I purchased my 2014 BMW i3 from Canada in 2019. It was imported from the U.S and still is registered in the U.S. I brought it into the BMW dealership in Vancouver BC shortly after to do a vehicle inspection. At that time, the dealer printed out a list of defect codes/recalls. It also said that they were done and marked "yes" completed. Fast forward to 2022, I bring my car into the same dealer and
... they said there is a recall not completed to replace the convenience charging electronics KLE and that they would fix for free. My car was not starting and we thought it could have caused the issue. They also noted at that time that the engine mount screws are now split and need to be replaced. I then discovered it was part of an open recall but when I asked about this, they said the recall closed in 2016 and I would now be responsible to replace this part for $3400+ even though it was a known defective BMW part. Upon further research, the initial part replaced was deemed not good enough and the part was upgraded to aluminum (it is currently a plastic mount bracket). I have tried requesting again for them to complete the recall work but they said they told me: " Yes, there was a recall but it was completed in 2016 in san fran by the looks of it. (<--I don't think it was actually completed) "I can't claim it since its done unfortunately... there is no way for me to claim this to you either as the repairs done more than 2 years ago and the car is out of warrant for 4 years. So BMW will just see it as just wear and tear. I tried to see of any ways I could assist you but there isn't a way for me to claim this with BMW" So my issue, and why I am writing you is that they claim the part has been completed but it has not, it is still the original bracket and screw mount. Plus they admitted they still needed to replace the charging electronics when this was apparently also marked as completed. I suspect someone lied about the recall work being done in San Francisco.Read more

An Error / Warning Message occurs which states "Secure Vehicle Against Rolling" when the ignition is first activated. There is no obvious failure in parking or while driving. Only the Message which indicates that the vehicle should be service. This issue shows up rather frequently online and appears to be due to a broken spring in the gear box exchange. There is an extensive video as to how to rep
... lace the broken spring though it is rather difficult to access the spring itself, the cost of the spring is ~$5.00 USD. The Dealer Service Rep appears to have no knowledge of this issue - though his effort to offer a solution was to just bring the car in for service. Again, it was not difficult to find this issue online which appears to occur rather frequently as I can tell. Several comments have indicated that no performance issue was noted, and due to the high cost of repair (Labor Cost through BMW), no action was typically taken to resolve the issue. Please check to see if a formal recall is required to fix what appears to be a poor quality / design issue with a simple spring.Read more

On May 2, 2022, the car began to power down involuntarily every time I applied the brakes. This happened 2-3 times, and I was able to restart. The tow service took it to Sport Motoring, where they performed a diagnosis o
... n May 3, 2022. The diagnosis shows 8 faults in the EME module, among other things. I located a recall (Recall #19V310000) for the 2018 i3 which details the exact issue of the car powering down on its own due to a faulty EME module. Sport Motoring called BMW Customer Service on May 3, 2022, and asked if the car might need to have this recall applied. They agreed that the symptoms did seem similar and said they would need to have a diagnosis from a dealer. Based on the call with BMW customer service, I had the car towed to Nalley BMW of Decatur. They charged me for an initial diagnosis which did not include any information from the EME module and stated that the 12v battery needed to be replaced, and then if needed they would perform further diagnosis for an additional charge. I paid for the diagnosis and the battery in advance. After replacing the 12v battery, the dealer test drove my vehicle and said it was performing normally, so I picked it up on May 6, 2022. On my way home, the car began involuntarily powering down again. I documented the error messages on the two screens with photos. I drove back to the dealership with one more loss of power on the way. At this point, the dealer states that the faults clear every time they power the vehicle on and that the vehicle is not repeating the problem when they test drive it, so there is nothing more they can do. I cannot drive this car as it is a serious safety hazard. I also learned that this dealer had possession of the car in 2021 and sold it at auction in July that year because it had issues they could not cure.Read more

SUBJECT: Recall Campaign 14V-176: N51, N52K and N52T Engine – Replace VANOS Gear Bolts, (This Service Information bulletin supersedes SI B11 07 14 dated September 2014). ... against my vin [XXX]. As per online research this is a known issue in my car model and NHTSA has already issued a recall campaign#14V-176 as showing at the top of this statement. I had this issue with VANOS for almost 3 yrs as car was throwing error message once in a while and engine hesitates and bogs at lower RPM. Rough idling/ increase in engine misfires, Increase in fuel consumption. I changed several parts to troubleshoot but could not figure out the actual root cause of this problem, until recently an independent shop opened the engine to change the Engine valve cover/PCV valve, when they noticed that 2 VANOS Gear bolts are broken. That mechanic advised me to contact BMW immediately and stop driving the car as this can lead to permanent serious damage to my engine and car will stall immediately that may cause an accident or a crash. I have always taken good care of this car and hoping BMW to cover the parts/labor cost under recall campaign. I would really appreciate your help is getting this matter resolved with BMW Canada.
