Driving on highway using assisted driving pro (hands off steering wheel and feet off pedals). Speed set for 65 or 67. Driver's phone call came up on display screen. Passenger answered and hung up on screen. Driver did not touch wheel. Car started accelerating. Reached 93 mph before realized what was happening and able to apply brakes. Short time later tried to reengage speed and verbally requested
... increase to 65 or 67. Car set cruise control to 110. Both passengers heard 65 or 67, definitely not 110. Applied brake and didn't use any driver assistance controls for remainder of trip. Nice weather, no glare, light traffic. Software update was installed the day before. BMW dealership found no problem. National BMW consumer line suggested setting speed manually with buttons on steering wheel instead of verbally.Read more

Last year around this time my differential failed and I lost all power to my wheels when driving in traffic in [XXX] on my way back to [XXX]. The car was driving and a loud clunk sound came from the car and the transmission wouldn't drive and I had to coast off the road cutting off cars to make it to a parking lot. I thought this was just something that happened to my car that maybe I did but then
... I saw the recall going on for the BMW differentials and realized It wasn't just a one off thing that happened to me. The vehicle was towed to a shop by AAA insurance and was looked at and confirmed to be the differental and driveshaft. I already had the problem looked at and fixed and I have documentation of everything. The only warning signs I noticed before it happened was a clunking noise and feeling like the wheels had a problem with putting power down to the road and I heard it and felt it and it got worse before it broke but I didnt realize what it was until I was actually stuck in [XXX] after it broke. My vehicle isn't included in the official recall but I would like help to get it added because I belive I suffered the same problem and am hoping for reimbursement for the money I spent on the repairs of a defective part that my car came with. I had to leave my car at AAA repair shop to be looked at and get a rental to come back home so I could make it to work in 2 days and eneded up missing work the next day. My next day off I had to rent a towing dolly from [XXX] and drive back there to pick my vehicle up and tow it back home to [XXX]. The High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) on my vehicle has experienced a catastrophic premature failure for the second time, presenting a severe and immediate safety hazard. This vehicle was previously serviced under NHTSA Recall 21V-586 in 2022 at 66,165 miles, during which the original defective fuel pump was replaced by an authorized BMW dealership. At approximately 123,000 miles, the replacement pu
... mp failed while the vehicle was in operation. When these high-pressure fuel pumps fail, they cause sudden engine stalling, a complete loss of propulsion while driving, and a loss of power-assist for steering and braking. This creates an immediate risk of a high-speed collision on public roadways, especially during highway transit. Furthermore, failure of this component can lead to internal mechanical destruction, creating a potential fuel leak or fire hazard. Because a replacement part mandated by a federal safety recall has failed in the exact same manner after limited mileage, the remedy provided under Recall 21V-586 is demonstrably inadequate to permanently resolve this safety hazard. BMW is currently refusing to cover the repair because the vehicle is just past the 120,000-mile extended warranty limit, leaving a known, recurring safety defect unaddressed. I am filing this complaint to urge NHTSA to investigate the failure rates of BMW's replacement recall pumps, as the current remedy does not guarantee long-term vehicle safety.Read more

I am getting error code 21A50A and 216115 which Starter Overheating that can cause fire. Similar error code were coming on other cars and BMW have recalled it the recall number is 26V056. I ask BMW and NHTSA to include 330E in this recall as 330E is similar to 330I. 330I and 330E uses same parts and similar design and excluding the 330E from this recall doesn't make sense.

COMPONENT: Engine mounts (left and right hydraulic engine mounts). Both are still installed on the vehicle and are available for inspection on request. FAILURE DESCRIPTION: I began hearing a knocking noise from the engine bay whenever I accelerated. I first noticed it on approximately August 19, 2026. The noise occurred under acceleration only and was not present at idle. There were no warning la
... mps, dashboard messages, or check engine indicators at any point before or after the noise began, and none are present now. The knocking noise was the only symptom. CONFIRMED BY DEALER: Yes. I brought the vehicle to Long Beach BMW Service Center on August 29, 2026 at 31,990 miles. The technician inspected the vehicle and found that the left engine mount had collapsed and was leaking hydraulic fluid, and that the right engine mount was deteriorating toward the same condition. The finding is documented on repair order 952722, which I can provide. OTHER INSPECTIONS: The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives. I have contacted BMW of North America Customer Relations regarding the failure. SAFETY CONCERN: A collapsed engine mount allows excessive engine and drivetrain movement under acceleration and load. This transmits shock into surrounding components and can lead to damage of adjacent lines, wiring, and exhaust components over time. The condition also produces unpredictable drivetrain movement during acceleration, which affects vehicle stability and driver control. ADDITIONAL CONTEXT: The vehicle was purchased new in October 2021 and has 31,000 miles. It has never been in an accident, has never been modified or tuned, and has been driven lightly and conservatively. A hydraulic engine mount failing at this mileage under these conditions is not consistent with normal wear. Both mounts failed or began failing simultaneously.Read more

I own a 2023 BMW 330i xDrive. The factory passenger-side/right-front inner LED daytime running light has failed while the other headlight functions continue to operate normally. The vehicle has not been involved in a collision, the headlight has not been physically damaged, and no aftermarket DRL or headlight components have been installed. The affected factory BMW/HELLA right-front headlamp is B
... MW part number 63 11 7 886 944 (63117886944), with HELLA number 7886664-03 and HELLA assembly number 1EX 016.437-46. I was advised that correcting the failed integrated DRL may require replacement of the complete headlight assembly rather than replacement of a simple bulb or inexpensive serviceable lighting component. This makes the repair extremely expensive. Even used OEM assemblies can cost close to $2500+, while a new OEM headlight, labor, programming/coding, and related components can make the total repair cost substantially higher. I am concerned that an integrated LED daytime running light is failing prematurely and potentially forcing owners to replace an entire expensive headlight assembly because one DRL element has stopped functioning. I have also seen reports from other BMW owners experiencing similar DRL and LED headlight failures. BMW has previously issued technical service information involving LED daytime running light/headlight failures on BMW vehicles where the affected headlamp and LED module required replacement. Because this is an exterior lighting component intended to improve vehicle visibility and because the failure can result in a very costly headlight replacement, I believe this issue should be reviewed as a potential recurring defect. I am requesting that NHTSA compare this complaint with other exterior-lighting, headlight, and daytime-running-light complaints involving 2023–2024 BMW 3 Series/G20 vehicles and determine whether there is a pattern of premature DRL failure that warrants a defect investigation or safety recall.Read more

On 8/31/2026 this 2020 BMW X4 was serviced at an authorized dealer (BMW of Tyler) to execute the remedy for official NHTSA Safety Recall Campaign 25V-636 (Engine Starter Relay Fire Risk). INCIDENT DESCRIPTION: Within minutes of picking up the vehicle post-repair and entering an active roadway, the vehicle suffered an immediate, un-warned, total loss of all electrical power. The engine stalled, all
... digital dashboard instrumentation went black, and power steering/braking assistance were compromised. The vehicle came to a complete stop in moving traffic. The total power failure prevented the activation of hazard lights, rendering the blacked-out vehicle invisible to surrounding traffic and nearly causing a high-speed rear-end collision. The vehicle was towed back to the dealer center. TECHNICAL BASIS FOR DEFECT/WORKMANSHIP FAILURE: Campaign 25V-636 requires replacing or manipulating vulnerable electrical relay and starter assembly points tied directly to the main 12V electrical infrastructure and power distribution system. A total, sudden in-motion electrical blackout strongly indicates an open-circuit failure, improper terminal torque specifications, or damage to the adjacent Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS) network occurring during the recall execution. The dealer is attempting to claim a coincidental "faulty battery" caused the in-motion shutdown to avoid workmanship liability. However, a battery failure does not completely choke out a running engine already under alternator load unless an open circuit or severe grounding fault is actively introduced. This incident represents a catastrophic failure directly following the execution of an official federal safety recall remedy.Read more

My 2023 BMW M2 6-speed manual suffered a catastrophic clutch/transmission/drivetrain failure at approximately 16,000 miles. The vehicle is stock and was still under BMW warranty/CPO coverage. I purchased the vehicle at approximately 6,000 miles and I am the third owner. The incident occurred in [XXX] on [XXX], on the [XXX] side/westbound area. While driving, the clutch/pressure plate assembly fai
... led and caused major damage to the surrounding drivetrain components, including the transmission/bellhousing area, clutch/flywheel components, wiring/starter area, and related hardware. The vehicle became inoperable and could have created a serious safety risk if it happened in traffic or at highway speed. [XXX] BMW inspected the vehicle and confirmed extensive drivetrain damage. BMW/[XXX] BMW denied warranty coverage and blamed driver misuse. However, BMW has not provided the vehicle computer/EDR data, over-rev data, diagnostic data, clutch temperature data, or other technical proof showing misuse, abuse, burnout, over-rev, or abnormal driving. The repair estimate was approximately $19,555.19. BMW also required approximately $1,770.76 before releasing the vehicle. The damaged transmission, clutch, flywheel, and related parts were returned to me and are preserved and available for inspection. This was not a normal worn clutch issue. This was a catastrophic drivetrain failure at very low mileage that destroyed major surrounding components. I am requesting that NHTSA record this as a potential premature clutch/transmission/drivetrain defect on the 2023 BMW M2 manual transmission platform. COMPONENT / FAULT CATEGORY: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM / POWER TRAIN / BLIND SPOT WARNING SUMMARY OF THE DEFECT: On April 11, 2026, my 2019 BMW X5 suffered a sudden electronic system shutdown at highway speeds near the 210 exit, stranding the car on the roadway and requiring AAA towing. BMW of Ontario falsely blamed "liquid damage" in the GSW shifter and texted an inflated quote of $6,616.05, later reduce

The GSW module near cup holders suffers from an unsealed design defect where ambient condensation causes total drive power loss. DETAILED INCIDENT NARRATIVE: The center console in the BMW X5 (G05) lacks basic liquid/moisture isolation. Condensation or ambient humidity short-circuits critical shifting electronics, causing immediate loss of drive power on public roadways and creating an extreme crash risk. This incident is part of a clear pattern of systemic electrical vulnerabilities on this specific vehicle: 1. STARTER SAFETY RECALL & HIGHWAY SHUTDOWN: Last year, this vehicle suffered a sudden highway shutdown caused by a faulty starter. BMW failed to send a recall notice beforehand. After I was forced to pay out-of-pocket for emergency repairs at Coast BMW, BMW later recognized the recall and issued a full reimbursement this year. 2. BLIND SPOT WARNING SYSTEM FAILURE: The vehicle also suffered an unexplained, premature failure of the Blind Spot Warning system (quoted at over $3,000 to repair and left unaddressed), proving broader electronic/sensor vulnerabilities. Furthermore, dealership handling involved deceptive, erratic quotes ($6,616.05 texted initially vs. $3,616.05 on the invoice) to shift financial liability for a latent design defect onto the consumer.Read more

Oil pump for the 2020 model is made with plastic internals. The passage that controls the flow of oil into your engine is made of plastic. The car didn’t even have 40,000 miles and the plastic broke causing the passage to be in a very close to shut position not allowing enough oil to enter the engine in higher rpm. The mechanic told me this is the biggest thing he is starting to see and he works
... for BMW Service center of Mamaroneck. He’s seen over 150+ B58TU (engine model) of the year 2020 with broken plastic in the oil pump. For the 2021 model year and up to 2026 they have updated the oil pump to metal internals and metal passageways solving the issue but are not helping us 2020 owners and aren’t taking any responsibility blaming it on owners. The repair cost over 3,000 dollars. I understand if it’s something they can’t figure out but they saw it was their own negligence on using better parts and they switch from plastic to metal oil pumps after they saw an increase of over 2,000+ 2020 bmws with the b58tu in it have this issue. There were no warnings, no lights on the dash, no check engine and no codes on the car or when read with a diagnostic scanner. I even included the difference between the 2020 oil pump (plastic) to the 2021 and up oil pump (metal) which was bought from BMW Parts in Mamaroneck. This is an oem part that they updated on their newer cars and won’t take responsibility for their negligence on their 2020 model.Read more

On XXX, while stopped at a traffic light, I accelerated normally in my 2022 BMW 540i. After moving only a few feet, I heard a loud metallic clank from the rear of the vehicle. The vehicle immediately lost all ability to propel itself. It would still shift between gears, but pressing the accelerator would not move the vehicle. A drivetrain warning appeared after the failure. There were no meaningfu
... l warning symptoms beforehand. The vehicle was towed to an authorized BMW dealer (Paul Miller BMW in [XXX]), where the rear differential/driveline was identified as the apparent failed component. The vehicle remains completely inoperable and is available for inspection. NHTSA identifies this vehicle as subject to Recall 26V525. The recall concerns excessive wear at the connection between the driveshaft and rear differential and warns that the defect can result in loss of power to the rear wheels and possible vehicle rollaway. The failure I experienced appears consistent with the condition described in that recall. The recall is currently listed as “Recall Incomplete, remedy not yet available.” I contacted BMW North America and the servicing BMW dealer because the vehicle has already experienced the apparent recalled failure and cannot be driven. The dealer advised me that BMW became involved but, because the recall is presently “unclear,” BMW would not provide documentation confirming whether the failed rear differential is covered. I was further advised that the only current option is to pay for the repair and seek reimbursement once the recall remedy becomes available. This leaves me with an immobilized vehicle subject to an active federal safety recall involving the same driveline components that failed, but with no current remedy or definitive coverage determination. My third-party service-contract administrator is also declining to authorize the repair because BMW has announced responsibility for the recall condition. I own a 2010 BMW R1200RT motorcycle. The motorcycle was subject to BMW’s fuel-pump recall, and the recall repair was performed in 2014. The motorcycle has now developed a crack in the fuel-pump flange at the base of the female quick-disconnect fuel fitting. The crack is allowing gasoline to leak under pressure. The motorcycle has the metal reinforcement ring associated with the previous recall
... repair. This failure is particularly concerning because the fuel-pump flange and quick-disconnect area were the subject of BMW’s previous safety recall involving cracking and fuel leakage. I understand that my motorcycle may not currently be listed as subject to BMW’s later 20V-471 recall because of the repair performed in 2014. However, I am reporting this as a new safety defect because the fuel-pump/flange assembly has now failed again and is leaking gasoline. I am concerned that a previously recalled and repaired fuel-system component has developed another crack in the same critical area, creating a potential fire hazard. I have photographs documenting the crack, the metal reinforcement ring, and the component markings. I can provide the photographs and the 2014 repair documentation. I request that NHTSA document this complaint and review whether this represents a continuing or recurring safety defect involving the BMW R1200RT fuel-pump flange and quick-disconnect fitting.Read more

I was driving my 2025 BMW X5 sDrive40i at approximately 60 mph when the vehicle in front of me stopped abruptly. I immediately applied the brake pedal firmly in an attempt to make an emergency stop. Despite applying heavy and continuous pressure to the brake pedal, the braking force felt unusually weak. The vehicle slowed gradually but continued rolling forward much farther than I expected and di
... d not stop before I made low-speed contact with the rear of the vehicle in front of me. The vehicle did not skid, I did not feel the tires sliding, and I did not observe skid marks. My concern is that the vehicle did not provide the amount of braking force I expected despite firm emergency braking. Because BMW X5 vehicles have been subject to recalls involving the Integrated Brake system, ABS, DSC, and potentially increased stopping distance, I am reporting this incident as a possible safety-related braking defect.Read more

Component: Engine Cooling System: Turbocharger Coolant Return Line/Fitting (Part # 11538854735). Defect Summary: The factory turbocharger coolant return line on the B48 engine uses a plastic quick-disconnect fitting and O-ring mechanism positioned directly under the turbo. Extreme thermal cycling causes this plastic to degrade, become brittle, and fail or separate without warning, resulting in imm
... ediate, catastrophic drainage of pressurized engine coolant. Failure of Manufacturer Requirements: This component fails basic durability, material safety, and engineering standards for pressurized cooling systems. The design is so fundamentally flawed that authorized factory-trained technicians cannot permanently remedy it using OEM parts; the connection mechanism fails to maintain a pressurized seal under standard operational heat. Freeway Safety Incident: While traveling at high speeds in high-velocity freeway traffic, the fitting failed catastrophically without warning. The sudden coolant loss forced an immediate engine stall/power failure in active lanes. Navigating the powerless vehicle out of the middle of the freeway while surrounding traffic swerved nearly caused a severe, high-speed multi-vehicle collision. Inadequate Remedy & Recurrence: The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership (BMW of the Woodlands, TX) for repair. However, within one week of dealership service, the new OEM line/O-ring completely disconnected again. This recurring separation completely drains the coolant within days, causing subsequent engine stalls, rendering the car undrivable, and repeatedly placing occupants in extreme danger. Thermal & Fire Hazard: Each failure sprays pressurized coolant onto a hot turbocharger and exhaust manifold, creating immediate risks of blinding smoke, vision obscuration, and engine bay ignition, compounded by thermal risks to the 330e hybrid powertrain battery electronics.Read more

I am reporting a safety concern involving BMW vehicles with the B58TU engine, model years 2019-2021. These engines use a variable-displacement oil pump with an internal thermoplastic adjusting ring that regulates oil pressure. Field failures are being reported in which this component fractures, causing sudden loss or instability of oil pressure. Owners and independent shops report catastrophic en
... gine damage within minutes, with little or no advance warning. A sudden loss of motive power at highway speed, or an engine seizure in traffic, creates a crash risk. I have not experienced a failure. I am reporting because: 1. My vehicle falls within the affected production range. 2. Owners cannot determine whether their vehicle has the original thermoplastic pump or the later metal revision. BMW issued the revised part without changing the part number, and VIN-based parts lookups reportedly return the updated component even when the original is still installed. This deprives owners of any means of assessing their own risk. 3. BMW quietly revised the design to all-metal, indicating the manufacturer identified a durability problem, yet no recall or customer notification has been issued in the United States. 4. Out-of-warranty repair requires removal of the front subframe and eight or more hours of labor. Owners report quotes near $6,000. 5. In South Korea, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport opened a formal investigation into this same defect in XXX. BMW Korea then confirmed it is performing this repair free of charge regardless of warranty status. A foreign regulator has already found this serious enough to investigate. I request that NHTSA investigate the B58TU oil pump, determine the failure rate, and evaluate whether a safety recall is warranted. At minimum, owners should be given a reliable method of identifying which pump revision is installed in their vehicle.Read more

While the daytime running lights are on (this vehicle has front and rear daytime running lights, so when the DRL’s are on, the taillights are illuminated as well as the front daytime running lights). When the DRL’s are on, and you use a turn signal, the rear turn signals are almost invisible to the naked eye during the day time. Reason being, the DRL’s are on, so the rear tail lights are sli
... ghtly illuminated. This vehicle also has a pulsating (fade on/off) turn signals in the front and rear. It’s not a sharp on/off like a typical LED. So when using the turn signal, the rear turn signals (which also act as the taillight and brake light) are very very dim and hard to see as compared to when the DRL’s are off. The photo I will provide shows the left turn signal at its brightest point, the one on top with the daytime running lights off, are very bright and visible, whereas the bottom photo (which shows the rear daytime running taillights on) also shows the left turn signal at its brightest point, and is almost indistinguishable as to whether the turn signal is flashing. Again, both have the left turn signal on at its brightest point. This is very unsafe, and applies to all 2024-2026 BMW X5’s. J would like this rectified.Read more

My 2025 BMW X4 xDrive30i is subject to NHTSA recall 26V438, reported 07/08/2026, covering an engine starter that can wear prematurely and, in an extreme case, overheat and cause a fire. My BMW account shows the status as Remedy Not Available. NHTSA's VIN lookup confirms the recall is incomplete with no remedy available. I am filing because there is no remedy for me to obtain. BMW has not released
... parts or a repair procedure. Owner letters were not scheduled to mail until 08/28/2026. I emailed my BMW service center requesting a parts availability estimate and received no response. I have not had a starter failure or thermal event. The safety concern is that I must keep driving and parking a vehicle with an acknowledged fire risk, indefinitely, with no repair available and no timeline for one. I also cannot get confirmation from BMW whether any park outside or do not drive advisory applies to my vehicle. Coverage of this campaign has been inconsistent, with some outlets describing a plug-in hybrid population affected by corrosion that carried park outside guidance. My vehicle is not a plug-in hybrid. I am concerned about the scale and repetition of this defect. This is the third BMW starter campaign in roughly twelve months, following an autumn 2025 action and a February 2026 campaign, with the affected population expanding each time. Recall 26V438 alone covers 318,495 US vehicles. Given that volume I expect parts to be rationed and my repair delayed well beyond a reasonable time. Separately, BMW Financial Services has declined to process a lease payoff quote, citing the open recall. The effect is that BMW is restricting my contractual rights over a defect only BMW can cure and cannot currently cure. The vehicle is available for inspection on request. No warning lamps or symptoms to date.Read more
