Vehicle died while driving, luckily it happened when pulling in to a store versus on the busy highway that we had just been traveling on, would not restart. BMW Roanoke determined it to be a failed diesel injection pump. If this had occurred on the highway it could have been a very dangerous situation. I had found that previous and later models of this vehicle have been recalled for this issue,
... but not the 2013 model. Which seems odd since the 2013 uses the same or a very similar diesel injection pump. The repair cost is more the vehicle value.Read more

I recently needed to have my Steering Rack replaced since the internal control unit had a fault. There was no warning prior to the failure and the sudden fault resulted in complete loss of power steering. Luckily, I was driving at a slow speed and was close to my house. I'm concerned because I have read of several other BMW models having similar problems and someone driving at a higher rate of spe
... ed could cause a significant accident if they are unable to control the vehicle. My BMW has 50,000 miles on it and I do not drive it aggressively, so it is very alarming to have a steering rack fail at such low mileage. I have since had the part replaced, but want the NHTSA to be aware in case a larger issue is occurring.Read more

BMW is not providing any owners with service and repair manuals in order to perform service or make any repairs. This is a safety issue, among other things,as these are adventure motorcycles meant to be ridden in very remote areas in difficult terrain where roadside repairs are often required. In addition, they are trying to force owner’s to purchase their services by not providing the required
... information. They are effectively restricting their use and creating a monopoly of who can service these bikes. These are causing safety and consumer rights issues.Read more

This vehicle shuts down the engine when stopped at a stop sign or light. The engine resumes when you press on the brake or gas peddle. But sometimes, the engine will turn back on for no apparent reason. That is not an issue of concern. BUT, sometimes, when the engine turns on automatically, it will drop the transmission into PARK. So when you attempt to apply gas, the car will not move forward as
... it is not in gear. This is intermittent. My German Auto repair shop has observed the issue and spoken with many other shops who have reported the same issue with the X3. BMW does not have a solution to the problem. The driver never knows if the car will move forward after a traffic stop, as it is not obvious that the transmission has dropped into park until you attempt to move forward. Instead of using this engine turn-off feature of the vehicle, they suggest turning it off to avoid the problem. That is a gas-saving feature of the car.Read more

High pressure fuel pump failed while BMW dealership mechanic was test-driving car after replacing two tires/oil change/replacing fuel filter/performing fix for recall of egr cooler part; per the service manager at the dealership, metal particles were subsequently found in the quantity control valve, necessitating complete replacement of fuel system. There is a known recall for year, make and model
... of my car (2014 BMW 328d) for the fuel pump, but apparently my VIN number is not falling under the recall. This issue appears identical to the issue the recall was issued for other cars with this same year/make/model. I have not performed the repair as they are quoting about $17,000 for the fix. There were no warning lights, messages or symptoms of the problem prior to this issue. In addition, they indicated I needed a new o-ring part for the fuel filter they were replacing as it was the wrong part, but they said it had nothing to do with the fuel pump. (Service said the o-ring continued to hold and was working as normal, and they recommended putting the correct by part number o-ring in its place so the fuel filter would not have come unsecured from its fitting in the future. They said the issue with the vehicle did not come from the o-ring/fuel filter; it is by their determination based upon the metal shavings in the quantity control valve, caused because the high pressure pump came apart internally and contaminated your fueling system. They said this is due to age.) They indicated that had the pump failed while I was on the highway or traveling I and/or others could have been seriously injured or killed. No one else has inspected the car at this point and it remains at the dealership for now.Read more

This is a serious problem with the handling of this car in standing water situations. This car immediately begins to hydroplane when it encounters standing water, every time. We had been lucky so far of the numerous instances we had encountered with this vehicle hydroplaning and rotating. Always slowing down when encountering rain to avoid these situations. Tonight 08-13-2022, we were driving on t
... he highway where the posted speed limit was 70mph. We were encountering on and off heavy rain. Crossing a bridge at approximately 15 mph under the speed limit in moderate rain when the car completely lost it's grip on the road and went out of control, like on ice and was unrecoverable. We were hit by a vehicle passing us who was not experiencing the same hydroplaning problem. This has been an ongoing problem with this vehicle and I notified my service advisor at BMW about the problem, but he said it was common and he had even been in an accident with his BMW due to hydroplaning. He said there was nothing they could do about it. The tires were in good condition, recently purchased, and there is not reason this vehicle should not have handled the situation like all of the other vehicles on the road were.(We were the slowest vehicle).Read more
