TRAILER CAME EQUIPPED WITH 225/75R15 D TRAIL EXPRESS - POWER TOWING TIRES. NOT LISTED IN YOUR DATA. DEALER INSTALLED A HUSKY 801-1200# LOAD BALANCING AND ANTI-SWAY BAR SYSTEM ON OUR 2008 YUKON XL 1/2 TON SUV. WE TOWED OUR RIG BACK TO FORT MYERS 100 MILES.

I DISCUSSED THIS WITH HUSKY AND THEY INFORMED US THAT THEY RECOMMEND A 2ND (LEFT) SWAY BAR ON ALL TRAILERS OVER 24FT. SO I PURCHASED AND INSTALLED A 2ND SWAY BAR FROM CAMPING WORLD. ON 4/11/14 WE EMBARKED ON OUR 1ST CAMPING TRIP, DESTINATION CLEVELAND, OHIO. BEFORE WE LEFT FORT MYERS WE CHECKED OUT THE ENTIRE TRAILER INCLUDING TIRE PRESSURE AND SET ALL TIRES TO 65PSI COLD. DURING THE DRIVE WE WERE VERY CONCERNED AT THE VIBRATION AND SWAY OF OUR RIG SO WE STOPPED SEVERAL TIMES TO CHECK PRESSURE AND INSPECT THE TIRES. ON OUR 1ST DAY WE DROVE TO LAKE PARK, GA. THE NEXT DAY THE VIBRATION AND SWAY GREW MUCH WORSE. TO BE TRUTHFUL WE BLAMED GEORGIA ROAD QUALITY. WE WERE WRONG! WITH ONLY 653 MILES ON THE NEW RIG WE EXPERIENCED A VIOLENT TIRE FAILURE AT 63 MPH ON I-475 GOING AROUND MACON, GA. WE THEN HAD A 2ND TIRE FAIL ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE TRAILER SO WE REPLACED ALL 5 TIRES. THE 2ND TIRE DID NOT BLOW UP BUT WAS CONTORTED INTO AN "S" SHAPE DUE TO PLY SEPARATION. THE MACON TIRESPLUS STORE MANAGER SAID WE HAD EXPERIENCED SEVERE TIRE PLY SEPARATION POSSIBLY DUE TO THE TRAILER SITTING IN ONE PLACE FOR SO LONG (14+ MONTHS) IN THE HOT FLORIDA SUN. WHEN WE RETURNED TO I-475 WE WERE AMAZED HOW SMOOTH THE ROAD REALLY WAS. I WISH I HAD KNOWN THE SYMPTOMS OF A TRAILER TIRE FAILURE PRIOR TO THIS EXPERIENCE. I PURCHASED A 2013 FOREST RIVER 356 SAQ IN AUGUST OF 2012. I USED IT DURING THE REST OF THAT SEASON. COME TO FIND OUT FOREST RIVER ONLY PUT 6 THOUSAND POUND AXLES UNDER A 40+ FOOT CAMPER. IN THE SPRING I PULLED IT TO A CAT SCALE AND WEIGHED THE UNIT. MY VERY UNLOADED CAMPER REAR AXLE WEIGHT WAS 11,500 LBS. THIS POSES A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE IT WOULD BE VERY EASY TO OVER LOAD AND NOT EVEN KNOW.

WHILE ON OUR 1ST CAMPING TRIP, WE SMELLED SOMETHING ELECTRICAL BURNING. UPON INVESTIGATION, I FOUND THE 50AMP ELECTRICAL LAND LINE BURNED UP AT THE PLUG. WE CUT OUR TRIP SHORT AND IMMEDIATELY CAME HOME. I ATTEMPTED TO HAVE FOREST RIVER AUTHORIZE A REPAIR LOCALLY, BUT THEY WANTED ME TO RETURN TO THE POINT OF PURCHASE (5 HOURS AWAY). ... THE PROBLEM. THE 50 AMP SOCKET HOUSING WAS INSTALLED 180 DEGREES REVERSE (EVEN THOUGH IT SHOULDN'T BE POSSIBLE BECAUSE OF A MOLDED KEYWAY IN THE HOUSING). IN ORDER TO ASSEMBLE THE SOCKET, AFTER WIRING IT, IN THAT MANNER, IT HAD TO BE FORCED TOGETHER. AS A RESULT THE LOCKDOWN FOR THE WIRING CAUSED IT TO PULL AWAY FROM THE SET SCREW AND GROUND TO THE NEUTRAL WIRE. THIS CAUSED A SMALL FIRE WHICH BURNED THROUGH THE HOUSING AND LAND LINE CABLE. WHEN THE CONSUMER THEN WENT TO TAKE THE TIRE ODD THAT WAS LOOSING AIR TO HAVE IT FIXED, LUG NUTS WERE SO HOT, HE COULD HARDLY TOUCH THEM WITH GLOVES ON. THE CONSUMER NOTIFIED THE BUSINESS, THAT HANDLED WARRANTY ISSUES, AND HE WAS INFORMED TO TAKE IT TO A REPAIR FACILITY, AS THE PROBLEM COULD BE A BEARING ISSUE. AS I WAS LEAVING A CAMPGROUND BRAKES FAILED WITHOUT ANY WARNING. THE EXIT FROM CAMPGROUND WAS DOWNHILL AND COULD HAVE BEEN DISASTROUS. ABOUT 10 HOURS INTO A 60-65 MPH TOW FROM ATLANTA ON I-20 IN 95 DEGREE WEATHER JUST PAST THE LA STATE BORDER THE RR GOODYEAR MARATHON ON MY 30' ENCLOSED 13,000 LB TRAILER EXPLODED.. MY TIRE PRESSURE MONITOR SYSTEM INDICATED 98 PSI OF PRESSURE IN THAT LOAD RANGE D TIRE AND 105 DEGREES F TEMP. MY FRONT AXLE E LOAD TIRES WERE READING 115 PSI AND 105 DEGREES F. NO SLOW AIR LEAK OCCURRED, THE TIRE SIMP
... LY EXPLODED CATASTROPHICALLY. I PULLED SAFELY TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY NEAR AN EXIT AND INSTALLED ONE OF THE TWO SPARES I CARRY. THE TRAILER SUSTAINED $300 IN BODY DAMAGE AND THE ADJACENT FRONT TIRE MONITOR ($65) WAS DESTROYED BY FLYING CARCASS DEBRIS. THE TIRE WAS EXACTLY TWO YEARS OLD, ORIGINAL TO THE TRAILER AND HAD JUST 9,000 MILES ON IT. INSPECTION PRIOR TO THE TRIP REVEALED ODD TREAD WEAR PATTERNS BUT THE GOOD YEAR TIRE SHOP I HAD INSPECT IT THEORIZED IT WAS CAUSED BY REAR-AXLE ARTICULATION IN LOW-SPEED TURNS AND OF NO CONCERN TO THE INTEGRITY OF THE TIRE, NOR A REFLECTION OF ANY TRAILER SUSPENSION ALIGNMENT OR LOADING ISSUE.. I SHOULD HAVE PULLED THE TIRE. I NOW BELIEVE IT WAS FORESHADOWING CATASTROPHIC CARCASS SEPARATION CAUSED BY CUMULATIVE HEAT CYCLES. I HAD NEW VALVE STEMS INSTALLED AS TWO WERE FOUND LEAKING AND I HAD THE WHEELS BALANCED. NO AIR LOSS, SIDEWALL BUBBLES OR OTHER MANIFESTATIONS OF PROBLEMS WERE EVIDENT. PER THE GOOD YEAR MARATHON SERVICE BULLETIN, I ALWAYS RUN THESE TIRES 10 PSI ABOVE THE INDICATED COLD SIDEWALL PRESSURE, FOR THIS LOAD RANGE D TIRE, THAT'S 75 PSI. FOR THE E LOADS ON THE FRONT AXLE, THAT'S 90 PSI, UP FROM 80. THIS FOREST RIVER WORK AND PLAY TRAILER WAS DELIVERED TO ME FROM THE MANUFACTURER WITH INCORRECT TIRES -- D LOAD INSTEAD OF E LOAD, WHICH RUN RIGHT AT 3,000 LB WEIGHT LIMIT FOR THE 6K AXLES. I HAVE EXTENSIVELY WEIGHTED AND ADJUSTED MY WD HITCH AND TRAILER LOAD TO ENSURE ALL TIRE CONTACT PATCHES, SUSPENSION AND HITCH COMPONENTS ARE WITHIN THEIR RESPECTIVE WEIGHT CAPACITIES. *TRRead more
