AND SURGE IS, AND CAN HAPPEN DURING NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS, ESPECIALLY UP AN INCLINE. THIS IS THE SAME ISSUE AS FOUND IN INVESTIGATION PE15015. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HAVE EXPERIENCED ENGINE STUMBLE (STALL), COMMONLY REFERRED TO AS LAG AND LEAP. THIS OCCURRED WHEN I HAD A LOW FUEL LEVEL IN MY TANK, (TANK WAS FILLED 10 MILES LATER WITH 3.1 GALLONS INTO A 3.5 GALLON TANK). WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOP INTO A RIGHT HAND TURN I EXPERIENCED A NEAR-STALLING OF MY ENGINE. I DID NOT A
... DJUST THROTTLE AND VERY QUICKLY AFTER THAT STALL A SURGE IN ENGINE RPM OCCURRED WITH BRISK ACCELERATION, FOLLOWED BY ANOTHER NEAR-STALLING AND ANOTHER SURGE. A THIRD LESS NOTICEABLE EPISODE OCCURRED AFTER THAT. I DID NOT ADJUST THROTTLE POSITION THROUGHOUT THE EPISODE. THE TIMESPAN OVER WHICH THIS TOOK PLACE WAS PROBABLY 2-3 SECONDS. I AM FAMILIAR WITH THE COMPLAINTS WHICH HAVE BEEN AROUND THIS ISSUE AND SO WAS CONFIDENT THAT I WOULD BE ABLE TO GET THROUGH THE EPISODE WITHOUT LOSING CONTROL OF THE BIKE. SEVERAL MINUTES LATER AND AFTER ANOTHER STOP WITH VERY SLOW ACCELERATION FROM IT, DURING WHICH THE STALL AND SURGE DID NOT OCCUR, I DECIDED TO TEST WHETHER IT WOULD HAPPEN IN 2ND GEAR ON A STRAIGHT TRAJECTORY. AT ABOUT 20 MPH I ACCELERATED IN 2ND GEAR AND AGAIN 3 CYCLES OF STALL AND SURGE OR LAG-AND-LEAP DID OCCUR, WITH THE 2ND ONE BEING MOST NOTICEABLE AND THE THIRD BEING VERY MINIMAL. I WAS HAPPY I WAS ABLE TO MAKE A LEFT TURN ACROSS TWO LANES OF ROAD TO GET INTO THE GAS STATION, WITHOUT IT OCCURRING AGAIN. I DROVE ANOTHER 40 MILES AFTER FILLING MY GAS TANK WITHOUT IT HAPPENING AGAIN. WHEN I TOOK OFF FROM A LIGHT IN TRAFFIC, TAKING OFF IN FIRST GEAR, AFTER I LET THE CLUTCH OUT FULLY, IT HESITATED AS IF IT WERE OUT OF FUEL. I WAS LUNGED FORWARD FROM THE SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER. MY LOW FUEL LIGHT WAS NOT ON, AND MY TRIP METER SINCE MY INITIAL FILL-UP WAS AT 90 MILES. I IMMEDIATELY WENT TO FILL IT UP WITH FUEL. ONCE IT WAS FULL, THE PROBLEM WENT AWAY. HOWEVER, THE WEEK MY TRIP METER HIT 90 MILES AGAIN. THE SAME THING HAPPENED AS BEFORE. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME I HAVE BEEN NEARLY THROWN OFF OF THE BIKE. EACH TIME A TRIP TO THE STATION TO GET ABOUT 2.6 GALLONS OF FUEL FILLS IT UP, AND IT IS FINE FOR ANOTHER 90 MILES. I'M NOT SURE WHY THERE IS A LOW FUEL LIGHT, I COULD NEVER RIDE IT UNTIL THAT COMES ON. AND, I WOULD EXPECT TO BE ABLE TO RANGE MORE THAN 90 MILES WITH 3.5 GALLONS OF FUEL. STARTING WITH A FULL TANK OF GAS MY WIFE DROVE HER BRAND NEW XG750 FOR APPROXIMATELY 100 MILES. WHILE DRIVING MY 2015 HARLEY-DAVIDSON STREET 750 YESTERDAY, AND A COUPLE TIMES IN THE PAST, UPON ACCELERATING I FELT MY MOTORCYCLE QUICKLY LOSE POWER AND SHORTLY AFTER LUNGE FORWARD QUICKLY AND UNEXPECTEDLY. AS I ENTERED AN INTERSECTION IN 1ST GEAR, THE MOTORCYCLE FAILED TO ACCELERATE AND THEN SURGED FORWARD. I HAD JUST GOTTEN MY MOTORCYCLE ENDORSEMENT AND HAD VERY LITTLE RIDING EXPERIENCE. FORTUNATELY, I WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE MOTORCYCLE. ANOTHER INCIDENT HAPPENED SOON AFTER AS I WAS TAKING A RIGHT HAND CURVE. I WAS IN SECOND GEAR AND SLOWED AS I APPROACHED THE RIGHT HAND CURVE. I ATTE
... MPTED TO ACCELERATE THROUGH THE CURVE AND THE MOTORCYCLE LAGGED AND THEN SUDDENLY LEAPED FORWARD, CAUSING ME TO FISHTAIL AND ALMOST RUN OFF OF THE ROAD. FORTUNATELY, I WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL AND PREVENT A CRASH. ON 1/7/2015, THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN TO THE DEALER WITH APPROXIMATELY 120 MILES ON IT FOR AN INSPECTION OF THE PROBLEM. THE DEALER TOLD ME THAT THEY WERE ABLE TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM; HOWEVER, I WAS MERELY LOW ON FUEL. I TOLD THE DEALER THAT THE LOW FUEL LIGHT INDICATOR NEVER ACTIVATED. THEY FILLED THE TANK WITH GAS AND THE PROBLEM DID NOT REOCCUR. THEY WERE ALSO ABLE TO GET THE LOW FUEL LIGHT INDICATOR TO ACTIVATE AT APPROXIMATELY 0.8 OF A GALLON. THEY ALSO PUT THE VEHICLE ON THE DYNO AND WERE NOT ABLE TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM WHEN FUEL WAS PRESENT. THE DEALER TOLD ME TO KEEP A GALLON OF GAS IN THE TANK AT ALL TIMES TO KEEP THE FUEL PUMP WET. ON 4/19/2015, THE VEHICLE EXHIBITED LAG AND LEAP IN FIRST THROUGH FOURTH GEARS AND THE ENGINE DIED MULTIPLE TIMES ON A MAJOR THOROUGHFARE. I WAS UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT I WAS LOW ON FUEL, SO I TRIED TO MAKE A U-TURN AT AN INTERSECTION INTO A GAS STATION. I WAS UNABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE TO SAFELY ENGAGE IN 1ST GEAR WITHOUT SURGING AND/OR DYING, SO I PUSHED THE BIKE TO THE NEARBY FUEL PUMP. I WAS SHOCKED TO SEE THAT I HAD SUFFICIENT FUEL AND ADDED 1.2 GALLONS TO THE 3.5 GALLON TANK. AFTER FUELING, THE VEHICLE WAS SPUTTERING WHILE IDLING.
