THE REAR BRAKE ON MY MULTISTRADA WAS VERY GOOD AT PURCHASE. THE PERFORMANCE OF THE REAR DEGRADED SLOWLY AT FIRST. THEN, DURING A 2100 MILE TRIP, THE REAR BRAKE FAILED TO FUNCTION WHATSOEVER. I LEARNED THAT DUCATI WOULD REPLACE SOME COMPONENTS OF THE REAR BRAKE SYSTEM TO IMPROVE PERFORMANCE. HAD THE UPDATED PARTS INSTALLED BY A DUCATI SERVICE TECHNICIAN APRIL OF 2012. MILEAGE ON MY DUCATI WAS ABOUT
... 7000 AT THAT TIME. UPON PICKING UP THE BIKE FROM SERVICE, THE REAR BRAKE WAS FUNCTIONAL BUT NOT AS GOOD AS WHEN THE BIKE WAS NEW. OVER TIME (5MONTHS) AND MILES (1500) THE REAR BRAKE SYSTEM HAS BECOME A SAFETY HAZARD ONCE AGAIN. THE TRAVEL THAT THE PEDAL HAS IS RIDICULOUSLY EXCESSIVE RENDERING THE REAR BRAKE UNRELIABLE TO EFFECTIVELY SLOW AND CONTROL THE VEHICLE. THERE ARE MANY REPORTS ON THE "DUCATI MS" SITE IN THE MULTISRADA SECTION THAT MULTIPLE OTHER REAR BRAKE UPGRADED BIKES CONTINUE TO SUFFER FROM DEFECTS RENDERING THE REAR BRAKE USELESS OR NEARLY SO. THERE ARE ALSO PUBLICIZED, PUBLIC ARTICLES SPEAKING ON THE BRAKE LACK OF PERFORMANCE SUBJECT. DUCATI HAS REPORTEDLY COMPLETELY REDESIGNED THE REAR BRAKE SYSTEM ON THE 2013 MODEL AND HAS ADMITTEDLY DONE SO DUE TO THE POOR PERFORMANCE ON THE 2010-2012 MODELS. THE REAR BRAKE DOES NOT WORK, AND THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE ON A MOTORCYCLE. OVER SEVERAL HUNDRED MILES THE REAR BRAKE PEDAL SLOWLY INCREASES TRAVEL, AND THEN GOES TO THE STOP AND DOES NOT ENGAGE THE REAR BRAKE AT ALL. THIS DUCATI MONSTER S4RS MOTORCYCLE IS ONE OF THE MANY THAT EXPERIENCED DEFORMATION OF THE FUEL TANK AND COMPROMISE OF THE INTERNAL FUEL PUMP OF THE MOTORCYCLE. OVER THE PAST YEAR AND A HALF THE REAR BRAKE HAS FAILED OVER 10 TIMES, IT WILL HAPPEN AFTER MOTORCYCLE IS RIDDEN OVER 30-40 MILES IN WARM TEMPS AT LOWER SPEEDS, AND OF RIDDEN OVER 100 MILE STRAIGHT AT ANY SPEED. ... 6/10/11 THE BRAKE FAILED COMPLETELY AND ALMOST CAUSED A CRASH, BIKE WAS REPAIRED BY DUCATI AT 600 MILE SERVICE BY A BRAKE BLEED, THE BRAKE FAILED MANY MORE TIMES ON LONGER TRIPS INSTILL IT WENT COMPLETELY OUT AGAIN ON THE FREEWAY WHEN I HAD TO MAKE A SUDDEN STOP FOR A CAR THAT CRASHED IN FRONT OF ME, I MISSED THE CAR BY FEET. THE MOTOR CYCLE WAS TAKEN TO DUCATI AGAIN FOR REPAIR, THIS TIME THEY SAID THAT THEY WOULD REPAIR WITH AN "UPDATE" KIT. I PICKED UP THE MOTORCYCLE AND WENT ON A LONG TRIP, THE BRAKE FAILED AGAIN AND THIS TIME PUT MORE STRESS ON THE FRONT BRAKE THAT IT STARTED TO FADE, THIS OCCURRED ON A STATE HIGHWAY. MOTORCYCLE WAS RETURNED TO DUCATI FOR REPAIR AGAIN AT WHICH POINT THEY INSTALLED "HIGH TEMP" BRAKE FLUID. AFTER THIS THE BRAKE HAS FAILED AGAIN 2 MORE TIMES. THIS FIRST AFTER 100PLUS MILES ON THE FREEWAY IN 60-70*TEMPS AT SPEEDS BETWEEN 65 AND 75 MPH. THE SECOND AFTER 20 MILES ON STATE HIGHWAYS IN 80-90*TEMPS. THINGS I HAVE NOTICED WHEN THE BRAKE FAILS, THE ROTOR IN THE REAR IS COOL TO THE TOUCH AFTER I STOP AND GET OFF THE MOTORCYCLE. THE BRAKE LINE THAT IS ROUTED WITH IN INCHES OF THE CAT CONVERTER IS SO HOT I CAN NOT GET CLOSE TO IT. DUCATI HAS TOLD ME THAT THERE IS NOTHING THAT CAN BE DONE TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. I LATER LEARNED OF THE PROBLEM WITH THE GAS TANKS AS DESCRIBED BELOW. THE FUEL TANK ON MY MOTORCYCLE HAS SPREAD AND DISTORTED ENOUGH THAT IT HAS FALLEN OFF THE FRAME OF THE MOTORCYCLE. WHILE RIDING THE MOTORCYCLE AT NORMAL HIGHWAY SPEED, WIND WILL ACTUALLY LIFT THE FUEL TANK UP AND THE RIDER MUST HOLD IT IN PLACE SO IT DOES NOT SEPARATE COMPLETELY FROM THE VEHICLE. ON OCTOBER 28, 2011, WHILE OPERATING MY 2006 DUCATI SPORTCLASSIC I NOTICED THAT THE FUEL TANK WAS LOOSE TOWARDS THE FORWARD PART OF THE FUEL TANK. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION, I OBSERVED THAT THE FUEL TANK WAS NO LONGER SECURED BY EITHER THE LEFT-SIDE OR RIGHT-SIDE MOUNTING BRACKETS ATTACHED TO THE VEHICLE FRAME. IT IS CLEAR THAT THE DIMENSIONS OF THE PLASTIC FUEL TANK OVER TIME HAS WARPED OR CHANGE
... D TO SUCH AN EXTENT AS TO RENDER THE TWO FORWARD SECURING BRACKETS INEFFECTIVE IN THEIR PRESENT STATE. THIS RESULTS IN THE FUEL TANK DEPENDENT SOLELY ON A SINGLE REAR MOUNTING BOLT TO SECURE THE FUEL TANK IN PLACE. AS A CONSEQUENCE, IT IS CLEAR THAT ANY OPERATOR OF THE VEHICLE RISKS INJURY SHOULD THE FUEL TANK COME LOOSE OR BECOME UNSTABLE WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE. IT HAS ALSO BEEN OBSERVED THAT THE FUEL TANK DIMENSIONS HAVE OVER TIME WARPED TO SUCH AN EXTENT AS TO NOW IMPEDE THE FULL USE OF THE VEHICLE STEERING MECHANISM. THIS ALSO RESULTS IN INCREASED RISK OF INJURY TO ANY OPERATOR OF THE VEHICLE. I AM VERY CONCERNED AS TO THE SAFETY OF THIS MOTORCYCLE NOW AS THE REPLACED TANK IS ENLARGED AND DISTORTED IN THE SAME MANNER AS THE PREVIOUS ONE AT ONLY 10050 MILES. IF THE TANK SWELLS ENOUGH, IT MAY POSSIBLY SPLIT OPEN AND I AM CONCERNED THIS WILL HAPPEN WHILE I AM RIDING OR WHEN PARKED INSIDE A BUILDING SPILLING GAS THAT COULD IGNITE OR THE TANK COULD SIMPLY FALL OFF THE BIKE.
