MY 2001 HARLEY-DAVIDSON HAD A FRAME FAILURE ON THE SWING ARM (REAR FORK) WHERE THE AXLE BOLT GOES THROUGH THE SWING ARM. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH I FOUND THIS TO BE A VERY COMMON PROBLEM ON THE TOURING MODELS 1997-2001. HARLEY-DAVIDSON DID A RECALL IN 2000 FOR THE SWING ARM, THEY NEVER CHANGED THE DESIGN UNTIL 2002. WE CHANGED THE MASTER CYLINDER & BLED SYSTEM. BRAKE ISSUE PERSIST. HARLEY WANTS BIKE TO DIAGNOSE ISSUE ($120.00). MECHANIC THINKS IT COULD BE THE MAIN ABS MODULE.

NOTICED INCREASING WOBBLE IN TURNS, HANDLE BARS SHAKE AT OCCASION, TOOK TO DEALER, HE TEST RODE AND SAID IT WAS THE FRONT WHEEL BEARINGS WERE SHOT, AND THAT THIS IS A COMMON OCCURRENCE ON 09-12 HARLEYS, HE SAID HARLEY HAS SINCE BEEN USING A DIFFERENT BEARING, AND THAT THE REPLACEMENT WHEEL BEARINGS WERE AN UPGRADED PRODUCT.

AT ABOUT 70 MILES ON A FULL TANK OF GAS, MY XG750, WHEN STOPPING AND GOING IT FELT AS THOUGH IT HAD NO POWER AND THEN SURGED. THIS HAPPENED EVERYTIME I STOPPED AND WOULD GO. THE FUEL LIGHT WOULD FLICKER ON AND OFF BUT WOULD GO OUT ONCE IT STOPPED SURGING. I STOPPED AND FILLED UP THE GAS TANK. ONCE FULL THE SURGING STOPPED. AFTER THAT I WAS AFRAID TO RIDE OVER 50 MILES WITHOUT GETTING MORE GAS.

THE SURGE CAUSED THE BIKE TO JUMP AND I STARTED TO LOSE CONTROL. I GOT THE BIKE STOPPED BUT BECAUSE OF THE ANGLE OF THE BIKE IT FELL ON ITS LEFT SIDE AND I WENT DOWN ON MY KNEE. THE BIKE SUFFERED WHAT APPEARES TO BE MINOR DAMAGE. BENT CLUTCH, SCUFFED HANDLE AND FOOT PEG. THE GEAR SELECTOR ALSO BENT AND NOW WILL ONLY START IN NEUTRAL. THIS IS DEFINATELY A FUEL DELIVERY RELATED PROBLEM BASED ON THE AMOUNT OF GAS IN THE TANK. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A LOT WORSE IF I WAS IN TRAFFIC OR EVEN GOING AT SPEED. I ORIGINALLY THOUGHT THAT A WHEEL WEIGHT FRONT FROM THE FRONT WHEEL CAME OFF CAUSING A TIRE IMBALANCE. AFTER ABOUT 5 MILES THE SHUTTER BECAME MORE VIOLENT AND I PULLED MY MOTORCYCLE OF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. UPON INSPECTION, IT WAS EVIDE

TOWING OF $880.00 WAS COVERED BY MY INSURANCE THROUGH THE HARELY OWNERS GROUP/ROAD AMERICA. WHILE BEARING FAILURES ARE SOMEWHAT COMMON IN AN AUTOMOBILE, THEY CAN BE CATASTROPHIC ON A MOTORYCYCLE SHOULD THE FRONT WHEEL LOCK UP AND SIEZE. MY 2015 FLS HAS JUST UNDER 700 MILES ON IT & THE SPEEDOMETER BROKE YESTERDAY. STUCK ON 60MPH. IT DROPPED BACK DOWN TO 0 AFTER SITTING FOR A HALF HOUR, BUT STUCK AGAIN AS SOON AS I REACHED 45 MPH. IT JUMPED UP TO 100MPH & WAS INACCURATE FOR THE REST OF MY RIDE.
