MY COMPLAINT IS THAT DOMETIC WILL DO NOTHING TO REPAIR THE WELL KNOWN DEFECT FROM THE MANUFACTURE OF THEIR COOLING SYSTEMS CONCERNING THE PREMATURE FAILURE OF THE BOILER TUBE. FIRST OF ALL DOMETRIC ISSUED A RECALL BECAUSE OF FIRES THAT RESULTED WRONGFUL DEATH AND PROPERTY DAMAGE LAWSUITS. THEY CAME OUT WITH A PREVENTATIVE SOLUTION AFTER THE FACT (I'M NOT ALONE HERE) TO INSTALL A HIGH TEMP. CUT OUT
... SWITCH SO AS TO PREVENT THE UNIT FROM STARTING A FIRE. THIS MEASURE DID NOT DO ANYTHING TO ADDRESS THE PREMATURE FAILURE OF THE BOILER UNIT. THIS LEAVES THE OWNERS OF THEIR UNITS RESPONSIBLE FOR REPLACEMENT COST AND DOMETIC COMPLETELY GETS AWAY WITH A WELL KNOWN AND DOCUMENTED POORLY DESIGNED COOLING UNIT. AT ABOUT 31,600 MILES ON MY RV (2009 FOREST RIVER BERKSHIRE MOUNTED ON A FREIGHTLINER CHASSIS WITH CUMMINS 350HP ENGINE), THE ENGINE SUDDENLY OVERHEATED. DURING REPAIR AT A FREIGHTLINER FACILITY, THREE OF FOUR RETAINING BOLTS WERE DISCOVERED BROKEN ON THE FAN HUB MOUNTED ON THE BACK OF THE ENGINE; THE FOURTH HAD BACKE
... D OUT SEVERAL THREADS AND THE FAN TILTED INTO THE SHROUD AND SEIZED IN PLACE. FREIGHTLINER REPAIR TECHNICIAN STATED THEIR FACILITY HAD MADE SEVERAL REPAIRS ON CUMMINS/FREIGHTLINER CHASSIS RVS; THE FAILURE OCCURS WITH SOME FREQUENCY; THE BOLTS AND DESIGN OF FAN HUB APPEAR TO BE INADEQUATE FOR LOADS APPLIED BY THE SERPENTINE ACCESSORY BELT; AND THAT FAILURE OF ALL FOUR BOLTS COULD SHATTER THE FAN BLADES WHEN IT SEIZES IN THE SHROUD RESULTING IN SHRAPNEL DAMAGE TO THE RADIATOR AND SEVERED ELECTRICAL AND FLUID LINES. FURTHER CONSEQUENCES COULD INCLUDE A NEED TO QUICKLY EXIT TRAFFIC FLOW TO AVOID BECOMING A COLLISION HAZARD. FROM MY UNDERSTANDING, THE FAN HUB, FAN, RADIATOR AND OTHER ACCESSORIES ARE ADDED BY FREIGHTLINER TO THE CUMMINS ENGINE DURING CHASSIS MANUFACTURE. REPAIR REQUIRES CONSIDERABLE AND EXPENSIVE REMOVAL OF ENGINE ACCESSORIES. USE OF THIS CUMMINS/FREIGHTLINER CHASSIS CONFIGURATION BY OTHER COACH MANUFACTURERS IS UNKNOWN. TECHNICIAN ON MY REPAIR DRILLED AND TAPPED A FIFTH BOLT TO STRENGTHEN THE FAN HUB. ONLINE FORUM INQUIRY AND INTEREST FROM OTHER OWNERS SUGGESTS SIMILAR EXPERIENCES. MY 2008 FOREST RIVER BERKSHIRE 390QS MOTORHOME (FREIGHTLINER CHASSIS WITH A CUMMINS 340 HP, 6.7 ENGINE) WITH 13,200 MILES ON IT SUDDENLY OVERHEATED FORTUNATELY ON A 2 LANE ROAD. THE UNIT WAS TOWED TO A REPAIR FACILITY WHERE THE SERVICE MANAGER INFORMED ME THAT THE 4 BOLTS THAT HELD THE FAN HUB IN PLACE HAD SHEARED CAUSING CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE. HE INFORMED ME THAT IN HIS OPINION 4 BOLTS CANNOT HANDL
... E THE STRESS PLACED ON THE FAN HUB. HE FURTHER SUGGESTED THAT I CONTACT FREIGHTLINER TO SEE IF THERE WAS A RECALL ON THIS. I PROCEEDED TO DO THAT AND FOUND OUT THAT THERE IS NO RECALL BUT WAS TOLD THAT THEY DO NOW OFFER A NEW FAN HUB WITH 5 BOLTS. THIS TELLS ME THEY ARE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM BUT ARE NOT GOING TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. I FURTHER FOUND OUT ON THE FOREST RIVER FORUMS WEBSITE THAT OTHERS HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. I FEEL THAT THIS IS A SAFETY CONCERN AS THE BOLTS COULD AGAIN SHEAR OFF WHILE TRAVELING AT HIGHER SPEEDS ON AN INTERSTATE HIGHWAY CAUSING ACCIDENTS, INJURY, AND, PERHAPS, DEATH! COSTS TO REPAIR THIS WORK IS CONSIDERABLE AS IT REQUIRES REMOVAL OF ENGINE ACCESSORIES AND INTERNAL FLOORING. I HAVE A 2011 FOREST RIVER BLUE RIDGE RV (3025 CABIN EDITION). THIS RV IS EQUIPPED WITH GOODYEAR MARATHON ST235/80R16 TIRES. I PURCHASED THIS RV IN NOV. 6, 2010. DURING OUT RECENT RETURN TRIP FROM MAINE WE HAD A BLOW OUT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT OF THE RV. I HAD CHECKED THE PRESSURES THROUGHOUT THIS TRIP. DURING EVER STOP I CHECKED THE TIRES FOR HEATING (LASER THERMO GUN). DURING THIS
... TRIP I HAD NO INDICATIONS OF OVERHEATING OR LOW PRESSURES. (ALL PRESSURE CHECKS WERE TAKEN WHILE THE TIRES WERE COLD DURING THE STAYS AT THE DIFFERENT KOA'S. ON AUG 2, 2012 WHILE TRAVELING ON I-81 IN VIRGINIA WE HAD THIS BLOW OUT. I HAD JUST CHECKED THE TIRES FOR TEMP CHANGES AT THE REST AREA. I CALLED GOOD SAMS TO GET ASSISTANCE IN THE TIRE CHANGE. I THEN MOVED FROM THE I-81 TO A GOODYEAR DEALERSHIP WHERE I HAD THE TIRES REPLACED WITH THE SAME GOODYEAR TIRE. ($213.64 FOR NEW TIRE) WE COMPLETED THE TRIP HOME WITHOUT ANY FURTHER INCIDENTS. I FILED A CLAIM WITH STATE FARM, THE RV WAS DELIVERED TO A REPAIR CENTER WHERE THE COST OF THE REPAIRS WERE $3 663.04 (3 WEEKS IN THE SHOP) BEFORE WE DEPARTED ON OUT NEXT TRIP, WEDNESDAY OCT. 17,2012 I HAD CHECKED ALL OF THE TIRES FOR THE CORRECT PRESSURES, AGAIN COLD, AND ALL TIRES WERE SET TO 80 PSI. ( MY WIFE HAD ME CHECK THESE TIRES AGAIN LATER ON THE 17TH.) WE DEPARTED FOR OUR TRIP OVER TO CANTON, TX. ON THURSDAY OCT. 18, 2012. WE HAD THE 2ND BLOW OUT. THIS TIME ON THE DRIVE SIDE OF THE RV THE REAR TIRE. AT THE LAST REST AREA I HAD CHECKED THE TIRE PRESSURES AND FOR HEATING, ALL LOOKED GOOD. WE WERE AT EXIT 528 ON I-20 JUST 7 MILES FROM OUR DESTINATION. I AGAIN CALLED GOOD SAMS, THE TIRE WAS CHANGED THEN WE PROCEEDED TO THE RV CENTER WHERE WE FOUND 4 OTHER RV'S THAT HAD BEEN CHECKED IN WITH THE SAME ISSUE WITH THE SAME TIRES?? THIS DAMAGE WILL BE ABOUT THE SAME TO REPAIR! NOW IF I FILE THIS ON INSURANCE MY COVERAGE WILL GO UP. AFTER REMOVING THE COVER TO CHECK FOR DAMAGE, BURN MARKS ARE EVIDENT ON THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTION POINTS AND ONE CAN EASILY SEE THAT WIRES HAVE MELTED/FUSED TOGETHER. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 FOREST RIVER CARGO MATE TRAILER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE AXLES WERE DEFECTIVE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHO VERIFIED THE FAILURE AND ADVISED THAT THE AXLES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE WHO DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 25,000.

IN SEPTEMBER 2011 WHILE PULLING MY NEW 2010 FOREST RIVER XLR, WE HAD A TIRE EXPLODE DOWN THE MIDDLE. WE HAD ONLY BEEN ON THE ROAD FOR 20 MINUTES AND TRAVELING AT 55 MPH. WE HAVE LESS THAN 2400 MILES ON THE TIRES. I PERSONALLY CHECK THE TIRE PRESSURE AND LUG NUT ON BOTH MY 5TH WHEEL AND TRUCK BEFORE GETTING ON THE ROAD. I NOTIFIED LIONSHEAD SPECIALTY TIRE & WHEEL AND THEY REFERRED ME TO VOMA TIRE.
