My truck was part of a GM buyback program where GM Corporation bought the truck back to fix it around Aug 7th 2023 for engine problems. I am reporting this because I do not believe that GM ever reported this to NTSHA. There are also other issues happening at the same time period that should be looked into that may or may not be coincidences. At or before 10,126 miles the truck started having en
... gine lifter and other engine issues. General Motors will not tell me exactly what was done other than lifters according to paperwork supplied. It may have had other issues like a spun bearing but it was never disclosed. Can NTSHA please look into this and information is found, could I please get the records. I asked for the paperwork of what was done while GM owned and troubleshot all the problems. I was told that information is only available to the original owner and I could not have it. It is very frustrating when General Motors Corporate use owner’s personal data as a way to hide what was done and not have to disclose required information. I am asking for service records while General Motors owned it and the service records they did to fix it. I know that there are many more engine problems that are not documented on the vehicle summary. GM will not buy back the truck over a few lifter issues. The truck was later fixed and Art Gamblin Motorsv in Enumclaw Wa, purchased it. I am told it is fixed but have no real paperwork proving this, I was able to purchase an extended warranty just in case. There is also quite a few of battery and electronic issues that do not seem normal with the car as well. The battery was replaced at 10,126 miles at the same time as the engine issues and the battery module was replaced at 29,536 miles. At 29,875 miles and 29,965 some type of communications module and On Star module was replaced. This is the around the same time as the truck was having engine issues and was eventually bought back for what is called “engine noise”.Read more

We purchased the coach fall 2022. First major trip was in summer 2023. The main slide out failed (stopped working halfway out and would not extend or retract) the second night of camping. There was not a local repair facility available. A mobile repair person was able to get the slide out retracted. He informed us there was only one screw holding the main slide out frame in place. We wrapped a rat
... chet strap around the coach to hold the slide out in so we could at least continue our trip. A remote repairman at out next stop reported this is a common occurrence on this coach and it would need to be completely rebuilt. We noted that during transport there was sawdust on the cabinets and floors which we have been informed is evidence of excessive frame flexing. We took the coach back to the dealer from which we purchased the unit. The slide out had to be completely rebuilt (new rails, new slide blocks, new motors). We have little confidence that the slide out will not fail again. We noted that the rear tires were wearing at a rate of more than 4 times faster than the front tires. The excessive wear was accompanied with concern that we would blow a tire on the road and cause an accident and/or injury. A Lippert representative was consulted who advised that the front axle was defective and had to be replaced. Our extended warranty did not cover the cost of the axle. The next major trip was in summer 2024. The main slide out failed again. A repairman noted that the motors and rails needed to be replaced again and that the frame was at the limit of being within specs and may have contributed to the problem. During that repair the repairman noted cracking in the roof seams at the major junction at the front of the camper and around AC units and vents. Each of those areas had been resealed just 5 months earlier. We were informed that this was also evidence of excessive frame flexing. The repair facility diagnostician reported that the roof needed to be scraped and resealed.Read more

1. Complete Trailer brake system failure due to incorrect wire gauge used during assembly at Grand Design. 2. Frame failure at axle shackle weld on Lippert frame due to over-penetration. While towing the trailer there was a message on the tow vehicle information center "trailer Brakes disconnected". All trailer breaking was lost while going down the Siskiyous. At that time the trailer began to
... sway and was difficult to maintain control due to the loss of trailer brakes. During assembly Grand Design used 18-gauge wire to connect the 14-gauge wire from the brake magnets and axle tube to the wire running through the trailer underbelly up to the Vehicle plug. Lippert brake installation manuals for 4 brake systems state to use at least 14-gauge wiring. These manuals are readily available on the Lippert website. The photos we have provided clearly show 18 gauge was used and its insulation had melted exposing the center conductor. Repair documentation from the dealership to fix the brakes indicated that the right rear magnet was intermittently bad drawing high current which would draw all the braking system current to that one assembly. This maximum current to one set of wiring caused the smaller 18-gauge wire to melt off its insulation which resulted in a hard short that prevented all braking at a very inopportune time. Had 14 gauge been used we would not have lost all braking to the trailer. During the brake wire repair at the dealership the frame around the RR axle shackle failed when the trailer was jacked up. It appears that the shackle attachment weld over-penetrated the frame ultimately causing a weak joint and lead to the frame failure. The frame failing around the shackle weld happening at the dealership instead of on the road is beyond lucky and avoided another very unsafe incident on the road. These two items happening at the same time almost resulted in a multi vehicle crash on I-5 southbound.Read more

Complaint Against Grand Design RV – Urgent Safety Concerns In our 2024 Grand Design Solitude 380FL, we have experienced two fires, a brake explosion, severe flooding, and multiple structural failures. These critical safety defects put us and others at serious risk. The attached document details: •Brake explosion and fire on a California highway (August 2024) – A mechanic confirmed we were
... seconds from losing wheels and the axle. •Refrigerator fire (January 2025) – Melted components and destroyed food. •Flooding from failed slide seal – Caused structural damage. •Entry door failure – Preventing safe exit. Multiple dealers and independent mechanics confirmed these defects, yet Grand Design refused repairs. We have filed complaints with the BBB, Missouri Attorney General, and FTC. Cases are open. Please review the attached document for full details. We urge an NHTSA investigation before more owners are put at risk.Read more

The upper deck portion of the 5th wheel frame has been moving independently of the walls which is commonly referred to as "frame flex" or "frame failure", as evidenced by the following: a gap between the wall and floor in the bedroom above the upper deck, pin box receding into the trailer, loose, bent, and missing lag bolts which connect the upper deck to the frame, irregular slide operation in t
... he bedroom above the upper deck, man doors in the trailer being out of square, cargo doors opening during travel, separation of the seam between the filon and "nose", squeaky flooring in the bedroom above the upper deck. The manufacturer has offered to transport the trailer to their manufacturing facility and perform what they are calling a "super" inspection if we agree to sign a release and non-disclosure agreement. The structural components of the trailer are covered by a 5 year warranty which should not require a release and NDA. The trailer is not safe and would be irresponsible to use in its current condition. The "super inspection" repair scope is vague, and the required legal agreement should not be required because the trailer is within the warranty period. The trailer spent almost 10 months at an authorized repair facility. The work done at the repair facility did not resolve or fully and correctly address the frame related issues. The repair facility has in its possession approx 400 pictures of the work performed on our trailer which they will not release to us. The work orders associated with the work done during the 10 months that the trailer was in the repair facility are vague and do not detail what was or was not done.Read more

The passenger-side seatbelt system in my Tesla Model 3 (bought Dec 2020) has been malfunctioning repeatedly. The vehicle displays a "Front passenger safety restraint system fault” warning, even when no one is on the passenger side. This issue has persisted despite multiple repair attempts by Tesla during the warranty period, but they have been unable to resolve it. Safety Concern: A malfunction
... ing seatbelt system is a serious safety hazard, as it could result in the seatbelt failing to function properly in an accident, potentially putting the passenger at greater risk of injury or death. Additionally, the fault warning may prevent proper airbag deployment or create a distraction for the driver while operating the vehicle. Attempts to Fix & Verification: Tesla has attempted multiple repairs but has not been able to fix the issue. According to Tesla, this is a common issue with this model, which raises concerns about a wider systemic defect. The problem is persistent and ongoing, making the vehicle unreliable and unsafe for passengers. Warning & Symptoms: The seatbelt fault warning appears randomly but frequently while driving. Tesla attempted to fix this issue as early as June of 2023, and has remained unresolved despite 4 or more service visits. We might have asked Tesla to work on this issue even earlier and more times since we're unable to pull up repair history before this due to their system error. This issue requires immediate investigation to determine if it is a broader safety defect affecting other Tesla vehicles and if a recall or mandatory repair is necessary.Read more

My fifthwheel was installed with improper lag bolts, causing frame flex issues. I lost my roof going down the highway last year, pass-through storage compartment doors coming open during transit. All but one lag bolt was being held in under tension. The unit could have become detached from the tow vehicle, and the safety braking mechanism likely wouldn't have engaged. If my roof came completely off, or items would have fallen out of the pass-through compartments, this could have easily caused a major accident leading to fatalities on the highway.Read more

This is a 5th wheel trailer by Grand Design ("GD"). We had significant frame movement due to improper construction and broken welds, resulting in: 1) Screws shearing off at the top of the nose cap, causing the roof to bubble and tear during transit. Roof and screws were replaced under warranty. 2) Entry door was misaligned and required adjustment to close properly (likely due to shifting of frame/
... body). Strike plate and lock adjusted. 3) Side door to propane tank compartment popped open during transit on the interstate. 4) Rubber strip covering siding/body screws under nose cap flew off during transit on the interstate. Rubber strip replaced. 5) Screws shearing off near hitch, causing siding under nose cap to sag. We were unable to reattach it ourselves with screws as recommended by GD because the frame no longer aligned properly. Front end taken apart and rebuilt, additional metal added by GD under warranty (refused to provide written details or to update weight). 6) Broken weld under front closets in front of nose cap (front bedroom model). GD initially denied welds were broken. Front end taken apart and rebuilt, additional metal added (refused to provide written details or to update weight) by GD under warranty. 7) Frame movement caused rear frame wall to detach and screws to pop out in interior (causing recliners to detach and move during transit). "Dimples" appeared on exterior lower siding ~4" up from rear on both sides. Unclear on specific damage, because GD will not fully explain in writing. GD added one ~4" piece of metal between the siding and rear wall framing on each side (picture attached) and replaced screws, under warranty. 8) Extreme wear on leaf springs, axels, and tires, caused by excessive movement due to broken/poorly engineered frame, requiring replacement. GD replaced parts, partially under warranty. GD stated the unit was not road worthy, but told us to haul it to them. They refused to send pictures of damage or repair other than the one.Read more

I purchased this vehicle used at a dealer in Virginia. I drove it home to Chelsea Alabama, outside Birmingham. After a couple of days, my front right tire went flat. I took it to the dealer and they said the flat tire was caused by a cracked rim and required both to be replaced. Almost $3,000 for tire and rim. I continued to drive the car, maybe 4,000-5,000 miles and I had another tire go flat. Th
... is was the drivers side rear tire. This was a Pirelli 285/35 R20 run flat tire. Again when I took it to the dealer, this rim was cracked and also needed to be replaced along with the tire. $2,790. The car has 55,000 miles and is meticulously maintained. And I do not drive on rough roads. The dealer consistently states it was due to “hitting a pot hole” which a) is not the case in both these incidents, and b) a rim should not break from running into regular small imperfections in the road. I’ve been in the auto manufacturing business for 38 years and have never, ever had a rim fail, not once but twice in 4 months on the same vehicle. After investigating, this is happening all over. My feeling is the rim has not been sufficiently designed to support the weight of this vehicle. And now, every time I take the car out, I fear for my life and my families life. Frankly, the car is not safe because the rims can and will crack and split under regular driving conditions! This can cause a blowout and possible injury or death. This cost and the cost of my safety should be covered by Mercedes. They should replace these rims with stronger, more properly designed rims to ensure my families future safety!Read more

Resubmitting from 2/3/2025 as the first form was not received. Attn: [XXX] I am the original owner of this unit and there is approximately only 1,500 miles on my trailer. This Grand Design is a swap from the original 2019 Grand Design that I already had. When I am able to camp, when my trailer is not in the shop, we only camp about an hour away from home as I don't feel safe. We have been experi
... encing frame issues. There is excessive pin box movement (this is the OEM), cargo, main doors, as well as the kitchen slide out coming out during transport, separation of roof and nose cap (and other roof issues), axels have been replaced, multiple replacements of suspension components, wrinkling in my walls, saw dust and metals shavings found throughout the unit. l I have been in contact with Grand Design many times, but not much help. I have the feeling they are trying to delay any kind of repairs for their manufacture defects. These have been an ongoing issue since the day I brought this trailer home.
