MY 2016 GRAND DESIGN MOMENTUM 327M USES LIPPERT AXLES. THREE OF THE FOUR GREASE SEALS LEAKED AND WERE FOUND DURING A STATE INSPECTION. THE GREASE CONTAMINATED THE BRAKES. A 2018 STATE INSPECTION AGAIN SHOWED FAILED GREASE SEALS AND CONTAMINATED BRAKES. THE WARRANTY COVERED THE COST ON THE 2016 INSPECTION, BUT NOT THE 2018 INSPECTION. I CONTACTED GRAND DESIGN REGARDING THE ISSUE. I WAS TOLD
... THAT NEW MODELS WERE BUILT USING DEXTER AXLES TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM. AS A REGISTERED PROFESSIONAL MECHANICAL ENGINEER, I AM CONCERNED THAT I HAVE A CAMPER WITH A 16,000+LB GVWR THAT HAS LEAKING SEALS AND POSSIBLY FAILED BRAKES. I REQUESTED NEW AXLES, BUT GRAND DESIGN DID NOT RESPOND. I AM REQUESTING THAT NHTSA ISSUE A RECALL TO REQUIRE THAT THE ISSUE IS FIXED BEFORE IT CAUSES AN ACCIDENT. THE KIT I ORDERED WAS A ROADMASTER SLIPPER SPRING KIT #RM-2570 WITH THE RM-2460 SHOCK ABSORBERS. THIS EQUIPMENT IS FOR AN AXLE THAT IS RATED AT 7,000 LB, WHICH IS WHAT THE AXLES ON MY TRAILER ARE RATED FOR. I INSTALLED THE KIT ON MY TRAILER. AFTER INSTALLING THE SPRINGS I NOTICED A TAG O

USING THE NUMBER FOUND ON THE TAG, E5226, I DID SOME RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET AND DISCOVERED THAT THE SPRING IS RATED FOR 3,000 LBS WHICH IS SUITABLE FOR AN AXLE THAT IS RATED FOR 6,000 LBS. ROADMASTER IS THE MANUFACTURER OF THE SPRING KIT. ETRAILER IS THE RETAILER SELLING THE KIT. MY COMPLAINT IS THAT THE SPRINGS IN THE 7,000 LB KIT ARE ONLY SUITABLE FOR 6,000 LB AXLES. PERSONS USING THE RM-2570 KIT MAY BUY THE KIT AND INSTALL IT THINKING THE EQUIPMENT THEY INSTALLED WAS SAFE. BUT IN FACT, THE SPRINGS ARE UNDERRATED FOR THEIR INTENDED USE AND THIS COULD RESULT IN SPRING FAILURE AND AN ACCIDENT. WHEN I TOWED THE TRAILER, I NOTICED THE TRAILERS BRAKES WOULD NOT STOP THE TRAILER EVEN WHEN I ADJUSTED THE BRAKE CONTROLLER GAIN TO MAXIMUM. IN OTHER WORDS, THE BRAKES WERE ONLY 50% CONNECTED. THE DEALER DETERMINED THAT THE BRAKES WERE WIRED CORRECTLY. I WAS TOWING A 7500 POUND TRAILER WITH IMPROPERLY CONNECTED BRAKES. THIS TRAILER SHOULD HAVE NEVER LEFT THE FACTORY WITH INOPERATIVE BRAKES. THE BRAKES WERE EITHER NEVER CONNECTED OR THE CONNECTORS ARE DEFECTIVE. IN MY VIEW THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. BOUGHT NEW, AFTER 6 MONTHS OF USE THE BRAKES FAILED. THE LIPPERT AXLES ON THE COACH HAD FAILURE ON THE SEALS AND COATED THE BRAKES WITH GREASE. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE ON A 16,000 TRAILER WITH NO BRAKES. LIPPERT KNOWS ABOUT THIS ISSUE BUT HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL ON ALL OF THE TRAILERS WITH THEIR AXLES. RAY DUFFY, OF GRAND DESIGN, ARRANGED TO HAVE THEM INSPECTED IN WEST YELLOWSTONE, MONTANA ON JULY 14, 2017 AT JAKE'S AUTOMOTIVE. HE PRE-SHIPPED REPLACEMENT PARTS IN ANTICIPATION OF BAD SEALS. THE TECHNICIAN AT JAKE'S AUTOMOTIVE FOUND GREASE CONTAMINATION ON THE RIGHT FRONT, RIGHT REAR AND LEFT REAR BRAKES. HE ALSO FOUND THAT THOSE SEALS AND BEARINGS HAD SEPARATED FROM THE HUBS AND REMAINED ON THE SPINDLE WHEN THE HUBS WERE REMOVED. THE RECEIPT STATES, 'HAD TO REPLACE 3 OF FOUR BACKING PLATES AND HARDWARE DUE TO WHEEL SEALS BLOWING OUT.' THE FOURTH WHEEL, THE LEFT FRONT, WAS NOT REMOVED OR INSPECTED BY THE REPAIR FACILITY SINCE THEY DID NOT HAVE REPLACEMENT PARTS AVAILABLE AND THEY WERE CONCERNED THAT REMOVAL OF THE WHEEL COULD DAMAGE THE GREASE SEAL. I REMOVED ALL FOUR HUBS TODAY. THE INTERIORS OF THE TWO LEFT HUBS WERE COMPLETELY COATED WITH GREASE. THE LEFT FRONT WAS WORSE THAN THE LEFT REAR. THE TWO RIGHT HUBS DID NOT HAVE AS MUCH GREASE ON THEM AND WERE EVIDENTLY DOING THE MAJORITY OF THE BRAKING. THE INSIDE OF BOTH HUBS WERE PRETTY SEVERELY SCORED BY THE MAGNETS AND NEED TO BE REPLACED. ALL FOUR GREASE SEALS AND THE INNER BEARINGS STAYED ON THE SPINDLES WHEN THE HUBS WERE REMOVED. TOWED THE UNIT HOME 400 MILES AND DECIDED TO CONTACT LIPPERT, THE MANUFACTURER OF THE AXLES AND BRAKES. I WAS GIVEN A CLAIM NUMBER TO INSPECT THE BRAKES. DUE TO OWNING A TIRE REPAIR SHOP, I WAS ALLOWED TO PERFORM THE INSPECTION MYSELF. WHAT I FOUND WAS NO ISSUE ON THE TWO
... HUBS AND BRAKES ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE UNIT, BRAKES CONTAMINATED WITH GREASE ON THE TWO RIGHT HAND HUBS. GREASE WAS ON THE MAGNETS, INSIDE OF THE DRUM BRAKING SURFACES AND MAGNET SURFACE. LIPPERT AGREED TO SEND ME 2 NEW BACKING PLATES WITH BRAKES, AND TWO NEW GREASE SEALS, PLUS PAY TWO HOURS OF LABOR. I PURCHASED A NEW GRAND DESIGN MOMENTUM 350M AT HOLIDAY WORLD KATY, TEXAS. AFTER TAKING DELIVERY OF THE CAMPING TRAILER & CHECKING HOOK-UP TO TRUCK, LIGHTS & BRAKES IN THE PARKING LOT, I TOWED THE 350M ABOUT 50 MILES ACROSS HOUSTON. ... AYBE THE BRAKES NEEDED MORE 'BREAK-IN TIME' SO A COUPLE OF DAYS LATER I SLOWLY TOWED THE CAMPING TRAILER 400 MILES TO MY HOME IN S. TEXAS. I BECAME VERY CONCERNED WITH THE BRAKING QUALITY OF THE 350M AND CONSIDERED IT A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. ONCE HOME, I WOULD NOT TOW THE UNIT ANY FURTHER WITHOUT MAKING SERIOUS IMPROVEMENT TO THE TRAILERS BRAKING CAPABILITY. AFTER JOINING GRAND DESIGN OWNER FORUMS WE REALIZED THAT MANY OTHER OWNERS ALSO HAD BRAKING ISSUES. I HAD A CERTIFIED MECHANIC PULL WHEELS & HUBS. LIKE MANY OTHER OWNERS, ALL 4 ELECTRIC/MAGNETIC BRAKES (DRUMS, MAGNETS, SHOES & ALL INSIDE THE DRUMS) WERE COATED WITH A HEAVY FILM OF GREASE. UNDERSTANDABLE WHY THE 350M & LIPPERT'S SELF ADJUSTING, ELECTRIC, MAGNETIC BRAKE SYSTEM WAS EXHIBITING VERY POOR QUALITY, UNSAFE BRAKING CAPABILITY. LIPPERT (LCI) SEMI-ADDRESSED THIS ISSUE IN JANUARY 2017 BUT WOULD NOT ADMIT ANY FAULT ON THEIR BEHALF. THERE IS OBVIOUSLY A PROBLEM WITH THEIR BRAKE SYSTEM THAT NEEDS ATTENTION FROM THE NHTSA BEFORE THERE IS A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. ATTACHED IS A PICTURE SHOWING SOME OF THE GREASE CONTAMINATION UPON REMOVING THE WHEEL HUB FROM THE AXLE. THESE BRAKES DEPEND ON THE MAGNETIC FORCE AGAINST THE ROTATING HUB TO 'APPLY BRAKE SHOE PRESSURE TO THE DRUM'. UNDERSTANDABLE WHY THE BRAKES DO NOT WORK EFFECTIVELY WITH A GREASE FILM ON THE MAGNET, ALL INSIDE THE DRUM AREA & ALSO ON BRAKE SHOES. WHILE DOING A ROUTINE INSPECTION WHILE TRAVELING FOUND I HAD LEAKING WHEEL SEALS WHICH ARE KNOWN BY MANUFACTURER TO LEAK. IMMEDIATELY TOOK TO REPAIR SHOP DURING TRAVEL FEARING GREASE WOULD GET ON MY BRAKES AS MANY OTHERS HAVE REPORTED. LIPPERT BREAK COMPONENTS. THE GREASE SEALS FAILED ON THE DRUM BREAKS ON MY DOUBLE AXLE TRAILER. THE TRAILER WAS MANUFACTURED 4/2015 AND I NOTICED THE FAILURE BY 7/2017. ALL FOUR BREAK ASSEMBLIES HAD GREASE ON THE DRUM, PADS AND OTHER PARTS. ENTIRE ASSEMBLY HAS BEEN REPLACED AT ALL FOUR WHEELS.

UPON REVIEWING THE GRAND DESIGN OWNER'S FORUM, NUMEROUS PEOPLE REPORTED THEIR BRAKES BEING COVERED IN GREASE FROM THE LEAKING SEALS. 75% OF OWNERS POLLED IN THE FORUM REPORTED THEIR BRAKES ARE FAULTY. OUR GRAND DESIGN SOLITUDE 310GK WAS MANUFACTURED IN SEP 2016. THE LCI/LIPPERT AXLES LEAKED GREASE OUT THE BACKSIDE PAST THE LIP SEAL AND GOT ALL OVER THE BRAKES AND MAGNET. NOTHING WRONG WITH THE LIP SEAL. SUSPECTED CAUSE IS OVERFILLING WITH GREASE DURING MANUFACTURING.
