We used the gas water heater on our Rig. Come to find out, it blew the cover off the water heater, burned the wires and melted the case. We are very lucky our rig did not catch fire.

While towing my rv, the weld that secures the rear axle springs broke. This weld was located on the right rear side of the frame and it snapped completely off the Lippert frame. It allowed the rear axle to move forward and the two tires on the right side contacted each other and the tires started to disintegrate. ... the steel belts were visible. These tires were high grade tires with less than 5000 miles on them. I stopped for fuel and noticed the damage. If I had continued the tires would surely have had a catastrophic failure shortly. This would have certainly resulted in a loss of control and a probable crash at highway speed. Since the tires were rubbing it is also likely a fire could have resulted. I was unable to have the vehicle moved to a repair location and no mobile rv techs would respond since I was in a remote location. I had to hire a local welder to reattach the weld and reinforce the frame on both sides. In speaking with my insurance company it was determined that this is not an unusual problem with welds breaking. The vehicle was not inspected by police as no other individuals or property was involved. Photos of the damage and broken weld were sent to Grand Design and Lippert, the manufacturer of the frame. Photos taken of the repairs performed by the welder were also sent to them. In addition to repairing the broken weld, I had the welder reinforce the left side of the frame holding the axle springs in place so that it would not fail. The unit is now much safer than it was before the repair. There were no warning lights or symptoms for this problem. I stopped purely by chance for fuel and noticed the steel belts protruding through my tires and this is the only thing that stopped a catastrophic failure and probable crash. Improper routing of 110v wiring on RV Gas/Electric Refrigerator circuit wiring leads to wire contacting the refrigerator "chimney" (boiler flue) which over time burns through the wire insulation cover and results in "live wire" to metal contact and can lead to FIRE! ... on Facebook, stating Grand Design, a Fire Inspector for the Insurance Company and an agent for Norcold Refrigerator determined the cause of the fire as improperly routed wiring. Grand Design has not alerted owners of this potential critical safety issue with a Safety Bulletin, VIN Recall or any other means to alert owners of the hazard. After reading it, we inspected our unit and found the same issue. Grand Design failed to authorize an Emergency Inspection and Repair for 3 business days (4.5days total) despite me notifying them of the fire in another unit. I also informed them that on Grand Design Owners Technical Forum, several other owners are finding the same issue. We hired (at our expense) a Mobile RV Service Technician to inspect and repair our wiring. He found the wire in question to be completely burnt through to the individual wires. It was a matter of time before we would have a fire as well. He made the necessary repairs on 15 June 2021 and we filed a Warranty Claim with Grand Design. We had no circuit breakers trip or any other indication that there was an electrical wiring issue. The refrigerator worked normally and was drawing the correct amperage and all outlets worked normally. Grand Design's poor routing and installation of the wires is creating a significant safety hazard and their failure to notify customers in any way of the potential hazard is very disturbing. Coupled with their lack of urgency in addressing the issue when I called in can possibly lead to unsuspecting owners having fires that could lead to serious injury and death.Read more

Brake linings which are available for inspection. Axles are cracking. Yes available for inspection. Husband was checking under camper since we were going to get new tires and the dealer wanted to know what suspension we have. We have taken two trips with trailer and (Tow vehicle - 2021 Ram 2500). First trip in April 2021 of about 150 miles round trip no problems were encountered. Second trip in May 2021 with a round trip of 380 miles we had repeated instances of "Check Trailer Brake Wiring" and "trailer disconnected" appear on dash. ... tance (and the warning was off) I pulled off the road and checked connection and trailer brakes by engaging the emergency trailer brake switch and trying to pull away. It appeared that the trailer brakes held. This cycle continued for trip to and from RV park. This month, I made an appointment at the RV Dealer, hooked up the trailer, checked operation of turn signals and brake lights and checked that the trailer brakes would engage. They did. When pulling out of storage lot, the warnings appeared, I tried to engage the trailer brake emergency brake while the warning was still on the dash and found No trailer brakes. I proceeded to drive to the RV dealer and the warning disappeared and brakes seemed to function. While I believe the truck brakes will stop the trailer at slow speeds, I am worried about the situation at highway speeds. Trailer is at the dealer waiting in a repair queue. I had telephoned the Grand Design RV customer service line and was told they weren't aware of a problem. However, a friend with the same year and model trailer but a different tow vehicle has encountered the same brake warning issue.Read more

We have scheduled a service appointment to have this issue investigated, but the service department at General RV in Huntley, IL has pushed out our appointment several weeks as they are quite busy. The kitchen side slide out hydraulic cylinder burst/ruptured while under pressure due to the incorrect length bolt being used in the slide out rotating cross shaft. The bolt wore a hole in the cylinder over a 3 year period, and the cylinder shot hydraulic fluid all over the under belly of the trailer. Hydraulic fluid sprayed several 120-volt and 12-volt electrical connections and wires, and also l
... eaked out of the side of the chloroplast. The fluid would have leaked onto the wheels and brakes if it had been in motion when the cylinder failed. Also, the entire hydraulic system is combined, so this caused a total loss of pressure in the front landing gear/jacks and leveling system. So many possible safety issues with this. Grand Design acknowledged the issue and reimbursed me for the parts, but I feel obligated to report this. It actually happened when the new owner (I just sold it) came to pick up the trailer. OUR PASSENGER SIDE REAR TRAILER TIRE BLEW OUT ON OUR 2020 IMAGINE 2800BH. THIS WAS A LIONSHEAD WESTLAKE THAT CAME ON THE TRAILER AND HAD ABOUT 4K MILES ON IT. PRESSURE WAS 80 PSI WHEN WE LEFT OUR SITE AND 88 PSI WHEN IT BLEW ACCORDING TO THE TPMS SYSTEM. OUR SPEED AT THE TIME OF THE FAILURE WAS 60MPH. I WAS ABLE TO FIND A TRUCK/TRAILER SHOP OPEN IN BATESVILLE, MISSISSIPPI. I DROVE THERE FOR EMERGENCY REPAIRS. THEY JUDGED THE FAILURE WAS DUE TO POOR WELDS. I'VE DONE SOME WELDING AND IT WAS EASY TO RECOGNIZE POOR PENETRATION. THE TRUCK SHOP WELDED THE HANGERS AND PULLED THE REAR AXLE AS CLOSE TO PROPER ALIGNMENT AS POSSIBLE. HOWEVER THE AXLE HAD SHIFTED SLIGHTLY IN THE U-BOLTS. THE U-BOLTS NEEDED TO BE CUT OFF, THE AXLE PROPERLY ALIGNED AND NEW U-BOLTS INSTALLED. THEY DID NOT STOCK THE BOLTS BUT THE TRAILER WAS SAFE TO TOW HOME. UPON RETURNING FROM THAT TRIP, I PUT THE TRAILER IN MY WAREHOUSE AND INSPECTED THE FRAME AND AXLES. I NOTICED IMMEDIATELY THE FRAME AT THE RIGHT REAR CORNER DIRECTLY BEHIND THE FAILED REAR AXLE SPRING HANGER HAD SEPARATED. THE EXTERIOR SHEET METAL IS WARPED AND THERE IS A VISIBLE GAP. THE FACTORY HAS REFUSED TO COVER THE AXLE REALIGNMENT OR RIGHT REAR FRAME SEPARATION UNDER THEIR 3-YEAR STRUCTURAL WARRANTY. HE INFORMED ME THAT THEY DO NOT WIRE THEIR RV'S IN SUCH A WAY AND STATED THAT, I MUST HAVE BEEN HIT BY LIGHTNING THAT CAUSED THE ISSUE. BISH'S RV TRIED TO GET GRAND DESIGN TO APPROVE THE ELECTRICAL WORK AS WARRANTY. GRAND DESIGN REFUSED TWICE (ON THE SAME DATE OF 05/02/2019). GRAND DESIGN STATED THAT THE HEATER AND FRIDGE DO NOT DRAW MORE THAN 15 AMPS WHILE RUNNING SIMULTANEOUSLY. I BELIEVE THEY ARE FORGETTING THE PEAK AMPERAGE AT START UP THAT IS CAUSING THIS ISSUE. I BELIEVE THIS ISSUE HAS POTENTIAL TO CAUSE SEVERE INJURY AND EVEN DEATH, UNLESS IT IS PROPERLY RESOLVED. IT HAS ALREADY CAUSED A PREMATURE FAILURE OF THE FRIDGE CONTROL BOARD. THE BRAKE ASSEMBLIES MANUFACTURED BY LIPPERT COMPONENTS INC ON THIS RV AND MANY OTHER RV'S HAVE AN ISSUE KNOWN BY THE MAUFACTURER RELATED TO AXLE GREASE LEAKING PAST THE INNER LIP SEAL. THE EXCESS LEAKING GREASE CONTAMINATES THE BRAKE PAD AND DRUM CONTACT SURFACES RESULTING IN SEVERLY DIMINISHED BRAKING ABILITY, WHICH COULD LEAD TO AN ACCIDENT IN EMERGENCY STOPPING SITUATIONS.

UNIT GVWR OF 9995 LB MINUS HITCH WEIGHT OF 1536 LB PUTS 8459 LB ON THE AXLES. TWO 4400 LB AXLES MEANS 8800 LB TOTAL AXLE STRENGTH MINUS 8459 LB TRAILER WEIGHT MEANS AXLES SHOULD BE SUFFICIENT. SUSPECTED DIMINISHED BRAKING ACTION WHILE TOWING MY 2016 GRAND DESIGN 313 RLTS 37 FOOT RV. WE TOWED FROM THE NORTHEAST TO THE SOUTHWEST THIS LAST SEPTEMBER. ONCE ARRIVING AT OUR DESTINATION AND PLACING THE RV IN STORAGE I BEGAN RESEARCHING THE BRAKE SET UP. THE MANUFACTURER OF THE AXLES LIPPERT COMPONENTS, INC HAD PUT OUT A NOTICE THAT AFFECTED MY RV. THE NOTICE DESCRIBED AN ANOMALY DURING THE ASS
... EMBLY PROCESS WHERE TOO MUCH WHEEL BEARING GREASE WAS INTRODUCED TO THE HUB ASSEMBLY. THIS CAUSED THE SEALS TO FAIL ALLOWING THE GREASE TO CONTAMINATE THE CRITICAL BRAKE COMPONENTS. MORE SPECIFICALLY THE BRAKE LININGS, ACTIVATION MAGNETS AND THE CORRESPONDING SURFACES OF THE BRAKE DRUM THE COME IN CONTACT WITH. THIS DIMINISHES THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE BRAKING ACTION SEVERELY. UNDER THE RIGHT CIRCUMSTANCES COULD PROVE DISASTROUS. EVEN FATAL TO NOT ONLY THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER OF THE TOW VEHICLE BUT ANY OTHER PEOPLE TRAVELING ON THE SAME HIGHWAY WITH THE RV IN CLOSE PROXIMITY. LIPPERT ACKNOWLEDGED THE PROBLEM WITH ME AND SENT REPLACEMENT BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLIES AND SEALS FOR ALL (4) WHEELS. NOT INCLUDING THE BRAKE DRUM, OR BEARING ASSEMBLIES. OR LABOR TO INSTALL THE NEW COMPONENTS. THE WHEEL ASSEMBLIES HAVE NEVER BEEN REMOVED FROM THE RV SINCE NEW. UNTIL THE INSTALLATION OF THE NEW COMPONENTS BEGAN I HAD NEVER SEEN THE EXTENT OF EXCESS GREASE CONTAMINATION I WAS TRAVELING DOWN THE HIGHWAY WITH. PLEASE REFER TO THE ATTACHED PHOTOS. MY 2016 GRAND DESIGN MOMENTUM 327M USES LIPPERT AXLES. THREE OF THE FOUR GREASE SEALS LEAKED AND WERE FOUND DURING A STATE INSPECTION. THE GREASE CONTAMINATED THE BRAKES. A 2018 STATE INSPECTION AGAIN SHOWED FAILED GREASE SEALS AND CONTAMINATED BRAKES. THE WARRANTY COVERED THE COST ON THE 2016 INSPECTION, BUT NOT THE 2018 INSPECTION. I CONTACTED GRAND DESIGN REGARDING THE ISSUE. I WAS TOLD

AS A REGISTERED PROFESSIONAL MECHANICAL ENGINEER, I AM CONCERNED THAT I HAVE A CAMPER WITH A 16,000+LB GVWR THAT HAS LEAKING SEALS AND POSSIBLY FAILED BRAKES. I REQUESTED NEW AXLES, BUT GRAND DESIGN DID NOT RESPOND. I AM REQUESTING THAT NHTSA ISSUE A RECALL TO REQUIRE THAT THE ISSUE IS FIXED BEFORE IT CAUSES AN ACCIDENT.
