AT 48,510 MILES THE LEFT REAR INNER TIRE TREAD SEPARATED AND BLEW OUT. AT 52,715 MILES THE RIGHT OUTER REAR TIRE TREAD CAME OFF, AND AT 52,793 MILES THE LEFT REAR OUTER TIRE VIBRATED, AND THE TREAD SEPARATED, BUT HELD AIR.

FORTUNATELY THE ROAD WAS STRAIGHT OR I WOULD HAVE LEFT IT FOR SURE! I CALLED COACHMEN (MOTORHOME MANUFACTURER) WHO REFERRED ME TO FORD (THE UNIT HAS A FORD SD53 CHASSIS). FORD INFORMED ME THAT THEY HAD NO REPORTED PROBLEMS WITH THIS UNIT. BUT THEY ALSO TOLD ME THAT 1999 WAS THE ONLY YEAR THAT THEY HAD NOT INSTALLED A STEERING STABILIZER. UP TO 1998 HAD ONE, 2000 AND LATER HAD ONE. THEY WERE NOT RECEPTIVE TO MY REQUEST THAT THEY RETROFIT MY UNIT WITH THIS ITEM AT THEIR EXPENSE AND DID NOT AGREE THIS WAS A SAFETY ISSUE! I VISITED MY LOCAL DEALER WHO INFORMED ME THAT A STABILIZER KIT WAS AVAILABLE FOR MY UNIT. I PAID FOR THE KIT WHICH THEY ORDERED. NEXT DAY I GOT A CALL FROM THE DEALER TO SAY THE KIT WAS NO LONGER AVAILABLE! TO THE DEALER'S CREDIT, THEY FOUND ONE AT ANOTHER DEALERSHIP THAT I WENT AND PICKED UP AND INSTALLED MYSELF. ... THAT IT SOUNDED GREAT. TWO DAYS LATER THE ENGINE STOPPED RUNNING. THE CAMPER WAS TOWED. THE CONSUMER EXPLAINED THE PROBLEM AND THE SERVICE REP. RAN HIS VIN FOR RECALLS. CONSUMER LEARNED THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH FORD F-53 CHASSIS FUEL PUMPS FAILING. HE ALSO STATED HIS SHOP CHANGED 6-8 MOTORHOME FUEL PUMPS IN THE LAST THREE MONTHS. THE ENGINE WAS TESTED FOR PROBLEMS BUT RAN NORMAL. CONSUMER GAVE THE MECHANIC THE O.K. TO REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP WHEN THE PART CAME IN. THE MECHANIC SHOWED HIM THE DIFFERENCE IN THE FUEL PUMPS MANUFACTURED BY FORD. THE NEW ONE WAS ABOUT TWO INCHES LONG WITH A SPRING MECHANISM THAT WOULD ALLOW THE PUMP TO BOTTOM OUT THE GAS TANK. THE OLD PUMP WAS SUSPENDED FROM THE TOP OF THE GAS TANK. HE HAD TO LOWER THE 80K GALLON TANK TO DOWN ABOUT TWO FEET TO GET THE PUMP OUT. THERE WOULD BE 35-40 GALLONS OF GAS IN THE TANK WHILE HE DID THE WORK. CONSUMER PAID THE $1000.00 DOLLAR REPAIR BILL AND RETURNED HOME (1400 MILES) WITHOUT ANOTHER ENGINE FAILURE. CONSUMER FEELS FORD SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FAILURE. CONSUMER STATED HIS ENGINE HAD JUST A LITTLE OVER 20,000 MILES ON IT WHEN THE FUEL PUMP FAILED AND VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. *PHRead more

1998 COACHMEN SANTARA AWNING MADE BY DOMETIC A&E, MODEL 8500, BLEW OPEN WITH A GUST OF WIND. THE ENSUING VIBRATION CAUSED THE FRONT SUPPORT ARM TO DEPLOY AND DROP DOWN. TRANSMISSION FAILED AFTER PULLING A 2,000 LB TRAILER AND CONTENTS FOR APPROXIMATE 2400 MILES. THIS IS WELL BELOW THE TOWING CAPACITY OF THIS VEHICLE. THERE IS NO SET CONSENSUS AS TO WHAT GEAR TO PULL IN. THE TRANSMISSION FAILED AT 39740 MILES WHICH IS ABOUT 3000 MILES OVER THE 36000 MILE WARANTEE AND BEING A 1995 VEHICLE IT IS 5 YEARS OVER THE YEAR WARANTEE. THE AXLE WEIGHTS ARE OUT OF PROPORTION, DUE THE FACT THAT IT'S A REAR DIESEL PUSHER. ALL HEAVY ITEMS BEING CARRIED IN THE VEHICLE SUCH AS TOOLS, CANNED GOODS, ETC. WERE LOCATED IN THE FRONT AREA OF THE VEHICLE. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THIS CAN BE CORRECTED BY ADDING 1000 LBS. OF LEAD TO THE FRONT END, IN REMOVABLE INGOTS, BUT SECURED SO THEY WOULDN'T COME OUT IN AN ACCIDENT. THIS ISN'T CHEAP TO DO, AND SO FAR COACHMAN ISN'T OF ANY HELP. THE VIN # IS: [XXX]. FOR THE SECOND TIME I HAD A SHOULDER SEPARATION, BUT THIS TIME TRVELING AT 35 MILES PER HOUR IN A SMALL TOWN, CAUSING EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THE UNDERCARRIAGE.
