Incident date: Jul 26, 2022
Bolts holding brake caliper assembly to the axle apparently loosen and fell out while on the highway. This caused the caliper to drop, resting on inner part of the tire rim, leaving approximately half to one quarter of the caliper on the disc. Caliper caused significant gouging on the rim. During braking, the caliper was prevented from spinning during brake application due to it hitting the axle u
... -bolt retention plate on top of the leaf spring. In the very limited backing, the hydraulic line held back the caliper. Safety issues are the complete lose of the hydraulic system, causing the complete lose of trailer brakes. The caliper gouging the tire rim could have caused the rim to break, with the result of the tire departing the trailer on the highway and hitting another vehicle. Issue was found when I noticed metal flakes (tire rim) in my driveway where I backed my trailer to park it. Following the flakes, I discovered the issue. Grand Design, and axle/brake manufacturer Dexter notified via email. No response as of yet. Hydraulic brakes were factory installed at the time of manufacture.Read more

On 6/17/2022 the cold pressures were set correctly for the 2021 Grand Design 2800BH travel trailer as they had been for a dozen or more prior trips. A TPMS was being used during travel to monitor pressures and temperatures. All 4 of the Westlake brand ST 225 / 75 R 15 tires with manufacturing date "3320" were inspected for bubbles, cuts, punctures, etc... prior to departure and no anomalies were
... observed. With absolutely NO WARNING the right rear wheel experienced a complete tread separation. The tire's entire tread was thrown from the tire in one piece, after making contact with the vehicle, while traveling at 68mph on the FL turnpike southbound. The remainder of the tire remained inflated however the steel belt was now in contact with the highway. The debris caused a multicar accident and delays on the highway according to the Road Ranger who assisted with installation of the spare. The camper itself has consequential damage in excess of $6000 that neither the tire warranty nor travel trailer warranty will cover for this manufacturing defect. The safety of myself, my family riding along, and those around me while traveling on the highway was put in severe risk of injury or death. The defective tire that was removed from the wheel has been retained.Read more

On Monday May 30th, 2022my husband Mike was sitting in the recliner and heard a couple of “pops” and then he heard another louder “pop.” He got up and walked over to the glass sliding door and saw our 2020 Grand Design Solitude 310G camper was on fire. He turned to me and hollered for me to call 911 and that the camper was on fire. He immediately ran outside and ran into the garage/work
... shop and took the garden hose that was attached to the hydrant and began spraying the garage/workshop roof from the south as the flames were not only engulfing the camper but the wind was blowing some flames toward the garage/workshop. I placed the call on my cellphone to 911 at 12:28 pm. After I placed the call I immediately went outside. I started to take some pictures at 12:38 pm. Our neighbor across the road saw the black smoke and immediately came over. Mike had him take over the garden hose he had been using and asked him to continue spraying the garage/workshop. Mike then ran outside and grabbed the garden hose attached to the outside hydrant and went along the back of the garage/workshop and around the north side of the garage/workshop and started spraying the garage/workshop roof from the north. The Albany Fire Chief arrived by private vehicle and assessed the situation and then radioed his crew information on what he wanted them to do when they arrived. When they arrived the Fire Chief immediately took one of the hoses and started spraying the garage while the others concentrated on the camper fire. The camper and inside contents were totally destroyed by fire. We believe the fire started near where the refrigerator was located. There is currently a recall 22V-038 from Grand Design regarding risk of fire due to a wiring issue behind the refrigerator that we were not notified of. My husband Mike suffered 1st & 2nd degree burns on his face and legs which were treated medically at home (I am a Nurse Practitioner).Read more

LED indicator lights on the kitchen range knobs over heated and caught on fire. I was filling the pantry in preperation for an upcoming trip. Within a minute or two a second LED ring on a different knob smoldered and popped. I immediately disconnected all power and than contacted the manufacturers customer service department when they opened the following day. They are supposed to be sending a replacement range to a local service shop for replacement. We are still waiting for the new range to arrive. One of the passenger side leaf springs on our Dexter axle snapped near the shackle point. Since we have read that this is a common issue, we are reporting as this could have potentially resulted in a serious safety issue. When our leaf spring snapped, it severed the propane line that runs underneath our 5th wheel in two places. It also caused the two tires to rub together. Fortunately, for us,
... this must have happened within a short distance from the RV park we were staying at for the evening because we only lost about 1/3 tank of propane and the tires do not appear to have sustained significant damage. We were able to disconnect and drive to a nearby trailer supply store and get a new leaf spring. We also removed and took the damaged propane supply line to a nearby propane provider/retail store and have it repaired. My husband replaced the leaf spring and reinstalled the propane line making sure to test for leaks. We did not keep the broken leaf spring as it didn't even occur to us to keep it for inspection but we are able to show where it snapped, if needed. It almost appeared to be rusted from the inside. Since we don't live/store our RV in humidity prone areas, this seemed unusual. This incident occurred while we were on a trip to visit family in Florida. We do not/nor have not lived in our RV full-time. Our use is infrequent. There was no indication that there was any issue while we were driving. It was only when we exited our truck that we smelled a very strong propane smell that my husband investigated the source and discovered the damage. We had been traveling on I-20 near W. Monroe, LA when we discovered the issue. It is frightening to think about what could have happened had we had a blowout from the tires rubbing together, along with the propane leak while driving down the interstate at 65mph. Please note: we are extremely trailer weight conscience and are very careful to not overload.Read more

225/75R15 tire Load Range E tire experienced complete tread separation and I have retained the majority of the tire remaining for further inspection. The tire information tag afixed to the camper specified 80 psi max cold pressure. After sitting overnight prior to morning departure all 4 tires were checked and set to 78 psi cold pressure and inspected visually on inner, outer and tread surfaces.
... 19.3 miles after departure on FL I-75 traveling at speed control 64 mph at about 11:30 am a tire pop was heard, the tread separated and lodged between the hub and spring, debris was seen flying to the rear in the side mirrors. Traffic was heavy in front and back, no road debris was seen, other cars in front followed straight paths and the outside temperature was 84 degrees. We maintained a steady slow down to the side of the road and could not tell what the following cars experienced due to flying camper and tire parts but we did not collect full pieces of damaged camper parts or the entire tread. No police report was made. Lionshead, the company contracting with the RV manufacturers to supply tires and manage warranty claims, after reviewing pictures and the incident, has issues a $105 tire replacement reimbursement. While parked in an RV park I discovered that the right rear spring hanger on my fifth wheel RV had fractured and separated immediately adjacent to a weld line. I am unaware of any incident that can explain this damage, although I did hear a clunk while auto leveling the vehicle at our campsite. (Auto leveling is computer controlled and is a routine operation.) Inspection of the intact left rear
... spring hanger reveals what appears to be a small crack that may be the beginning of a similar problem on that side. An undetected failed spring hanger when traveling at highway speeds can obviously be a cause of severe property damage and death. Research of this problem in user groups and forums revealed that it is well known to vehicle owners. Anecdotes of broken hangers abound, as do user-invented fixes. Interestingly, Lippert (aka LCI, who is the manufacturer of the vehicle frame) reportedly has a repair for the problem that it has retrofitted to some vehicles and is apparently using in some newly manufactured vehicle frames. The fix is to add a 'V-brace' that is welded to the spring hangers and increases their strength. Example: https://gdrvowners.com/forum/operation/suspension-amp-brakes/52915-spring-hanger-advice There are no recalls for my trailer suspension that I can find, so despite apparent knowledge of the issue the manufacturers of both the frame and the vehicle have failed to warn me or others of it. I am now working with both Grand Design and Lippert to solve this problem on my vehicle. They were inflated to 110 lbs. as directed by the sidewall. My concern is with the possible defective design of the axles, which may have contributed to the tire failure. Overheated bearings, poor load distribution, unknown at this time.Read more

Crossmember connecting the rear of the Hitch A-frame is starting to buckle inward. From the research done, this is the first step in the complete failure of the A-frame. We just recently purchased the 2021 RV from a private seller and noticed the slight bend in crossmember but didnt think anything of it. After a 1500 mile trip the bend is much more pronounced. This is when I started to researc

We were driving and went through a dip in the road and the whole front end of the A- Frame bent/buckled. We have not had any problems with this in the past, but it is a brand new trailer and we are learning it has happened to a few others all Grand Design XLS series. We wonder if the steel used is not of top quality and is too thin.
