I am submitting a claim pertaining to NHTSA Recall Number 25V636000 which pertains to a engine starter issue that can result in fire. This recall was reported first on September 23, 2025 and has been gone without a remedy. Since as of today, it has been 212 days without a solution that I am driving a car that may catch fire. This is too long and I am seeking remediation in the form of a replacemen

The engine oil pump has an internal plastic housing that can fail and will cause oil pressure variations and even low pressure which can lead to engine failure. This has been documented for a while on various b58tu engines. This a very costly repair that can easily be 5000-6000 usd. Failure of the said part can also render that vehicle unable to drive.

While driving my 2021 BMW X7 at approximately 32,000 miles, the vehicle suddenly displayed a drivetrain malfunction warning along with a low engine oil pressure warning. At the same time, I noticed excessive heat and a strong burning smell coming from the vehicle. I also heard abnormal mechanical noises coming from the engine, which sounded like knocking or grinding. The engine failure occurred u
... nexpectedly at relatively low mileage and required extensive repairs, with estimated costs of approximately $15,000. A sudden loss of oil pressure and abnormal engine noises while driving creates a serious safety risk because it can lead to engine damage, loss of power, or the vehicle becoming disabled in traffic without warning. Based on the diagnosis and information from the repair facility, the failure may be related to an internal engine or oil pump issue affecting lubrication. I am reporting this incident because similar failures have been reported by other BMW owners, and I believe this condition warrants investigation as a potential safety-related defect.Read more

Spontaneous sunroof shatter.
Incident date: Apr 15, 2026
On April 15, 2026, while driving on the highway with my family in my 2025 BMW X5 (purchased new on September 25, 2025 from Principal BMW of Corpus Christi for approximately $75,000), the panoramic sunroof suddenly and violently exploded. The explosion sounded like a gunshot. Shards of glass sprayed throughout the cabin and got into our eyes. I was barely able to maintain control of the vehicle and
... prevent a serious accident that could have resulted in hospitalization or worse. Photos of the sunroof taken immediately after the explosion are attached to this email. These images clearly show the large shattered section, missing glass fragments, and debris inside the sunshade right after the failure. You can also see from the picture submitted from the front, the glass is pushed out from the car. This was an extremely dangerous safety failure that put my entire family at immediate risk. Because of this incident, I no longer feel safe driving the vehicle. I am now constantly on high alert, worried that the sunroof could explode again at any moment. This traumatizing experience has completely ruined my ability to enjoy what was supposed to be a luxury vehicle. Instead of the premium driving experience I paid for, I am left with fear and anxiety every time I get behind the wheel. This is not an isolated or “unheard of” incident. BMW has faced multiple reports and a class action lawsuit regarding exploding sunroofs dating back to at least 2017. Despite this known issue, when I contacted Principal BMW of Corpus Christi, the dealership claimed the problem was unheard of and showed absolutely no sense of urgency or willingness to address it properly. The service person took a quick look and told me that this incident has happened two other times within the last two months. Since the incident happened on 4/15/26 @ 6:35PM I was unable to speak to a service member.Service person told me to bring my car in for further evaluation on 4/20/26 since he’s only one working.Read more

Incident Description: While driving with my two [XXX] children and husband under normal conditions, the panoramic sunroof glass on my 2025 BMW X5 xDrive50e suddenly and unexpectedly shattered without warning. At the time of the incident: There were no weather events (no hail, debris, or extreme conditions) I did not observe any object striking the vehicle There was no prior damage to the
... sunroof The glass failure was abrupt and loud, sounding like an explosion, consistent with a sudden break rather than gradual damage. There were no warnings or symptoms or sounds of impact prior to the explosion. I immediately documented the damage with photographs taken at the scene, prior to any inspection or handling. Safety Concern: This incident raises serious safety concerns: The sudden shattering of the sunroof could startle or distract the driver, increasing the risk of an accident Broken glass could fall into the vehicle cabin, posing a risk of injury to occupants The unexpected nature of the failure creates a hazard at highway speeds This type of failure appears consistent with reports of spontaneous tempered glass breakage, sometimes referred to as “exploding sunroofs.” Manufacturer Response: The vehicle was inspected by the dealership, BMW of San Rafael, and escalated to BMW of North America. BMW determined that the damage was caused by “impact” and denied warranty coverage. However: No clear point of impact (such as a chip, crater, or penetration point) has been identified No foreign object residue or evidence of impact has been provided The determination appears to rely on a visual interpretation of crack patterns, rather than confirmed physical evidence Based on my observations, the fracture pattern appears irregular and distributed, including along the edges, which may be consistent with stress-related or spontaneous failure. Incident date: Apr 8, 2026
I experienced a complete failure of the rear pneumatic (air) suspension system on my vehicle. This system uses rubber air springs (“airbags”) rather than conventional coil springs. When it failed, the rear of the vehicle dropped significantly, causing metal-to-metal contact, an extreme upward pitch of the front end, and pronounced instability. The vehicle became difficult to control, with exce
... ssive rear sway creating an unsafe driving condition. Based on my experience and publicly available information, this appears to be a known and recurring issue affecting BMW X5 and X6 models (E70, F15, and G05). The failure is commonly attributed to degradation of the rubber air springs, which can dry out, crack, or leak. When leaks develop, the compressor runs excessively and may fail, resulting in sudden loss of suspension support. While these components may be considered wear items, the frequency and relatively early occurrence of these failures suggest a design or engineering vulnerability rather than typical maintenance. Failures are widely reported between approximately 50,000 and 100,000 miles or within 4–7 years, indicating a pattern of premature degradation. This condition can occur without clear warning, including after the vehicle has been parked, meaning drivers may not recognize the issue until the vehicle is unsafe to operate. Once the system fails, handling is severely compromised, increasing the risk of loss of control. Repair costs often exceed $5,000, which may discourage timely repairs and leave vehicles in unsafe condition. BMW characterized this as a maintenance issue despite the apparent pattern. I am submitting this complaint because this condition poses a serious safety risk. A sudden loss of rear suspension support at speed could result in loss of control, increasing the risk of a crash, injury, or fatality.Read more

It has come to my attention that liquid from the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system may leak onto the water pump electrical connector. I respectfully request that NHTSA investigate this matter and determine whether a safety recall is necessary to address this defect. I am reporting a safety concern involving BMW vehicles equipped with the B58 Technical Update (B58TU) engine, commonly found in model years 2019–2021. These vehicles use a variable-displacement oil pump with an internal thermoplastic component that regulates oil pressure. This component is increasingly failing in the field, often fracturing and causing sudden loss or instability of oil pressure
... . Failures commonly occur during cold starts in low temperatures. When the component breaks, oil pressure may become erratic or drop entirely, often with little or no warning before engine damage or vehicle shutdown. Early warning signs can include inability to measure oil level, abnormal oil pressure behavior, or drivetrain malfunction alerts. In many cases, failures quickly lead to engine shutdown or severe damage due to oil starvation. This can leave vehicles suddenly disabled while driving or shortly after startup, creating a safety risk—especially in traffic or in cold weather, where occupants may be exposed to freezing conditions while waiting for assistance. Repair requires extensive disassembly, with oil pump replacement alone typically costing $6,000–$8,000, excluding additional engine damage. Owners also cannot reliably determine whether their vehicle has the original thermoplastic component or an updated metal version, as parts databases now default to the revised design regardless of what is actually installed. Failures have been reported across multiple model years, and the full scope of affected vehicles remains unclear. Because this issue can cause sudden vehicle disablement without adequate warning—particularly in cold conditions—it may represent a safety-related defect warranting investigation.Read more

I'm reporting a safety issue with BMW vehicles equipped with the B58TU engine, primarily 2019-2021 models. These vehicles have an oil pump with an internal plastic component that regulates oil pressure, and this part is fracturing in the field, causing sudden loss of oil pressure. The failure typically occurs during cold starts in low temperatures. When it fails, oil pressure becomes erratic or is
... lost entirely, often with little to no warning before engine damage or vehicle disablement. Warning signs, when present, include inability to measure oil level electronically, abnormal oil pressure, or sudden drivetrain malfunction warnings. These can rapidly progress to engine shutdown or severe damage from oil starvation. This creates a dangerous situation because the vehicle can become disabled without warning while driving or after startup. This is especially hazardous when cars become immobilized in traffic or during winter conditions when failures occur most frequently, leaving occupants exposed to freezing temperatures while awaiting assistance. Pump replacement requires extensive disassembly and commonly costs $6,000-$8,000, assuming no engine damage. A critical concern: owners cannot determine if their vehicle has the original plastic pump or the later metal revision. BMW's VIN-based parts lookup now shows updated components even when original plastic parts remain installed, and BMW has removed the original plastic part number from dealer networks entirely. Failures are reported across multiple production years, and the scope of affected vehicles remains unclear. Because this condition causes sudden vehicle disablement without adequate warning, especially in cold weather, I believe this warrants investigation as a potential safety-related defect.Read more

I recently took my 2019 X5 to the BMW dealership because of the recall (Engine starter) and the code P0456 (NVLD Minor Leak Fault). At the same time, there's a warning that says, "Oil at a minimum level. Add 1 liter immediately". I have the 3 Year Oil Plan and asked them to put some oil, but the dealership said that they can't add oil because the oil level wouldn’t read properly. They told me
... they couldn’t diagnose it without charging me an extra $300 for further testing. Then, I read a lot of threads online and it seems that BMW quietly changed the pump to an all-metal design around 2020 but never issued a recall or extended warranty for the earlier cars. There's a lot of customers complaining with the B58TU engine found in many 2019–2021 BMWs (X5 xDrive40i, 540i, 340i, etc.). The variable oil pump uses a plastic internal adjusting ring that cracks over time. When it fails, oil pressure becomes unstable or is lost, often with little warning. A common early symptom is the oil level sensor test failing and stopping around 12-20%. In the worst cases, it can lead to sudden engine damage or the car shutting down while driving. I called up my mechanic, and he said that this is a common problem and it could be an oil pump issue that needs to be replaced. I asked him for a quote and he said approximately $5k or more. I believe this is a safety defect that deserves investigation Hoping for your kind consideration. I plan to keep my car as long as possible Thanks, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)Read more

Component: Front differential / xDrive drivetrain system. Vehicle is available for inspection upon request. Description: My 2020 BMW M340i xDrive has exhibited a persistent whining noise from the front drivetrain since approximately 38,000 miles. The noise varies with speed and load and appears to originate from the front differential. A BMW dealership inspected the vehicle and acknowledged the n
... oise but declined repair under warranty. This condition is consistent with premature wear of internal differential components such as gears or bearings, or improper lubrication. Differentials should not produce whining noises at this mileage, indicating a potential defect. Safety Risk: The front differential is critical to torque distribution in the all wheel drive system. Progressive failure could result in drivetrain binding, uneven torque delivery, or loss of AWD functionality. In a worst case scenario, partial or full differential seizure could occur, leading to sudden resistance, instability, or loss of control. These risks are heightened at highway speeds or in low traction conditions such as rain or snow. The vehicle provides no warning lights or messages despite the abnormal condition, meaning failure could occur without advance notice. Inspection: Issue confirmed by BMW dealership. No repair or corrective action performed. Warnings/Symptoms: No warning lights or system messages. Only symptom is a persistent whining noise from the front drivetrain. Additional Information: I am aware of similar complaints from other BMW xDrive owners reporting drivetrain whining, grinding, and vibration, suggesting a broader pattern of premature differential wear.Read more

The crack has since spread approx. halfway across the windshield. I'm concerned that this will continue until the windshield fails. I took it to the dealer who agreed that it didn't appear to have been struck
... by a rock or anything else, but the dealership has refused to take responsibility. I looked up possible recalls on this issue and discovered that BMW has recalled other similar models for this problem, but not this model. I believe that this is an issue that should result in a recall and subsequent replacement of the windshield and I wanted to make the NHTSA aware of it.Read more

The fuel system was causing my engine to shut down, and I got it replaced at a mechanic. About some time later, after fixing the fuel system, I received a letter from BMW telling me that they had extended the warranty on the Fuel tank, but when I took it in, they said that there was no such extended warranty. The letter is from April 2022, but I just recently found it.

Vehicle is experiencing critical mounting component failure very early on. Vehicle has under 50k miles but the engine mounts and thrush rod bushings are failing, putting the car at risk when driving or starting. It has been inspected by the dealership and the manufacturer has confirmed that the issue exists.

Good afternoon. I have called and spoken to my local BMW dealership at Grayson BMW service department many times. As of today they report no remedy and have no idea when a resolution will be available. Filing this complaint (second formal written complaint) due to lack of this not being in any sort of "timely manner." This recall is noted as an URGENT FIRE RISK WHEN PARKED for almost seven mon
... ths now. I have parked the car outside and through the winter and now getting into the summer. In looking up this recall and reading associated documents, it seems there has been a remedy to many makes and models but still nothing for the 2020 330i, and no word on what to do, advisement, or timeline on resolution. I called the NHTSA hotline but after waiting, decided to attempt another written complaint. Previous complaint #11712900. Safety Hazard: Oil Pump Failure Leading to Sudden Engine Stall (BMW B58TU engines) Description of Defect: The oil pump module in the 2020 BMW M340i (G20) contains internal plastic components that are prone to thermal degradation and premature failure. These plastic parts can crack or disintegrate, causing a sudden loss of oil pressure. Increasing wear on internal engine components and even leadin
... g to irreversible engine damage. Safety Risk: A failure of the oil pump leads to insufficient lubrication of critical engine components, which can result in a sudden and complete engine seizure while the vehicle is in motion. This causes an immediate loss of propulsion and power steering assist, significantly increasing the risk of a high-speed collision or being stranded in dangerous traffic conditions. Additional Note: This is a known mechanical defect where a critical engine component (oil pump) relies on non-durable plastic materials, creating an unreasonable safety risk for drivers and passengers due to potential catastrophic engine failure without prior warning. BMW is aware of this defect as they chose to update the design in future models, switching from the brittle plastic to more metal components in the updated design. This shows clearly that this design is compromised and was a risk to continue implementing.Read more

The vehicle's Telematics Control Box (TCB), located beneath the roof-mounted shark fin antenna, failed due to water intrusion and internal corrosion. The failure produced the following fault codes confirmed by BMW of Norwood, MA: B7F341 (backup battery hardware defective), B7F33C (internal ECU error), and B7F327 (microphone short circuit to ground), along with cascading faults across multiple othe
... r vehicle modules. Symptoms included a persistent 'Emergency Call System Malfunction' warning on the instrument cluster, loss of GPS/navigation accuracy, and loss of odometer display. The shark fin antenna base seal — a foam tape and adhesive system — had likely deteriorated after approximately 6-7 years of service, consistent with a pattern of failures reported by numerous other owners of 2017-2023 BMW X1, X3, X4, X5, X6, X7, M440i, M550i, 330, 340i, and 750i vehicles. BMW dealer quoted $3,300 for repair. An independent BMW specialist quoted $3,500. BMW North America declined to cover the repair as the vehicle is out of warranty, despite acknowledging the issue as known. This failure mode is the subject of active class action litigation (Craft v. BMW of North America LLC, Case No. 1:24-cv-06826, U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey) and an ongoing investigation by Sauder Schelkopf LLC on behalf of affected owners. SAFETY CONCERN: The failure disables the Intelligent Emergency Call system, which automatically contacts emergency services in the event of a serious accident. Additionally, the persistent warning obscures the instrument cluster including the odometer display, impairing normal vehicle operation. Water intrusion reaching vehicle electronics represents a broader safety risk if it propagates to safety-critical modules. ACTION REQUESTED: Formal investigation into the adequacy of the shark fin antenna sealing design across affected model years, and consideration of a recall or extended warranty to cover TCB replacement costs for affected owners.Read more
