Motorhome engine went into derate mode because of faulty DEF sensor. Spartan is the chassis manufacturer and advises this is a common problem with the DEF sensors. We have since learned there is a protocol to follow to keep engine from going to 5 MPH derate mode but did not know about this at time and Spartan apparently did not know it either because they advised just getting off the road ASAP. DEF head sensor. 5,800 miles on Spartan K2 450 Chassis (2020 Entegra Aspire). Have been told replacement part will not be available until mid-August. While driving from Los Angeles to Phoenix on 03/07/2019, I received a series of check engine lights and warnings. These came and went , then eventually stayed on. When I got to the dealer in Phoenix, they sent me to an engine/chassis repair facility. The red stop engine light came on (with full derate to 5 mph) just as I pulled into the facility lot. (Whew!) The shop had a new head overnighted from Spartan (took 3 days, actually) and repaired under warranty. I am reporting this because these heads are breaking in large numbers now, with a mandatory derate, and if it happens somewhere other than in a shop lot, Bad Things can happen. I understand that there is an investigation going on into this because of numerous failures. I am unwilling to take a long trip across the desert now because I might get stranded.Read more

I contacted Spartan, Entegra, and Coachnet, whom between them, acknowledged the problem and sent a replacement head. Once the head was replaced, fault codes were cleared and I was able to continue. So, other than the monitoring head itself being faulty, all the inputs the head monitored were fine.Read more

Def head sensor failure causing an unsafe derate condition. The rv will only go 5mph causing me to not be able to get to a safe location. As i understand the engine and def system are functioning as they should but the malfunctioning sensor has caused the engine to shut down or derate to 5mph.

My safety concern is my vehicle can be stranded on a roadside which my not be possible for a 45 Foot Motorhome. DEF sensor/head made by Shaw Industries. Currently up to Generation 7. IT IS NOT AVAILBALE FOR INSPECTION TAKEN BY REPAIR COMPANY. Vehicle engine gives warning if you continue to drive will only allow 5 MPH and then shut down. Part was replaced and codes cleared. This is a common problem. Hard to get replacement parts. Codes can be found in SPartan manual.

DEF Head failure, SPN 1761, FMI 3. Bad tank level sensor, will cause derate of engine performance/speed/rpm in an unknow future time period. Will take the unit down to 5 mph with little notice. During this time the DEF pump and after treatment process is continuing with no environmental effects, this is only a tank level sensor failure, but the engine forces an eventual shutdown. This results in a degrade in performance to a point of engine shutdown. Replacement parts are very hard to obtain because this error is so common.

DEF heads failed aftwr only 10k mikes. Was told by Cummins dealer that the Spaetan DEF heads were failing at an alarming rate. I called Spartan and was told by customer service (Hunter) that the DEF heads fail all the time.

Shortly after starting the engine a “CHECK ENGINE” warning appeared on the warning system. I went through diagnostics and found 3 codes relating to DEF head failure. There have been a large number of these in Entegra Coach motor homes in the last 6-12 months.

New part supplied by manufacturer had crystilized DEF on it when recieved at service facility. Suspect supplier may be refurbushing older units, and trying to pass them off as new next generation. SEVERAL OF THE WINDOWS WHICH WHERE MANUFACTURED BY HERH GLASS HAVE COME LOOSE FROM THEIR BRACKETS DUE TO FAULTY ADHESIVE MATERIAL. WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD WHEN THE ADHESIVE COMES LOOSE, THE WINDOW WILL FLY UP AND BE RIPPED OFF THE COACH CAUSING A POTENTIAL ACCIDENT DUE TO FLYING DEBRIS.

WHEN THIS DEVICE FAILS TO WORK PROPERLY, IT THROWS ECM CODES THAT START TO LIMIT THE ENGINE FOR SPEED AND WILL LIMIT THE MILES THE COACH CAN BE DRIVEN. LONG 13' TALL 8' WIDE COACH WEIGHING 45,000 LBS WHILE TOWING ANOTHER VEHICLE IS DE-RATED AND CAN TRAVEL AT NO MORE THAN 5MPH DOWN THE INTERSTATE WILL CREATE A HUGE PROBLEM FOR BOTH THE OWNER OF THE COACH AND THE TRAFFIC THAT IS TRAVELING AROUND IT. WHEN THE DEVICE FAILS, YOU ARE STRANDED AND YOU CAN ONLY HOPE THAT WHEN IT HAPPENS, IT WILL BE IN A PLACE WHERE YOU CAN FIND A PLACE TO PULL OVER. THESE DEVICES DO NOT APPEAR READY FOR "PRIME TIME" AS THEY ARE FAILING FAR TOO OFTEN. MY MOTOR COACH IS A 2014 ENTEGRA COACH BUILT ON A SPARTAN K2 CHASSIS. SPARTAN INSTALLED NEW FRONT TIRES (GOODYEAR G670 295/80/22.5) ON MY COACH ON 4/22/2016. MY COACH WAS WEIGHED AT ALL TIRES AND THE CORRECT TIRE PRESSURE WAS OBTAINED FROM THE TIRE MANUFACTURERS CHART, WHICH IS THE PRESSURES THAT I MAINTAINED. APPROXIMATELY 18,000 MILES LATER ON 8/27/2019 WE WERE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AND THE R
... IGHT FRONT TIRE BLEW FOR NOREASON. WE HAD THE TIRE REPLACED AND CONTINUED ON OUR WAY. ABOUT 2 HOURS LATER OUR LEFT FRONT TIRE BLEW, AGAIN FOR NO REASON. BOTH TIMES WE HAD A TIRE TECH COME OUT AND REPLACE THE BLOWN TIRE. THEY COULD FIND NO OBVIOUS REASON FOR THE FAILURES. AFTER THE FIRST BLOW OUT, I CHECKED THE OTHER TIRES FOR DAMAGE AND FOUND NONE. I ALSO ASKED THE TECH TO CHECK THE OTHER TIRE. HE TOLD ME AFTER HIS INSPECTION AND CHECKING PRESSURE, THAT THE 2ND GOODYEAR TIRE WAS SAFE AND GOOD TO GO. THERE WAS NO DEBRIS IN THE ROAD EITHER TIME. I HAVE A TIRE PRESSURE MONITOR SYSTEM INSTALLED ON ALL MY TIRES. IT HAS ALARMS FOR PRESSURE AND TEMPERATURE ISSUES. I HAD BEEN MONITORING THE TEMPERATURES AND PRESSURES OF ALL MY TIRES DURING THE DAY AND DID NOT SEE ANYTHING ABNORMAL. I DID NOT RECEIVE ANY ALARMS PRIOR TO EITHER BLOW OUT, SO I AM CONFIDENT THE TIRES WERE PROPERLY INFLATED AND DID NOT HAVE SUFFER ANY TYPE OF AIR LOSS. BOTH TIMES IT WAS A SUDDEN CATASTROPHIC INTERNAL FAILURE. BOTH BLOW OUTS CAUSED DAMAGE TO BOTH SIDES OF THE FRONT END OF THE COACH. I HAVE SINCE READ OF NUMEROUS OTHER COACHES LIKE MINE WITH THE SAME GOODYEAR TIRES THAT HAD FAILURES RESULTING IN DAMAGE AND EVEN CRASHES. IT IS A VERY DANGEROUS TO SUFFER A STEER TIRE BLOW OUT AT HIGHWAY SPEED. I BELIEVE THE CAUSE OF MINE WERE POOR QUALITY TIRES THAT WERE NOT DESIGNED WELL ENOUGH TO HANDLE THE SIZE AND WEIGHTS OF MY MOTOR COACH. THE WIRING TO THE BIG AWNING WAS DESTROYED. THESE ARE JUST THE OBVIOUS THINGS I OBSERVED. THE BLOWOUT HAPPENED ABOUT 4:00PM. WE SAT ON THE SIDE OF THE INTERSTATE FOR ABOUT 6 HOURS. THE POLICE WERE A NO SHOW. ABOUT 10:00PM THE TIRE MAN SHOWED UP. HE REPLACED OUR TIRE AND SAID HE THOUGHT THE MOTORHOME WAS DRIVABLE. I DROVE THE RV TO THE REST AREA THAT WAS ABOUT 5 MILES AWAY. THE WRECKER SERVICE WAS WAITING FOR US AT THE REST AREA. AFTER HE EXAMINED THE MOTORHOME HE THOUGHT I SHOULD DRIVE IT TO A REPAIR SHOP INSTEAD OF HAVING IT TOWED. HE TRIED TO BRING IN THE ELECTRICAL STEPS BUT THEY WOULD NOT COME IN. I PARKED THE COACH IN THE REST AREA FOR THE NIGHT. ON DEC. 13TH, I SLOWLY DROVE THE MOTORHOME TO ALLIANCE COACH IN DAVENPORT, FLORDIA. THE MOTORHOME HAS NOW BEEN IN THE COLLISION CENTER FOR 8 WEEKS. THE ORIGINAL ESTIMATE WAS FOR OVER $10,000.
