MY 2 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER UNBUCKLED THE CHEST CLIP ON HER CAR SEAT, THEN MANEUVERED HER SHOULDERS UNTIL THEY WERE FREE WHILE THE CAR WAS IN MOTION. WHEN I CALLED BRITAX TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THIS PROBLEM, THEY TOLD ME "NOT ALL CARSEATS ARE CHILDPROOF" AND TRIED TO SELL A PREVENTATIVE COVER FOR THE SEAT BUCKLE TO ME. THIS COMPLAINT IS REGARDING MY BRITAX MARATHON CAR SEAT. I BOUGHT TWO OF THESE CAR SEATS IN NOVEMBER 02 (MANUFACTURED OCTOBER 02). BOTH HAVE BEEN VERY DIFFICULT TO TIGHTEN THE HARNESS BECAUSE THE ADJUSTER JUST DOES NOT WORK WELL. I CALLED BRITAX WHEN I RECEIVED THESE CAR SEATS AND WAS TOLD IT WAS JUST A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT MECHANISM FROM OTHER CAR SEAT ADJUSTERS, BUT WAS FINE. I HAVE ASKED FOR
... ADVICE ON HOW TO GET IT TO TIGHTEN, BUT NOTHING THEY SUGGEST WORKS. I PERSONALLY FEEL THAT IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO GET THE HARNESS AS TIGHT AS IT SHOULD BE. I HAVE FOUND OUT THAT MANY PEOPLE WHO OWN THESE CAR SEATS ARE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE HARNESS. MANY PEOPLE HAVE CALLED BRITAX AND GOTTEN SIMILAR RESPONSES (BASICALLY BEING BLOWN OFF BY BRITAX). WE HAVE NOW FOUND OUT THAT BRITAX IS ROUTING THE HARNESS DIFFERENTLY THROUGH THE ADJUSTER (THUS, THE REALIZED THAT THE ORIGINAL METHOD DID NOT WORK AS IT WAS SUPPOSED TO). I HAVE CALLED BRITAX NUMEROUS TIMES ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT ROUTING IT EITHER WAY IS FINE. THEY OBVIOUSLY REALIZED THERE WAS A PROBLEM, SO HOW CAN EITHER WAY BE FINE? I PERSONALLY DON'T THINK IT IS FINE SINCE IT PUTS A CHILD'S LIFE IN HANDS SHOULD YOU NOT BE ABLE TO PROPERLY TIGHTEN THE HARNESS. IT IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT, IF NOT NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE, TO TIGHTEN THE SAFETY STRAPS. IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT BRITAX HAS CHANGED HOW THEY LOOP THIS STRAP SINCE THIS SEAT WAS INITIALLY SOLD. I PURCHASED A BRITAX MARATHON CAR SEAT AT 250.00 AND THE STRAPS DO NOT EASILY ADJUST ON THE 5 POINT HARNESS. I AM CONCERNED THEY DO NOT HOLD MY SON FIRMLY ENOUGH. BRITAX HAS SAID IT IS NOT A PROBLEM BUT MANY PEOPLE HAVE E-MAILED IN AND ALL HAVE THE SAME COMPLAINT. MINE IS THE EARLIER MODEL AND THEY SHOULD FIX IT FOR SAFETY REASONS. I HAVE BEEN USING THE BRITAX MARATHON FOR MY SON SINCE DEC (WHEN HE WAS 6 MONTHS OLD). FROM THE START, I HAD PROBLEMS TIGHTENING THE STRAPS AROUND HIM, DESPITE THE FACT THAT HE IS NOT A SQUIRMER. THE STRAP THAT MUST BE PULLED TO TIGHTEN THE HARNESS STRAPS ON THE BRITAX MARATHON CAR SEAT HAS BEEN ROUTED INCORRECTLY IN SOME OF THE SEATS. THE INCORRECTLY ROUTED HARNESS STRAPS ARE EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO TIGHTEN AROUND THE CHILD. BASED ON DISCUSSIONS WITH OTHER MARATHON OWNERS, IT APPEARS THAT THIS PROBLEM OCCURRED DURING THE FIRST FEW MONTHS AFTER THEY FIRST BEGAN SELLING THIS SEAT. I HAVE
... TWO MARATHONS. ONE MANUFACTURED IN AUGUST 2002 (WHEN THEY FIRST CAME OUT), AND ONE MANUFACTURED IN JANUARY 2003. THE NEWER SEAT IS FINE AND CAN BE TIGHTENED EASILY. THE AUGUST SEAT HAS THE FLAW AND I NO LONGER USE IT. WHEN I CALLED BRITAX, THEY ACKNOWLEDGED THAT THE STRAP HAS BEEN THREADED TWO DIFFERENT WAYS, BUT SAID BOTH WAYS HAVE BEEN TESTED AND ARE SAFE. WE TOOK OUR BRITAX ROUNDABOUT CARSEAT FOR A CARSEAT INSPECTION BY A CERTIFIED TECHNICIAN AND HE DETERMINED THE CARSEAT WAS BROKEN, THE RECLINE LEVER ON THE BOTTOM OF THE SEAT DOES NOT LOCK IN EITHER THE RECLINE OR UPRIGHT POSITION. THE STICKER AND THE INFORMATIONAL BOOKLET FOR USAGE OF THIS SEAT ARE MISLEADING. THE STICKER CLAIMS A CHILD MAY BE SEATED REAR FACING UNTIL 30 LBS AND WHOSE HEIGHT IT BETWEEN 19 AND 30 INCHES. THE MANUAL HOWEVER DOES NOT SPECIFY THE HEIGHT REQUIREMENT. CONSUMERS SON OUT GREW THE ABILITY TO SIT REAR WARD AND WILL NOT REACH 30 LBS UNTIL AGE 2 AND A HALF . *JG
