The starter on my BMW failed, and it overheated and damaged my alternator to the point that I needed to replace it. The dealer and independent service center confirmed that this was the cause, but BMW is refusing to reimburse the cost of the alternator replacement. I was at the exit of a highway and could not even put the car in neutral, so my safety was significantly at risk.

While driving the vehicle, the blower (A/C) began to cycle on and off. Then I began to smell electrical smoke. Then I began to see smoke coming from vents and where the windshield meets the dashboard, closer to the passenger side. I pulled over and shut off the car as the smoke was getting worse inside the car. I popped the hood and saw smoke coming from the passenger side. I then called 911. Sm
... oke was beginning to billow from engine compartment. As I was talking to the 911 dispatcher, I saw flames beginning in the engine bay close to the firewall on passenger side. The car was a total loss and is in a tow yard. It can be inspected upon request. The 911 operated told me to be aware of smoke and explosions so I backed away about 30ft. Many cars were passing by, close to the car. There are 2 safety recalls on this vehicle that are related to possible fire. I have an open case with BMW USA. They have not inspected the car. I have liability only for insurance so they will not cover. There were no warning lamps or indicators before fire.Read more

The front passenger side door is unable to open from inside or outside the vehicle. The door actuator failed, and this has been confirmed by the dealer. This is an obvious safety issue as it prevents egress in an emergency. According to Internet forums, this seems to be a known issue across BMW platforms.

2021 BMW X3 M40i – Starter Motor Failure Matches NHTSA 26V056000 Defect (No-Start at Stop Light + Excessive Starter Torque Fault + Fire Risk) I am filing this safety complaint regarding a sudden starter motor failure on my 2021 BMW X3 M40i. On March 31, 2026, the vehicle stalled at a stop light and displayed the message “car can be restarted in XX seconds.” After the timed period elapsed an
... d a few restart attempts, the vehicle would not start and had to be towed to Sewell BMW Mini of Plano, Texas. The service department at the dealership diagnosed a faulty starter motor. The technician’s notes explicitly state: “checked faults for excessive torque and found starter motor faulty” and the vehicle inspection video shows the starter unraveling. They quoted $2,060.50 to replace it under reliability concerns. This failure mode - sudden no-start at idle/stop with the timed restart lockout and “excessive torque” fault - is identical to the defect in NHTSA Campaign 26V056000 announced January 2026, affecting 2021–2024 X3 models. That recall describes internal starter wear causing no-start conditions and potential overheating/fire risk. BMW has already acknowledged and is replacing the starter for free on thousands of nearly identical G01 X3s. The service manager at Sewell BMW of Plano also confirmed that prior B58-engine X3 M40i models, same engine family as mine, have had starter recalls for the same issue. Despite this clear precedent, BMW North America denied our goodwill request for coverage due to it being out of warranty and that we’re not the original owners of the vehicle. We believe this is a safety defect that BMW should remedy at no cost, consistent with federal standards and their handling of the identical issue on other X3 models. Please investigate and require BMW to provide free remedy or full reimbursement. This poses a real safety risk due to a sudden stall while driving and potential fire as demonstrated in other recalled BMW X3s within the same year.Read more

My car was parked at home and hadnt been driven in hours. My neighbor contacted me, saying that my car was on fire. I went outside, and it was on fire, and the fire department was called. After BMW conducted an investigation, they deemed the car fire to be related to the active recall. The manufacturer (BMW) is violating the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act (49 U.S Code Section 3012
... 0) by refusing a "remedy without charge" for recall 24V-536. A manufacturer is required to provide a remedy for a safety recall "without charge." BMW is offering a loan payoff (21,851.37). This current offer violated this federal statute by forcing me to absorb the loss of my $2500 down payment and accumulated equity. Additionally, Case Management is threatening to revoke my essential transportation (loaner) unless I sign a settlement that omits a verbally promised $4,000 credit buy with non-complaint conditions: it is a restricted discount only valid for future BMW purchases, it was omitted from the legal contract that I am being pressured to sign, and it places burden on me, the victim, to find a replacement vehivle while threaten to revoke my loaner transportation. This is a clear attempt to bypass the federal requirement for a free and complete remedy for a dangerous safety defect. I have attached a picture of the fires along with the fire department report, and the email thread between Case Management of BMW and me. On March 25, 2026, I was offered a loyalty goodwill of $4,000 after the purchase of a BMW from their dealership. March 26, 2026, I was told to contact my loan finance company to inquire about a collateral substitution. After I emailed the CEO and VP of BMW executives, I was then asked about what car I was interested in as a substitute for collateral. March 31, 2026, I am told to coordinate with the dealership as well because the BMW corporation doesn't coordinate with the dealership about the substitution of collateral.Read more

Incident date: Mar 30, 2026
I am reporting a potential safety defect in BMW vehicles equipped with the B58TU engine, primarily model years 2019–2021. These vehicles use an oil pump containing an internal plastic component responsible for regulating oil pressure. This component has been reported to fracture in service, resulting in sudden and complete loss of oil pressure. Failures commonly occur during cold starts in low
... ambient temperatures. When the component fails, oil pressure may become erratic or drop to zero with little or no advance warning. In some cases, drivers may observe warning signs such as inability to measure engine oil level electronically, abnormal oil pressure behavior, or drivetrain malfunction warnings. These conditions can rapidly escalate to engine shutdown or severe engine damage due to oil starvation. This defect presents a significant safety risk, as vehicles may become disabled unexpectedly while driving or shortly after startup. Sudden loss of propulsion increases the risk of traffic incidents, particularly if the vehicle becomes immobilized in active traffic lanes. The risk is heightened in winter conditions, when failures are more likely and occupants may be exposed to freezing temperatures while awaiting assistance. Repair typically requires extensive engine disassembly, with costs ranging from approximately $6,000 to $8,000, excluding potential engine damage. A key concern is that owners cannot reliably determine whether their vehicle is equipped with the original plastic component or a revised metal version. BMW’s VIN-based parts systems now reflect updated components even if the original part remains installed, and the original plastic component is no longer listed in dealer parts catalogs. Reports indicate failures across multiple production years, and the full scope of affected vehicles is unclear. Given the potential for sudden vehicle disablement without adequate warning, this issue warrants investigation as a safety-related defect.Read more

Vehicle History & Initial Defect: I took delivery of a used 2025 BMW i5 in November 2025 (~1025 mi). Upon delivery, the vehicle immediately displayed a persistent "Acoustic Pedestrian Warning" failure. This was a direct violation of FMVSS No. 141 (Minimum Sound Requirements for Hybrid and EV). Despite dealer assurances that a software update would resolve the issue, the failure persisted through m
... ultiple repair attempts in late 2025 and early 2026. Critical System Failures (Jan-Apr 2026): On January 18, 2026, the vehicle experienced a catastrophic drivetrain failure while in motion, displaying the messages: "Stop. Apply parking brake. Drivetrain malfunction. You cannot continue driving" and "Stop carefully now. Faults. Do not continue driving." The vehicle was rendered inoperable. Subsequently, the vehicle has been subject to five (5) total repair attempts for these and related electronic faults, including "Phantom Warnings" of the hood and trunk being open while traveling at highway speeds. Unintended Emergency Braking Event (April 4, 2026): Within 48 hours of a 31-day repair stay (where the manufacturer insisted the vehicle was safe), the Driver Assistance Professional Package (DAPP) failed. While driving on a high-speed highway, the system prompted me to place my hands on the steering wheel. I complied immediately, yet the vehicle failed to recognize human intervention. The car then initiated a sudden, unintended emergency braking maneuver in active traffic. There was a significant lag before the system relinquished control, nearly resulting an accident. Manufacturer Negligence: Despite these life-threatening failures and the vehicle meeting the 30-day out-of-service threshold under California law, BMW North America has formally denied a repurchase on 3Apr26.
They have failed to warn of continued safety risks and persist in claiming the vehicle is repaired despite repeated recurrences of the same failures. I am submitting a formal safety complaint regarding a defect in my 2020 BMW X3 that has resulted in the failure of a critical emergency safety system. The vehicle displayed an error message indicating an “Emergency Call System Malfunction.” I brought the vehicle to BMW of Murrieta on March 30, 2026, for diagnosis and repair. Upon inspection, the service center determined that the Telematic C
... ontrol Unit (TCU) had sustained water damage. This damage was attributed to water intrusion originating from the vehicle’s shark fin antenna. This is a known issue documented by BMW in internal Service Information Bulletin SIB 65 12 22 (dated October 5, 2022). Despite acknowledgment of this known defect, BMW declined to cover the repair costs for both the antenna-related water intrusion and the resulting damage to the TCU. This failure presents a significant safety hazard. The emergency call system is designed to automatically notify emergency services in the event of a collision. With this system inoperable, occupants may be unable to receive timely emergency assistance, increasing the risk of serious injury or death. Given that BMW is aware of this defect and its potential to disable a critical safety feature, I believe this issue warrants further investigation and should be considered for a mandatory safety recall.Read more

The electric A/C compressor on my 2022 BMW X5 xDrive45e (VIN [XXX] ) failed internally at approximately 59,000 miles, causing metal debris to circulate throughout the refrigerant system. The failed compressor and contaminated components are at BMW of Sterling (Sterling, VA) and available for inspection. This is a safety concern because the A/C refrigerant circuit provides thermal management for th
... e high-voltage hybrid battery. BMW of Sterling's service advisor confirmed in writing that the A/C system is "a critical component of your vehicle's HV system," that there is no independent backup cooling system, and that the failure "can cause potential high voltage battery failures." Without active cooling, the HV battery is at risk of overheating, which could result in a thermal event. The failure was diagnosed and confirmed by BMW of Sterling. They categorized the repair as "EHV: FULLY ELECTRIC OR HYBRID VEHICLE DRIVETRAIN DIAGNOSTICS" with the complaint "HIGH VOLTAGE SYSTEM ERROR." The repair estimate is $11,356.59 and requires replacement of the compressor, condenser, all expansion valves, and a double system flush. BMW Service Information Bulletin SI B64 09 21 documents this exact failure pattern for the G05 X5 xDrive45e, and BMW created a dedicated repair kit (part 64 50 5 A5B 590) for it. This is my second major HV component failure. A battery cell replacement was performed under warranty in 2025. Both failures were confirmed by the dealership to be component defects unrelated to owner use. Prior to complete failure, a fan noise was present in the front driver's area for a period of time before it stopped, consistent with the compressor degrading before failing entirely. A high voltage system error was displayed. BMW NA (case #XXX) has declined warranty coverage despite the vehicle being within the 8-year/80,000-mile HV battery warranty. I was driving my 2025 X7 and the sunroof unexpectedly and spontaneously exploded above my head. I had left my house about 2 minutes prior, driving 40 mph on street near my home. I was in the middle lane of a 6-lane wide street, no car ahead of me and no cars to the side or behind me. Nothing hit my car at all. The glass from the sunroof shattered leaving a large hole, and glass was caught in the s
... un shade as I had it closed. Had the sun shade been open, I would’ve had glass explode in my face while driving, putting my life in danger. I also have 3 children in car seats who thankfully were not present during the incident. BMW will not acknowledge that this is a defect in the manufacturing or design and are essentially gaslighting me saying a rock hit my car. Again, no car ahead of me in the 100 yards I could see ahead that would suggest anything hit my car. No warnings from the car at all, just spontaneous glass explosion above my head. This is a design flaw at BMW that must be addressed before it kills someone.Read more
