Defect: On Freightliner Custom Chassis diesel motorhomes the entire instrument cluster is a single all-digital "OptiView" LCD (Medallion 12.3", part 66-02439-000). The factory adhesive bonding the cover glass to the LCD delaminates under normal service, spreading bubbles and haze across the screen. It is widely reported across many coach brands on this chassis (Newmar, Tiffin, Coachmen, Winnebago,
... Entegra, American Coach) and occurs in cold climates as well as hot - an inherent material defect, not misuse. Safety risk: OptiView puts every primary driving indicator on one screen with no analog backup, so delamination obscures safety-critical information while driving: - Speedometer/tachometer become hard to read on a 30,000-50,000 lb vehicle. - Primary and secondary air-brake pressure gauges and the low-air warning are digital-only; a dropping reservoir or air leak can be masked until the spring brakes apply (FMVSS 121 requires these to stay visible to the driver). - Coolant temp, oil pressure, ABS and brake warnings can be hidden as a fault develops. - The rear/360-degree backup camera view degrades (FMVSS 111 Rear Visibility - the basis for NHTSA Recall 22V281). The failure is progressive and can worsen mid-trip. The manufacturer acknowledges it but calls it cosmetic, quoting about $5,200+ out of warranty for the same failure-prone design. Requested action: Open a defect investigation into OptiView/Medallion cluster delamination across Freightliner Custom Chassis RVs, evaluate under FMVSS 111 and 121, and consider a no-cost recall remedy regardless of warranty status. A detailed report with diagram and citations is attached.Read more

My RV is 2022 Thor Aria 4000, a 40 foot diesel motorhome. On 11-16-22, I picked up my motorhome from my storage lot in Highland (CA) and drove (20 miles) for general service to Trans-West Truck Center 10150 Cherry Avenue, in Fontana, CA. When I left my storage facility, the RV was fully intact. When I arrived at the Trans-West Truck Center, I discovered the 91-gallon water tank (located in fron
... t of the right rear dual tires), had fallen through the wooden floor and dragged on the pavement. Note: My wife who was following me said she saw pieces of what she thought was cardboard flying out from under the RV while I was driving it. If my water tank (which was 2/3 full) would have come loose, it would have fallen under the RV, likely being run over by the tires and careening into traffic behind me or even crashing into my wife. After the RV was serviced at Trans-West Truck Center, they were able to reasonably secure the tank (which had been significantly bent) so I could take it to an RV repair facility. On 11-21-22, I took it for repair to J&L RV Repair (located at 8364 Sultana Ave, Fontana, CA 92335, 909-429-2194). While speaking to the owner, Joe Lozoya, he said he was currently working on another Thor Aria that had the exact same problem in which the water tank leaked and damaged the wooden floor. He said it appeared a factory installed overflow drain line was draining water on the wooden floor weakening it. Upon examining my RV, he said water drained on the wooden (plywood) floor, weakening it. It appeared to be an improper design when manufactured that caused water to drain on the wood and not the ground. I have owned this RV for three years and I know of only ONE time when I overfilled my water tank and saw water drain from the overflow line from under the tank. I could never see where the water drained due to the way the compartment was designed. The factory designed problem is that NO ONE can actually view the water tank as the compartment is coveRead more

Because of the angle of the dash the light from it reflects on the windshield. The gauges can be dimmed but the odometer cannot. This cause a reflection in the direct line of sight. This reflection is a problem despite adjusting the seat and diming the gauges to full off. I have found a covering the entire gauge cluster with cardboard solves the problem.

The after treatment emission system DEF sensors failed. The failed part may be available from Freightliner, but it was under warranty and I they retained the failed part. (Freightliner part # 04-31353-003.) Note: the DEF after treatment system was functioning properly, but sensors monitoring tank level, temperature, and quality failed, sending false info to the ECM that the DEF level was low/empty
... and quality was out of range/poor. This results in an engine derate that leaves the vehicle unable to go above 5 mph. The safety issue is from a mandatory engine derate that leaves the driver only able to reach 5 mph. On an interstate highway with nowhere to pull off, this puts the occupants of the vehicle and other vehicles on the road in danger. This problem has been reproduced by the manufacturer, Freightliner. The "DEF head(er)" unit has proven to have a high failure rate and replacement takes weeks or months because of parts shortages. The part needs to be recalled and the warranty on it needs to be extended until a revised part is available. Currently, the new parts fail at the same rate as the ones being replaced. My warranty will expire in 1 year and this repair would cost $2,000-3,000. There is extensive information on this issue in RV forums. Here is one example: https://www.irv2.com/forums/f26/are-freightliner-chassis-having-def-sensor-problems-518491.html The component has been inspected by the manufacturer's service center, Freightliner. There were no warning lamps, messages, or symptoms before the failure. Warning messages appeared suddenly at the time of failure on 9/29/2021.Read more
