On September 7, 2021, the tailgate of my 2019 BMW X3 opened on its own in my garage. The car had been turned off for approximately 20-25 minutes. My key was inside the house, nowhere near the garage. No one had touched the car after it was turned off. My husband was in the garage, standing approximately 6-10 feet away from the car when the tailgate opened on its own. I believe this is both a Safe
... ty and Security issue. The tailgate opened on its own. This could have occurred while driving on a highway (safety), or while parked on a public street (security).street. On 9/9/21 I reported the problem to Zach Santillo in the Service Dept of our dealer: BMW-Newton, NJ.Read more

In Buford GA at the corner of Elm Tree Terrace and Buford Dam road, I was waiting for the light to turn on a decline. It is important to note that the car was driving in all-electric mode on a full charge. Once the light turned green I stepped on the accelerator to go and the car stalled. I believe the transmission slipped. The gears caught at high torque and jolted the car involuntarily forward.
... I didn't notice it at first but after a couple of sleepless nights with shoulder pain: I got an MRI and was found to have a torn rotator cuff. It is difficult to associate the injury as it is hard to access the force applied to the jolt. The only word I can use to describe the force of the jolt was violent. I believe there is a safety issue when a high torque electric motor is being run through a slipping or failing transmission and I suspect as a result I have suffered a injury as a result.Read more

Error msg indicating “secure vehicle against rolling” appeared. Also, “Transmission: Secure vehicle with parking brake when stopped. Since tires installed on 9/2021, I have been having a worsening vibration noise. I took it to the installer who checked the balance of the wheels and tires and said there were no issues. The vibration continued. I took the car to an independent mechanic who inspected the vehicle. He said it's either the wheel bearings or the tires. The wheel bearings were replaced and I continued to have issues. T

Engine stalled at low speed. Was able to restart engine. Check engine light was on so was able to drive it to dealer. Dealer determined it was hpfp failure, with metal shards in fuel line, so entire fuel system replaced (injectors, lines, hpfp, etc). Hpfp was replaced with the same model that failed, just a new one. A while later, engine stalled again at low speed. No check engine light but was ab
... le to restart engine. Dealer notified of stall post-fix of entire fuel system. A while later engine stalled a 3rd time while driving around 40 mph. No check engine light Was advised that there was a recall for a newly designed hpfp but not in stock at dealer yet. Eventually had the newly redesigned hpfp installed under recall. A few weeks later, experienced another stall while idling at a red light. Amazingly was able to get a real-time video of the engine stalling and shutting off. No check engine light. Was unable to restart engine after multiple tries but engine finally fired up on the 5th or 6th or 7th attempt at restarting. Was able to pull over to the side of the road and notified dealer that I experienced another engine stall after installation of the newly designed recalled hp fuel pump.. Took the car into the dealer and showed them the real Time video of my engine stalling and dealer sent diagnostics to BMW North America but Was advised that BMW engineers were unable to replicate or to find the problem that caused the engine stall. Full credit to local BMW dealer that has always tried their best to help me find and fix the problem but the engine stalling randomly is a life or death kind of malfunction. After 4 engine stalls including after a replacement of a recalled brand new design part, I'm hoping BMW North America can work with me towards a solution and not have to wait till a catastrophic accident before a remedy is offered.Read more
Incident date: Dec 11, 2021
The positive battery terminal connection on the thickest cable in the trunk of the car (this wire leads from the battery in the trunk to the fuse box behind the glove box of the car) was loose due to either natural loosening over time (i.e. loss of torque on the fastener) or improperly applied torque by various BMW service shops (battery was changed by independent BMW service shop in 2018 and chec
... ked by BMW dealership in 2019 to be in good health). The loose connection at the battery terminal on this wire caused the car to suddenly turn off while driving on the road. Once turned off, there was zero electrical response from the car (e.g. engine turned off, no headlights, no hazard lights, no power steering, no capability to restart the car, airbags likely would not deploy if car crashed, etc.). The car could only be controlled by coasting on its remaining inertia, slowed down using residual braking power (which disappears after applying the breaks 2-5 times due to loss of hydraulic pressure), and forcefully steering the car (since there’s no power steering). This is an INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS situation that could cause loss of life due to complete loss of control of car. Both the battery and alternator were in good health. Only the battery terminal connection was loose, leading to a single point failure of the ENTIRE electrical system of the car and the car itself. There is NO redundancy in the electrical system; even if the alternator is running fine, the loose battery connection will kill the car. Furthermore, once car is stopped and safely secured, it is EXTREMELY DIFFICULT to open the trunk to access the battery as there is no way to access the trunk manually via key. I had to apply a 12V source to the large red wire at the fuse box to power on the car, enabling me to open the trunk. This requires removing cupholders, glove box, various trim panels, etc. to access the fuse box. Absolutely terrible design.Read more

My vehicle was part of a recall No. 21V-586. I was told I have metal shavings in the fuel system coming from the high pressure fuel pump and given a price to repair of $17,200.00. I first looked on line and found my make, model and year was part of a recall for this exact same issue I informed the dealership of the recall. The contacted BMW and they stated they would not cover the repairs because
... now they are saying it was bad fuel. I stated if bad fuel then we treat it and nothing should be wrong with the pump. This went on for a couple week then I requested a BMW come to the dealership to inspect. After this visit it was agreed they would replace the high pressure fuel pump and nothing else. After fighting them and telling them if the metal shavings in the system is from a recalled part then why are they not correcting the entire issue. I then received an email later with repairs listed and it show hoses and filters and new fuel and no charge. I assumed they replace the entire fuel system to get rid of the metal shavings. I went pick up the vehicle and was told that there are still metal shavings in the system to be careful as the vehicle may shut off without warning. I asked how BMW could give a car back that they did not fix the problem and may cause a crash. They had no answer. I now have a car that I really can't drive and has no value. I have had to purchase another car thus incurred additional and unwanted expense due to BMW's refusal to correct a manufacturer's defect. Why is it my responsibility to pay to have the metal shavings from their recalled fuel pump removed from the fuel system. If they can't fix the problem then I should be reimbursed for the car's value by BMW and not have it available to be on the road and cause an unnecessary accident. I am asking for your help in dealing with BMW to rectify this matter as they are unwilling to deal with me. Occasionally it is impossible to unlock the door from the inside with the manual door unlock. The door operates in a two-step manner - pull the door latch once to unlock the door, and then pull again to open the door. However, sometimes the first pull fails to unlock the door and the only way to unlock the vehicle is with the electric door unlock. When this occurs, there is notable tension in t
... he door handle, and the pop-up unlock indicator does move upwards in synch with the door handle position - it's simply not reaching the unlock point, and there is resistance felt in the door latch. Even trying to assist the mechanism by grasping the unlock indicator (as doors used to be unlocked in this fashion) does not work. Obviously, if the electric system fails for any reason, not being able to open the door is a major safety issue. When this happens it is also observed that the electric lock operates very slowly. Instead of the post popping up and unlocking almost immediately, it takes a second or two for the door to unlock, as if there is additional internal resistance in the mechanism. This is observed on BOTH the driver and passenger side doors. I have brought this to the attention of the dealer on separate occasions. The suggestion has been to replace a cable in the door due to stretch. However, based on the nature of the issue and the symptoms in both doors it seems like an issue with the latch or locking mechanism itself. The passenger door is unlocked very infrequently compared to the driver's door and it seem unlikely they would wear at the same rate if it was a cable stretch issue. I have been able to record a video of this problem occurring. I plan to show it to the dealer at my next service in the next couple weeks since they were unable to replicate the issue.Read more
