While driving on the highway, the steering became much more stiff, and then I heard metallic clanging sounds for a few seconds. The dashboard said press start to start Vehicle. I pressed start while going 30 miles an hour and all lights and instrument clusters went black. I pulled into the grass median where the truck would not start or shift gears. Truck was towed to a GMC dealership

I am submitting this complaint regarding a serious and dangerous brake failure involving my 2020 GMC Terrain SLT with approximately 150,000 miles. While driving, the vehicle suddenly experienced a vacuum pump failure that caused a severe loss of braking ability with no warning beforehand. The brake pedal became extremely hard, and the vehicle would barely stop. This created a very dangerous situa
... tion and could have easily resulted in a serious accident. Thankfully, I was not driving at a high speed when the failure occurred, and there were no vehicles directly in front of me at the time. However, only minutes earlier I had been traveling approximately 65–70 mph on the highway. If this brake failure had occurred while driving at highway speeds or in heavy traffic, I truly believe it could have caused a major crash resulting in serious injury or death. What concerns me most is that there was no warning before the brakes failed. No warning lights and no issues with my brakes. The sudden loss of braking power was extremely frightening and created an immediate safety hazard. After researching this issue, I discovered that other GMC and GM vehicle owners have reported similar vacuum pump failures and brake assist problems. I believe this is a significant safety issue that should be investigated further. Drivers should not experience sudden brake failure without warning, especially on a vehicle that otherwise appeared to be operating normally beforehand. I am very thankful no one was injured in my situation, but I am concerned that another driver may not be as fortunate. My vehicle had to be towed to a nearby shop and they suspected it was the vacuum pump failure and the car started smoking badly. so I had it towed to the GMC dealership and they called me today to confirm that was the problem and it also caused damage to the camshaft. This is a known issue with the terrain and there is currently a class action lawsuit.Read more

The truck has a studder that comes from the transmission when at highway speeds. the studder can be felt at random intervals (seconds) from all passengers. The studder is also present on starting up a slope or accelerating from a stop at a slow pace. when accelerating slowly the jerk is more prominent. We have taken it to the GM Dealership, they confirmed the issue was present. The dealership
... said the GM guidence was to 1st try a re-program and then replace the torque converter. The program flash was unsuccessful, then we paid $4000 to change the torque converter. The Tech stated that this was the GM suggested fix, but noted that we are changing the fluid also which could mask the issue if it is the valve body causing an issue. The replacement torque converter and fluid did somewhat reduce the issue for a short period of about 2 months before it has returned as it did before. The next option from the dealership is in excess of $8,000 for a remanufactured transmission which is outside our reasonable spend, when we dont expect the remanufactured transmission will have any better valve body components. The recent recall did not cover my gas 6.2L sierra 1500, although it clearly is insufficient stating that it just a warning that there is a safety risk present. The valve body of the transmission appears to be an issue across all models and the recall addresses that it is present. We continue to drive this as the primary family vehicle with the hesitation and jerking present as GM dealer offered no support other than $8,000 remanufactured transmission on top of the $4000 we already spent. I believe the recall was insufficent in covering the Gas models with the exact same transmission and known issue. I also believe the offered solution continues to put those driving at risk.Read more

The transmission in my 2022 GMC Savana experiences severe harsh shifting during normal driving conditions. The issue is most noticeable between 1st–2nd gear and 2nd–3rd gear, with 2nd gear being especially problematic. The vehicle jerks and slams aggressively into gear during acceleration, causing unstable driving behavior and hesitation. In addition, when coming to a complete stop, the vehicl
... e jerks forward unexpectedly. When accelerating again from a stop, the transmission jerks hard once more before shifting. This behavior occurs repeatedly during everyday driving and creates a safety concern, especially in traffic, intersections, parking areas, and while merging onto highways. The condition has progressively become worse over time and the vehicle currently has approximately 71,000 miles. The sudden shifting and jerking behavior affects vehicle control and creates concern for the safety of the driver, passengers, and surrounding traffic. No warning lights were present at the time of the issue. The problem appears to be related to the transmission/powertrain system. I also became aware that similar transmission and harsh shifting problems have been reported by other owners of the same make and model vehicle, despite my VIN currently not being included in any recall while others had a transmission recallRead more

2022 GMC Canyon AT4 Crew Cab. After the vehicle is shifted into Park and the engine is shut off, the ignition key cannot be removed from the cylinder. The defect is documented in GM's own literature. GM Bulletin PI1429 and GM TSB 19-NA-206 address this exact symptom on the Canyon/Colorado platform. NHTSA-archived GM TSB MC-10113734 (March 2015), "Ignition Key Cannot Be Removed and/or Does Not Rotate to the 'Off' Position," names the 2015 GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado. The 2022 Canyon uses the same shifter and ignition-interlock architecture. Documented cause: failure of the transmission control lever microswitch that signals "Park" to the interlock solenoid. Documented fix: replace the shifter assembly. Reported to an authorized GMC dealer while still under the New Vehicle Limited Warranty. Dealer recorded the concern verbatim — "key stays locked in ignition when shifting to Park" — and closed it "unable to duplicate," no repair, despite the open bulletins. A second GMC dealer later refused to inspect, with the service advisor stating on the service drive that there is no fix, that they see this on Canyons and Colorados all the time, and that he had seen another such vehicle the day before. No diagnostic, no repair order. GM's Technical Assistance Center has since taken the position that the bulletins above do not apply to this vehicle, which is inconsistent with the bulletins themselves. No crash, no injury, no fire. The vehicle suddenly began vibrating noticeably when idling and at low speeds. About 30 minutes after this started happening a warning lamp lit up. We drove the vehicle about 2 miles to a local auto parts store to get an initial computer diagnosis of the issue. The test resulted in a code of "P0304" which detected a cylinder #4 misfire and recommended a fuel injector replacement. We brought
... the vehicle to a local mechanic to get the issue further evaluated. After this evaluation, it was determined that the cylinder #4 misfire was related to a lifter failure. The mechanic explained that this situation could possibly have caused more damage, specifically to the camshaft, but that job was bigger than he was willing to take on. He recommended we get the vehicle towed to the dealership for further evaluation. He also informed us that this situation was common with the engine in this vehicle and GMC is aware of it. He directed us to some articles online that elaborated on the potential known issues related to the automatic fuel management (AFM) system and the related engine damage. The vehicle was towed to a local GMC dealership for evaluation. They found the failed cylinder #4 with associated lifter failure and damaged camshaft. We went forward with the repair at the dealership. We asked the dealership about the known engine issues with this vehicle. They acknowledged the widespread issues but informed us that our particular VIN has not been included in any recalls or safety notifications, so we were responsible for the repairs. The vehicle spent nearly 3 weeks at the dealership. One of the parts was on backorder due to a national shortage, which delayed the repair by about one week. That seems to imply that the parts involved in this repair are in high demand, which raises the question of this being a manufacturing/parts issue that may need to be investigated further.Read more

We were placed in a very dangerous situation in traffic and struggled with great difficulty and fear just to make it home safely. Once we arrived home, the vehicle completely shut off and would not restart again. This situation was extremely alarming, especially because I had already reported the transmission problems and trusted the guidance given to me that the vehicle was still drivable. My family’s safety was put at risk, and I need this matter to be treated with urgency and seriousness. Please advise immediately on the next steps regarding the vehicle, towing assistance if necessary, and how this situation will be properly addressed. Thank you.Read more

I am filing a safety complaint regarding my 2022 GMC Terrain after experiencing a sudden infotainment system failure that also disabled my backup camera functionality. The infotainment screen in my vehicle suddenly went completely black without warning and without any physical damage to the vehicle. The screen failure caused the backup camera to stop functioning as well, creating a significant sa
... fety concern while reversing and parking. The vehicle currently has approximately 50,000 miles. When I contacted the GMC dealership regarding the issue, I was informed that this is a common problem with GMC Terrains. However, because my factory warranty expired only weeks before the failure occurred, GMC declined to provide any financial assistance or goodwill repair coverage despite acknowledging the issue is commonly seen. This defect directly impacts federally required rear visibility safety equipment and creates unnecessary risk to drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and surrounding vehicles. Backup cameras are an essential safety feature, and the sudden failure of the infotainment system removes access to that safety function entirely. I believe this may be a widespread defect involving the infotainment and electrical systems in the 2022 GMC Terrain and request that NHTSA investigate this issue further for potential recall or manufacturer accountability.Read more

Shift to park dings continuously and vehicle won’t turn off draining battery leaving doors unlocked. Don’t want to force into park and break anything more.

Driving down the interstate and the front trim bezel on the hood flew off. The plastic clips broke from underneath. GM had a recall on this same issue in 2022 but not 2023 yet. Could of had an accident with the piece flying off at interstate speeds.
