1. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The suspected failed component is the front differential carrier bearing on my 2021 BMW 750i xDrive. [XXX] BMW of Westmont, Illinois diagnosed carrier bearing damage and oil leaks and recommended replacement of the front differential. The vehicle has approximately 53,791 miles. The failed differen
... tial/carrier-bearing assembly is currently available for inspection, subject to the vehicle remaining at the dealership and before the component is replaced or discarded. I have specifically requested that BMW and the dealership retain the failed component if inspection or engineering analysis is necessary. The dealership's repair order is XXX, dated XXX. 2. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The vehicle developed a significant grinding noise during acceleration from a stop. The grinding continues for approximately 5–15 seconds, depending on how long the vehicle is under acceleration, and goes away after the vehicle reaches approximately 30–40 MPH. I am concerned that failure of a major front drivetrain component could result in an unexpected loss or interruption of proper power transfer, particularly during acceleration from a stop or at low speeds. The vehicle also has a documented differential oil leak progressing to a drip. I am concerned that continued loss of differential lubricant could contribute to further mechanical damage or failure. I have therefore limited use of the vehicle while seeking diagnosis and determining the appropriate repair. 3. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes. The vehicle was inspected by Laurel BMW of Westmont, Illinois, an authorized BMW service center. The dealer documented the customer's complaint as a grinding noise when accelerating from a stop and documented the diagnosis: “Front differential replacement due to carrier bearing ,oil leaks INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA),Read more

On August 19, 2026, my 2022 BMW X7 xDrive40i experienced multiple safety\-related warnings at approximately 50,411–50,427 miles\. The vehicle first displayed “Increased steering effort” and instructed me to drive carefully to a service center\. It then displayed a red power\-supply warning stating: “Stop carefully\. Do not continue driving\. Continued driving will lead to malfunction of s

After the vehicle was stopped and later restarted, the warnings temporarily cleared\. BMW of Atlantic City performed a KeyReader scan\. The report documented the steering, power\-supply and drivetrain messages and showed fault code 80402F, described as “12 VOLT VEHICLE BATTERY TOTAL DISCHARGE\.” The report showed the battery status as “OK” when it was read\. BMW Service Information Bulletin 61 01 23 discusses fault 80402F on certain G07 X7 vehicles and states that a software error may prevent the vehicle from entering sleep mode, resulting in discharge of the 12\-volt battery\. The precise cause in my vehicle has not yet been conclusively diagnosed\. I am concerned that an electrical or software failure can occur while the vehicle is operating and trigger reduced steering assistance, drivetrain warnings and the announced potential malfunction of other safety\-relevant systems\. On May 28, 2025, my 2023 BMW X7 underwent BMW recall B340224. Repair Order 669956 specifically states: “0077067 REPLACING INTEGRATED BRAKING SYSTEM.” After this recall repair and replacement of the Integrated Braking System, the vehicle began experiencing abnormal and potentially dangerous braking behavior that did not exist before the recall repair. The brake pedal can initially feel unusual
... ly soft or have excessive travel, followed by sudden and aggressive braking. In slow traffic and stop-and-go driving, the brakes can also feel as if they are sticking or not releasing normally, causing the vehicle to jerk when stopping or starting. The problem is significantly worse in hot weather and heavy traffic. After approximately 10 miles of highway driving, the braking behavior may temporarily improve. I have repeatedly reported that these symptoms began after BMW replaced the Integrated Braking System under recall B340224. Despite multiple service visits and substantial repairs, the safety problem remains unresolved. Most importantly, I have repeatedly asked BMW to investigate the Integrated Braking System that was replaced under the recall as the possible source of the problem. BMW has not properly investigated or addressed that component despite the clear timing between the recall repair and the onset of the braking symptoms. Most recently, the vehicle was left with the BMW dealer for approximately one week regarding this continuing safety complaint, but no repair or meaningful inspection of the Integrated Braking System was performed before I retrieved the vehicle. The vehicle and the replaced braking system remain available for inspection. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate whether the Integrated Braking System replacement performed under recall B340224, or the recall remedy itself, may be related to this continuing braking safety defect.Read more

I believe my car is effected by the active bmw recall NHTSA Campaign 23V-707. I have called bmw and gave them my vin number and was rudely rushed off the phone being told my car has no active recalls. I have done a ton of research and the car sounds just like every other car effected by this recall. The car starts and idles fine initially but as soon as it drops to normal idle rpms it makes a loud
... clanking noise and vibrates really bad. When i go into the engine bay i hear the noise coming directly from the vanos area. The car had one code which was 2a7c before the noise. I cleared the code it has not come back but the noise is still there and therefore the vehicle is unsafe to drive. It feels and sounds like if i drive this car on public roads something catastrophic will happen. I believe that my vehicle should be covered under this recall even though they are saying my vin has no outstanding recalls. This is literally the same exact issue for the recall in the first place and it would be amazing if they could help me out.Read more

This happened on my vehicle. Oil pump is supposed to last life of the vehicle per BMW. This left me stranded on the side of the road for hours and now is costing $9k to replace oil pump. My car has less than 100k miles. I'm reporting a safety issue with BMW vehicles equipped with the B58TU engine, primarily 2019-2021 models. These vehicles have an oil pump with an internal plastic component that
... regulates oil pressure, and this part is fracturing in the field, causing sudden loss of oil pressure. The failure typically occurs during cold starts in low temperatures. When it fails, oil pressure becomes erratic or is lost entirely, often with little to no warning before engine damage or vehicle disablement. Warning signs, when present, include inability to measure oil level electronically, abnormal oil pressure, or sudden drivetrain malfunction warnings. These can rapidly progress to engine shutdown or severe damage from oil starvation. This creates a dangerous situation because the vehicle can become disabled without warning while driving or after startup. This is especially hazardous when cars become immobilized in traffic or during winter conditions when failures occur most frequently, leaving occupants exposed to freezing temperatures while awaiting assistance. Pump replacement requires extensive disassembly and commonly costs $6,000-$8,000, assuming no engine damage. A critical concern: owners cannot determine if their vehicle has the original plastic pump or the later metal revision. BMW's VIN-based parts lookup now shows updated components even when original plastic parts remain installed, and BMW has removed the original plastic part number from dealer networks entirely. Failures are reported across multiple production years, and the scope of affected vehicles remains unclear. Because this condition causes sudden vehicle disablement without adequate warning, especially in cold weather, I believe this warrants investigation as a potential safety-related defect.Read more

On August 4, 2026, my vehicle was involved in a direct frontal collision with a brick wall. I was driving with two minor passengers, one seated in the front passenger seat and one seated in the rear passenger seat. The collision resulted in significant front-end damage and a total loss determination by USAA. Despite the frontal impact, none of the vehicle's airbags deployed. Prior to the collisi
... on, I observed no Airbag/SRS warning lights, Check Control warnings, or other indications of a restraint-system malfunction. I respectfully request that NHTSA review this incident for a potential Supplemental Restraint System safety issue involving the airbag control module, front impact sensors, deployment logic, passenger occupancy system, seat-belt pretensioners, or related SRS components. I am specifically requesting review of whether similar airbag non-deployment complaints, manufacturer communications, technical service bulletins, field reports, investigations, or other defect information exist for the 2018 BMW X5 or related F15-generation vehicles. I am a disabled military veteran and experienced injuries and aggravation of pre-existing service-connected disabilities following the collision. Two minor passengers were also involved. The attached complaint contains the complete incident description, vehicle information, insurance claim information, and requested safety investigation. Please confirm receipt of this complaint and advise if any additional documentation would assist NHTSA's review. I can provide accident photographs, insurance records, vehicle inspection information, medical documentation, and other supporting evidence. Because the vehicle has been declared a total loss, preservation of the vehicle and its safety-system data may be time-sensitive. Thank you for reviewing this serious safety concern.Read more

I am reporting a premature oil pump failure on my 2020 BMW M340i xDrive with 42 thousand miles. The vehicle has been well maintained and has not experienced any oil pressure warning lights. However, the electronic engine oil level measurement repeatedly fails to complete once the engine is fully warmed up. I have also received stored BMW fault code 21B2C7 relating to engine oil pressure plausibi
... lity/excessive oil pressure. The fault currently shows as inactive, but it was not present previously. I have monitored engine oil pressure using diagnostic software. Pressure is generally around 38–42 psi at hot idle, approximately 44–48 psi during cruising, and can rise into the 60–78 psi range during acceleration. Although these readings are generally stable, the combination of the stored pressure plausibility fault and repeated inability to measure the engine oil level is concerning. I have also noticed a whining/humming noise from the front of the engine at low RPM, particularly during stop-and-go driving and while decelerating in first and second gear. There are numerous owner reports involving premature oil pump failures on BMW vehicles equipped with this generation of the B58 engine. The original oil pump used on earlier vehicles reportedly contains plastic internal components that can deteriorate over time and heat exposure. BMW later revised the oil pump design. BMW Korea has also reportedly begun providing repairs for certain B58 oil pump failures outside the normal warranty period while the issue is being investigated in that market. An engine oil pump is a critical lubrication component and is not a normal maintenance or wear item. Failure of the pump could result in insufficient or excessive oil pressure, loss of lubrication, severe engine damage, engine seizure, or loss of power while driving. I am submitting this complaint so NHTSA is aware of the potential pattern of premature oil pump failures affecting 2020 BMW M340i vehicles andRead more

My 2022 BMW X5 is having the transfer case star to fail. Where the symptoms currently are at is the car has a shudder in certain situations. I can feel it when maneuvering at slow speeds and I can feel it at times at speed or when on a steep hill. I bought the extended warranty for the car and the maintenance package for the vehicle. I'm at 68k miles and the shudder started before that but I
... am still covered under extended warranty. I have had all maintenance done on the vehicle at the local BMW dealership including all tire needs and have always replaced tires as necessary and number of tires at a time they suggest. When I took it in as the vehicle is reporting needing brakes 2 weeks ago, I mentioned the shudder and asked about tire tread on the 2 front tires. They came back with that the tires were fine in spec with the back 2 but that shudder is the transfer case. The dealer also then mentioned a couple things: - They now recommend changing the fluid in the transfer case by 60k miles due to amount of failures they are seeing (my X5 was in the dealership multiple times before an after 60k and it was never recommended). - that since it is not in the recommended maintenance for the xdrive4.0i that the car would not alert to have it changed and therefore BMW would not cover changing the fluid under the UltimateCare (service maintenance plan they sold me). That the transfer case was meant to be a for life fluid. - I asked what happens next if the fluid is not changed, that it will continue to degrade and once it fully gives out the vehicle will become inoperable - I asked does the fluid change save the transfercase and they said it seems to help many vehicles and the shudder disappears but for some it does not. - I then asked would the BMW Extended Warranty purchased cover it if it fully failed or the fluid change did not solve the shudder and I was told maybe fully, partially or not at all. Ext Warranty brochure says it is covered at platinum level I havRead more

I am filing an official safety recall non-compliance and documentation fraud complaint against the franchise dealership, BMW of [XXX], regarding their handling of active safety campaigns B110724 (Electric Water Pump) and B120921 (DME Control Unit).Following a severe engine overheating failure related to the water pump recall, both BMW Roadside and the dealership denied my request for a safety tow,
... forcing me to pay out-of-pocket for a private flatbed. Upon arrival, the dealership held my vehicle for over a week, explicitly withholding the mandatory safety campaign remedies to leverage an aggressive $4,517.18 retail repair quote for secondary turbo coolant lines. My service advisor explicitly left a voicemail stating: "That is why we were waiting to see if you were going to have the work performed before finishing up that 2nd recall."Furthermore, the dealership committed administrative fraud regarding federal disclosure rules. On my final paperwork under Repair Order #XXX, the dealership checked Box #4 on the 'Vehicle Recall Status Disclosure' page, falsely certifying under penalty that the vehicle was 'Not Subject to an Open Safety Recall'—directly contradicting the active campaigns documented on the preceding page. They attempted to coerce my signature on this false document to strip my consumer rights and cover up a blatant safety campaign violation. Due to this hostile environment and fraud, I refused to sign the false disclosure and privately towed my vehicle away to an independent facility. I have full digital and physical PDF copies of the fraudulent paperwork. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)Read more

My 2026 BMW X5 xDrive50e experienced a serious freeway safety event involving loss of braking/brake power, loss of vehicle power/functionality, and multiple vehicle warnings/errors. The incident occurred while I was driving on the freeway and substantially affected my ability to safely operate the vehicle. BMW Emergency Services subsequently towed the vehicle to Irvine BMW on 07/09/2026. Irvine B
... MW later attributed the event to Emergency Stop Assist (ESA) and the Driver Monitoring System (DMS), rather than identifying a mechanical brake failure. Its written explanation states that ESA can take over vehicle guidance and decelerate the vehicle using multiple short braking jolts. The dealership reported a stored DMS fault but stated that it could not duplicate my reported condition. I have not been provided evidence that the original freeway event was reproduced or that its cause was conclusively established. Irvine BMW initially represented that material covering the display was an aftermarket screen protector and stated that BMW Technical required its removal because it could interfere with the DMS camera. On 07/27/2026, the General Manager apologized and confirmed that the material was actually original BMW transportation protection film. The dealership also proposed reducing ESA sensitivity as an alternative. I remain concerned that the combination of loss of braking/brake power, loss of vehicle power/functionality, and the reported ESA/DMS behavior may represent a serious safety defect or malfunction affecting braking, vehicle control, or driver-monitoring systems. I kindly request that NHTSA review this reported safety event, including ESA, DMS, related vehicle-control systems, and the interaction with the display/driver-monitoring system, and determine whether further investigation is warranted. I can provide dealership records, BMW App data, communications, and diagnostic documents.Read more

On [XXX], my 2026 BMW X5 (VIN [XXX], 22,314 mi) was damaged during an automated reverse parking maneuver by BMW Parking Assistant, with automatic emergency braking enabled. Three failures occurred. I have used Parking Assistant nightly for ~6 months to back into my home garage: ~180 identical maneuvers, zero prior incidents or warnings. Nothing about the garage or environment changed. Failure 1:
... The system calculated and executed a trajectory that steered the vehicle into the garage structure. First contact was at the driver side rear fender flare. Failure 2: No graduated proximity warnings sounded during the approach. The first and only sensor alert occurred simultaneously with impact. The alert at contact proves the sensors were functional, yet no advance warning was given. Failure 3: After contact was detected and the alert sounded, the vehicle kept moving. Automatic braking did not stop it. The scrape traveled forward along the entire driver side door and sheared off the driver side mirror before the vehicle stopped. At parking speed, stopping distance is inches; the continuous scrape from fender flare to mirror is physical evidence of sustained post-contact travel. The system requested driver intervention only after impact. I was actively supervising. The window from failure onset to impact was under one second, below human reaction time. No supervising driver could have intervened. Damage: driver side rear fender flare, door, and mirror. No injuries. No software changes have been made since the incident. A formal case and engineering investigation have been requested from BMW of North America, including written preservation of EDR, parking maneuver logs, sensor data, brake commands, and telematics. Servicing dealer: Crevier BMW, Santa Ana, CA. I believe this indicates a software defect in path planning, sensor logic, or post-contact braking that may affect other vehicles.
