BECAUSE THE PLACARD HAS LISTED THE TWO AXLES AT A TOTAL OF 1636 LBS TOO MUCH, THEY HAVE, IN TURN LISTED THE GROSS VEHICLE WEIGHT RATING AT 15,888, WHICH IS 1636 TOO HEAVY A RATING. RECENTLY EXPERIENCED AN ISSUE WHERE MAIN LIGHTING AND EXTERIOR LIGHTING QUIT WORKING. AFTER TROUBLESHOOTING AND ANALYSIS, I WAS ABLE TO FIND THE ROOT CAUSE. BEHIND THE POWER INVERTER AND CABINETRY I DISCOVERED WHERE ALL THE CAMPER WIRING CAME TOGETHER. I DISCOVERED SEVERAL BUNDLES OF 12V COMMON/GROUND WIRING BUNCHED TOGETHER. I THREE AREAS I FOUND UP TO 7 WIRES CONNECTED TOGETHER WITH A BLUE
... WIRE NUT AND WRAPPED IN ELECTRICAL TAPE. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION, I FOUND THE "BUNDLE" OF WIRES ASSOCIATED WITH THE LIGHTS THAT DIDN'T WORK. AFTER REMOVING THE ELECTRICAL TAPE, I FOUND THE WIRING HAD BEEN POORLY OR INCORRECTLY INSTALLED AND CREATED AN AREA OF HIGH RESISTANCE, RESULTING IN A MELTDOWN OF THE WIRE NUT AND ALL ASSOCIATED WIRES. THIS CAUSES A GREAT CONCERN BECAUSE THERE ARE OTHER AREAS WERE LARGE NUMBERS ARE WIRES ARE CONNECTED TOGETHER AND THEREFORE CREATING A CONTINUED FIRE RISK. ON FEB 9, I WAS INFORMED BY THAT FACILITY'S MANAGER THAT A TREAD SEPARATION HAD OCCURRED ON THE RIGHT REAR TIRE. THE TIRE, THOUGH STILL INFLATED, SHOWED SEVERE WARPING AND DISTORTION OF THE TREAD AND AT LEAST ONE STEEL THREAD PENETRATING THE SIDEWALL. THIS CERTAINLY HAPPENED ON THE 15 MILE DRIVE TO THE FACILITY BECAUSE THE TIRES WERE INSPECTED AT GIANT RECREATION WORLD. I SPOKE WITH JAKE CARTER AT FLAGSTAFF CUSTOMER SERVICE. HE OFFERED ME A NEW, IDENTICAL TIRE OR $75. I TOLD HIM THAT WITH TWO OF FOUR TIRES HAVING CATASTROPHICALLY FAILED, I COULD NO LONGER CONTINUE TO DRIVE ON THIS TYPE OF TIRE. WE WERE PROCEEDING SOUTH ON I-5 JUST SOUTH OF SAN CLEMENTE, CA, 55MPH IN SLOW (RT) LANE PULLING OUR 5TH WHEEL. TIRE (RT. RR OF TANDEM TRAILER) BLEW. I HEARD IT AND FELT IT RIGHT AWAY PULLED OVER TO SHOULDER AS QUICKLY AS I COULD SAFELY, IT TOOK ABOUT 200 YDS. FOUND THAT TREAD HAD PARTIALLY BLOWN OFF AND WRAPPED ITSELF TIGHTLY AROUND THE AXLE BETWEEN THE LEAF SPRING BRACKET AND THE BRAKE SHOE PLAT
... E CAUSING THE WHEEL TO BE UNABLE TO ROTATE AND DAMAGING THE RIM FROM DRAGGING ON THE PAVEMENT. WE WERE ONLY 21 MILES FROM OUR HOME FROM WHICH WE BEGAN OUR TRIP. I ALWAYS CHECK TIRE PRESSURE AT THE BEGINNING OF OUR TRIP ON TIRES OF THE TRAILER AND MY TOW VEHICLE TO INSURE THAT THEY ARE AT MAXIMUM CAPACITY. WHEN THE CONTACT BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO A DEALER FOR A SERVICE REPAIR CALL, THE DEALER FOUND BUCKLES ON THE SIDES OF THE FRONT WHEEL WELLS AND NEAR THE SLIDE OUT, WHICH WAS ALSO STIFF. WE PURCHASED NEW A 2013 ROCKWOOD TRAVEL TRAILER (MODEL 8329SS), THE TRAILER IS OUT OF WARRANTY BUT NOTICED THAT THE 4 TIRES WERE RUBBING ON THE UNDERSIDE OF THE TRAILER, MOST LIKELY WHEN GOING OVER BUMPS.
