I PUSH MY HARLEY DAVIDSON FLHX 2009 OUT OF THE GARAGE AND APPLIED THE FRONT BRAKE AND STARTED THE MOTORCYCLE. AFTER THE MOTORCYCLE WAS WARMED UP GOT BACK ON THE MOTORCYCLE AND TRIED TO SQUEEZE THE FRONT BRAKE LEVEL BUT IT WOULD NOT MOVE. THE FRONT BRAKE LEVER WOULD NOT MOVE AND I COULD NOT ENGAGE THE FRONT BRAKE. BEFORE STARTING THE MOTORCYCLE THE FRONT BRAKE WAS FINE BUT AFTER THE MOTORCYCLE WAS

DECEMBER 23, 2016, WHILE RIDING MY HARLEY DAVIDSON FLHTK ULTRA LIMITED MOTORCYCLE AT APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH ON A STRAIGHT SECTION INTERSTATE 295 IN THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, THE RIGHT SADDLEBAG PINS FROM THE RECEPTACLES, ALLOWING THE SADDLEBAG TO DETACH FROM THE MOTORCYCLE. THIS EVENT CAUSED A TRAFFIC HAZARD FOR OTHER MOTORISTS. THE WEATHER WAS CLEAR AND THE ROAD SURFACE WAS DRY AND RELATIVELY EVEN.

THE REPLACEMENT DESIGN OF THE PIN CONNECTORS HAS NOT RESOLVED THE ISSUE THAT COULD LEAD TO UNWANTED DETACHMENT OF THE SADDLEBAGS. THERE ARE OTHER 3RD PARTY DESIGNS ON THE MARKET THAT WILL LAST THE LIFE OF THE ENGINE. THERE IS NO MENTION OF THE NEED TO INSPECT/REPLACE THE CAM CHAIN TENSIONERS EVERY 15,000 MILES IN THE OWNERS MANUAL. I FOUND OUT FROM A FRIEND AND STARTED TO INVESTIGATE THE ISSUE. I SPOKE TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT HARLEY DAVIDSON NOW CONSIDERS IT A WEAR PART. I AM SURE THAT IF IT WAS DISCLOSED WHEN THE MOTOR WAS FIRST RELEASED THAT SALES WOULD HAVE BEEN LESS THAN STELLAR. IF THIS WAS A CAR EXHIBITING A SORT OF PROBLEM THAT COULD CAUSE A FATAL CRASH AND EXPENSIVE REPAIR THAT THERE WOULD BE A RECALL TO FIX THE PROBLEM WITH NO COST TO THE OWNER. THIS BIKE HAS 9000 MILES ON IT AND JUST HAD A REAR TIRE INSTALLED BY HARLEY 2 MONTHS AGO. 7 HOURS FROM HOME I WAS TURNING A CORNER AT A LOW RATE OF SPEED WHEN THE REAR WHEEL BEARING DISINTEGRATED AND DAMAGED THE WHEEL, THE BRAKE ROTOR AND THE CALIPER. I THOUGHT MAYBE THERE WAS AN ISSUE WITH FLUID REACHING THE FRONT CALIPER AND INSPECTED THE BLEEDERS WHICH I OPENED SLIGHTLY WITH NO FLUID BEING ABLE TO REACH THE CALIPERS. AT THIS TIME I DECIDED THAT THIS WAS BEYOND MY ABILITY TO SAFELY REPAIR AND SINCE THE BIKE NEEDED TIRES I TRAILERED THE BIKE TO THE DEALER. WHEN I REACHED THE DEALER I STARTED THE BIKE AND ATTEMPTED TO BACK THE BIKE DOWN AND AT THAT TIME THE REAR BRAKE FAILED COMPLETELY. I INFORMED THE DEALER OF THIS AND THE FRONT BRAKE BEING FROZEN. THE DEALER THEN TOLD ME THAT BOTH MASTER CYLINDERS NEEDED TO BE REBUILT. NO MENTION OF ANY NOTICE FROM HARLEY WAS MENTIONED. THE DEALER HAD NUMEROUS ISSUES GETTING THE PARTS FOR THE MASTER CYLINDERS AND THE BIKE SAT FOR OVER A MONTH. THEY FINALLY RECEIVED THE PARTS AND TOLD ME THE BIKE WOULD BE READY ON THE AFTERNOON OF THAT DAY.
