On June 5, 2025, I was driving my 2025 Kia Sorento. I proceeded to get onto the highway from an on ramp. At that moment, the engine stalled. The car would not accelerate. I could not go faster than 20-25 mph. This was a huge safety risk to me, to my passengers, and to others on the highway. The Kia mechanics noted that the fault log in the car's computer system noted that the stalling/failure to accelerate event did occur, but that they were unable to reproduce it, even after several attempts driving it around in various conditions. The Kia mechanics told me there was nothing they could do or fix, since they were unable to reproduce the stalling event. Then just yesterday, on July 6, 2025, the Sorento stalled again while it was being driven on the highway. I am having it towed tomorrow to the same Kia dealership to have the same mechanics look at it again. At this point, this is an extreme safety issue for anyone driving the car, in the car while it is being driven, or on the highway when the car is on the highway. Imagine if the car stalls again and another car behind us traveling at a high speed slams into us. We could potentially suffer mortal or grave physical injury.Read more

This was a sudden and abrupt stop where all control over the vehicle was lost, and I came to an immediate stop in the middle of an intersection. The vehicle would not restart. I could not disengage the parking brake to move the vehicle out of the intersection due to the complete loss of power. The transmission would not shift into Neutral due to the complete loss of power. The hazard lights would not turn on due to the complete loss of power. If this happened on the interstate, I would have very likely been in a serious life threatening /taking accident. This is as big of a near miss that I can think of, and only because it happened on a neighborhood street when no other vehicles were approaching from in front or behind. This is a major safety issue. Below, I have summarized all relevant facts, diagnoses, and correspondence. I purchased this Sonata used from Oakes Kia (Kansas City, MO) in May 2023. At the time of purchase, the vehicle had 77,000 miles. To my knowledge, I am the third owner of this vehicle. Since I bought this car, I have followed the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule: All routine oil changes (every 5,000 miles, or sooner) at Oakes Kia, plus one oil change at Northtowne Hyundai in April 2025. The engine currently has approximately 98,650 miles. I have driven it about 1,000 miles since December 2024 to avoid further damage and due to the danger, it puts me and others in on the road. Since December the vehicle has had persistent shaking, hesitation on acceleration, strong odor, and illuminated Check Engine Light. Car condition has worsened since last oil change and even after coil packs and spark plugs were replaced, there was no improvement. The last oil change was done at Oakes Kia along with a tire rotation and multi-point inspection. They Installed UM018 CH074: Mobil SP 5W30 SN, 21513 23001: Gasket-oil plug and 26300 35505: Filter assy-engine O Service Advisor, Fernando Perez said they did not identify root cause of the shaking, hesitation and strong odor; they instructed me to return to the mechanic who had replaced spark plugs/coil packs, possibly I got a bad spark plug or coil pack. When the light turned green I accelerated and a grinding sound came from my car. I pulled into the plaza and turned the car off but had to turn it back on in about a minute as it was too hot to sit in car without air conditioning. It started and idled just fine. I googled roadside service and got a nice fellow (on a SUNDAY!) and he arrived in about 40 minutes. He towed me 40 miles away to a recommended auto shop that on Monday told me it was my transmission cooler that was defective and that I needed a transmission shop for a new transmission. It was then towed another 20 minutes away where it stayed for 9 days. Cost: $6564.48 plus $150 for paying with a credit card so totaled $6714.48. My drive train warranty was only good to 60,000 miles/5 years and I have 76,000 miles on my car at the time. Was told the transmission cooler was defective so I asked to have the cooler part and I have it in my garage. I spent over $1000 at the dealership in the months of Feb/March/April 2025 as my car hit the 70,000 mile mark so I had them do all work required by the car manual. After purchasing seems the vin was updated with information I was not disclosed. After having issues and getting my registration I started looking at everything more because the dealer registered me as a commercial passenger truck(still don’t know why) but found a report that says Moab/sahara and my seems my vehicles body chasis and motor are all over the place. I’m pretty sure the engine is failing as at one point in one of the reports I found it stated it failed emissions. But the overall worst is that the suspension looks like it came off the titanic compared to the body panels, there’s a lot of welding and rusted or “appearingly tampered” pieces in the chassis and the vehicle seems to be coming apart at every seam. I am currently not driving it because it looks to have sank down to where it could be dangerous I’m pretty sure the suspension, frame, and axles aren’t rated for what’s on it and sounded like something may be coming off at the wheel or axle area last time I did drive it. The vehicle I thought I was purchasing had safety guidelines and there is 2.0 parts, 3.6 parts on this along with random other countries parts. It was bought used “As-Is” but not under the pretense that they assembled it by hand from leftovers. Upon restarting, the overheating issue persisted, with the temperature gauge rising and falling erratically—up to four times during a 15-minute drive. I brought the vehicle to an authorized Jeep dealership service center for inspection. The following findings were documented: Coolant System: High-temperature coolant reservoir found completely empty. Low-temperature reservoir found low on coolant. Evidence of coolant leakage at multiple coolant line fittings. Engine Block: External head gasket leak observed. Pressure test confirmed leaks in coolant lines. Internal Engine Inspection: Spark plugs were removed and coolant residue was found in the combustion chambers. Cylinder walls showed damage consistent with overheating. Slightly burned valves noted during inspection. Based on the findings above, the engine has suffered critical failure due to overheating and internal coolant leakage. The combination of external gasket leaks, coolant residue in the cylinders, damaged cylinder walls, and burned valves presents a serious mechanical and safety concern. Full engine replacement is required. I was driving my car and out of no where for the first time I feel it shaking and making a noise, it did it for a min then it would stop, and it would continue this way every couple of mins. Eventually I pulled over once I could and then turned off the car and turned it back on, once the car was on it would literally not move at all. I could shift the gear stick with no issue to drive and all the other things but I could still not drive my car, it wouldn’t move, there was no parking brake on, nothing. It was on drive but it would not move. At this time there was no lights suggesting anything was wrong with the car. I kept turning it back on and off and then it worked until I got to my destination. Once I got to my destination I was not able to go back home. The car would simply not run. There was no warning lamps or messages of any kind prior to the incident. My safety and others was put at risk because I was on a busy highway and I was not able to drive faster than 20 mph at one point. A car could’ve came at mine driving at 65+ mph stated in the speed limit. I was even able to get off the road at that time either. It was a very scary experience. It wasn’t until the tow truck towed to car to my house that the warning lights came on. Turning on hours after everything had already happened. There was 6 codes that popped up when we checked the car all relating to the transmission. This is a very serious and dangerous situation. I am lucky I didn’t get hurt or anyone driving around me at that time. The car always turns on the slippery road warning light when I drive over 60 miles per hour and the wheels lock up. Sometimes, the ABS warning light also comes on, along with error messages saying 'Service Traction Control' and 'Service StabiliTrak'.
