What is a NHTSA consumer complaint?
A consumer complaint is a free-form report filed by a vehicle owner directly to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) describing a safety concern about their vehicle. NHTSA collects these reports through its Vehicle Owner Defect Report (VOQ) system and publishes them publicly. Each complaint includes the affected component, the date and circumstances of the incident, whether the failure caused a crash or fire, and any reported injuries or deaths. The owner's full narrative description is included verbatim, NHTSA does not edit or moderate the descriptions.
The database below contains over 2,245,377 individual complaints. NHTSA's investigators monitor it for clusters of similar reports, when enough owners describe the same failure mode on the same vehicle, NHTSA may open a Preliminary Evaluation that can lead to a recall. Many of the largest recalls in U.S. history, including the Takata airbag recall and the Hyundai/Kia engine fire recalls, started as patterns visible in this complaint database years before they became formal recalls.
How to interpret what you read
A few principles for reading consumer complaints usefully:
- One complaint is anecdote; a hundred similar complaints is data. NHTSA does not investigate the truthfulness of any individual report, that's the job of the Office of Defects Investigation, which looks at the full pattern. When evaluating a vehicle, look for whether multiple owners describe the same chain of events.
- Crash, fire, injury, and death flags are owner-set. They are not verified by NHTSA. They are still useful as a filter, because owners who tick those boxes are typically reporting more serious incidents than those who don't.
- Component categories are NHTSA-assigned, not owner-assigned. NHTSA standardizes the component field so that complaints can be aggregated. The owner narrative often goes into more detail than the component category captures.
- Complaint volume scales with sales volume. A best-selling model will accumulate more raw complaints than a niche model even at the same defect rate. To compare across vehicles, look at complaints per 100,000 units sold, not raw counts.

A safety recall was made back on 9/7/2017 to Jack Wolf in Belvidere, Illinois in reference to the safety recall steering wheel wiring- The inspection stated they installed a wheel wiring and protection sleeve. The headlights and taillights come on randomly throughout the day and night while the car is parked and off. The warning dings for accidentally leaving your lights on happens every time you open the doors even though the lights are off. This has been going on since we got the vehicle.

At less than 70k miles, with full periodic servicing done by Dodge dealer (Moss Bros, San Bernardino, CA) all 12 engine rocker arm mounts failed and had to be replaced at a cost of $1,600. This is a common problem in a 3.6L Pentastar V-6 engine, per internet owner reports on Dodge internet groups. Not caused by normal wear and tear, shouldn't be happening at 60-70k miles.

Delamination of the cars uconnect screen makes viewing the cars reverse camera nearly impossible causing a safety issue while reversing i cant see if there is a kid or incoming traffic that i may be backing into this is a Comon issue that the dealer won’t replace once the car is out of warranty the vehicle hasn’t been inspected but the dealer has said that this is a Comon issue

I have a 2017 vehicle with approximately 75,000 miles. The cylinder head on cylinder 2 is faulty and needs to be replaced. This is approximately a $3000 fix that is being repaired right now. My mechanic told me that this part and/or previous generations of this vehicle have been recalled due to faulty parts. They also encouraged me to file this complaint.

Significant amount of fuel spills from tank, down the side of vehicle and onto the ground during refueling. Unavoidable unless stopped at least a gallon prior to filling tank. Driver rear sliding door stuck in lock position causing a major safety hazard for rear passengers in van. Door will not unlock or open using all unlocking options. Called repair shop and they said this is a common problem with Dodge Caravans. Taking it in for repair soon. I will be getting rid of this vehicle because of this issue in the near future.
