In November 2025, I was driving an errand on city streets in a neighborhood. Speed was approximately 30-35MPH. Two lane road. There were no hazards in the road and while I was descending down a hill, my forward collision/emergency braking system activating, causing my vehicle to come to a complete and full stop from road speed. This had happened several other times when reversing out of parking s
... pots into traffic or driving position but since the speed was slow and I do have cross traffic/collision avoidance, I initially I assume it was related to surrounding vegetation and sensor sensitivity. The issue happened again in December 2025 but I was moving at a much slower pace. In May 2025, I had the BMW integrated braking system recall addressed (NHTS #24V1040034860200). However, per the NHTSAA website, it appears there was a subsequent recall/safety repair required for the exact same issue, NHTS Recall #24V739000. I was not aware of this; was not notified by the dealership nor BMW and it could correlate to this issue. On June 4, 2026, I took my BMW to the BMW of El Cajon dealership in order to investigate the issue, as well as to address a nail in a tire and a brake warning light. Prior to attending the appointment, I noted the second recall for the braking system. However, the dealership is not checking or simply stating that there is no open recall on my vehicle which does not correlate with the NHTSA website. I am pushing this issue up the administrative chain of command but am very concerned. The dealership is simply attempting to replicate the issue without further investigation and refused to check the computer system nor the equipment replaced in May 2025 to confirm that there are no mechanical/system failures. Had this issue occurred on a freeway, I would have been in HUGE danger. I request that the NHTSA look into BMW and, specifically, this dealerships handling of mandatory safety recalls.Read more

I am filing a safety complaint for my 2020 BMW X4, VIN [XXX]. The vehicle recently began making a noticeable noise while turning. I reported this to an authorized BMW dealer before/during service and requested review for possible front-end, steering, suspension, axle, swivel bearing, tie rod, thrust rod, or vehicle-control safety issues. The dealer stated it did not find a swivel bearing issue, bu
... t identified worn thrust rod bushings and collapsed motor mounts. I was quoted approx. $1,950 for thrust rods and approx. $3,450 for motor mounts. I am concerned the worn thrust rod bushings involve the same general front suspension/steering/vehicle-handling system as the turning-noise concern I reported. I asked BMW North America and the dealer to review whether this condition may relate to or overlap with known BMW X4 steering/front axle/suspension recalls, including NHTSA Recall Nos. 19V678000, 19V738000, and 20V355000. BMW/dealer representatives stated there are no open recalls for my VIN and that BMW NA will not provide assistance, but I have not received a complete written explanation confirming that the dealer’s actual findings were reviewed against those recalls, campaigns, or safety concerns. On XXX, the service manager emailed that BMW NA Customer Relations allegedly said there are no open cases, the most recent case was closed, no assistance will be provided for suspension concerns, and the vehicle has no open recalls. The same email required return of the loaner by 5:00 PM if repairs are not approved. I am concerned this pressure is occurring before a complete safety/recall review is provided. No crash, injury, or fire occurred. I am requesting NHTSA review potential safety concerns involving the 2020 BMW X4 front suspension, steering, thrust rod bushings, swivel bearings, tie rods, motor mounts, turning-related noise, and whether additional VINs should be reviewed for recall/campaign applicability. During the second day of ownership I was driving with no vehicles in front of me and only oncoming traffic, and I heard a loud cracking sound from the windshield. It did not sound like something impacted the windshield, and I did not see any object coming toward the vehicle. Two parallel cracks immediately developed in the windshield beginning from the headliner directly in front of the driver's s
... eat, and they spread down toward the dash approximately 4", then the cracks turned, remaining parallel, and spread horizontally toward the passenger side of the vehicle. The lower crack stopped, while the upper crack spread the following day to the rearview mirror assembly. Dealership determined it to be caused by impact, but the manner in which the crack spread and the path it took suggests improper windshield installation from the factory and improper tension on the glass, perhaps from a faulty or improperly installed windshield clip. BMW online forums suggest many customers are having identical problems with windshield tension cracking on this generation of the X3, complete with narratives and photographs.Read more

My car began shaking at low speeds when turning. Brought it to a mechanic to investigate and they performed a recommended manufacturer alteration on the car related to rear differential vent. I returned home from shopping at local store 15 miles away. Arrived home around 11:30pm on June 3. Unloaded groceries and sat down. Around 11:45pm-11:50pm heard yelling from outside that our car was on fire. My husband ran out and and seen flames coming from under hood of car. I called 911 and within a couple mins middle of hood was completely starting to melt and components were spraying fluid an
... d popping pieces of metal and plastic were thrown everywhere. A neighbor proceeded to use 2 fire extinguishers to try to control blaze which did not seem to calm flames. Fire department arrived and sprayed down side of house and back of our other car which was parked In front of our BMW. Do to the extreme heat we could not get into other car to move it as it was parked by closed garage doors. Myself, our 2 daughter's and visiting friend were forced from the house due to concerns that the house might catch fire. We watched as the cars whole front engine area burned completely.During the trip to the store there were no warning signs on vehicle stating anything wrong. The fire marshal did a report on the fire and it was towed to local tow yard. At this time it is available for inspection. Preceding fire since it was unexplained to us we looked into recalls of the BMW and found multiple claims and reports for recall. Looking up VIN on NHSTA' s website VIN came back as "0" unrepaired recalls. We purchased the vehicle from a private dealer who never mentioned if vehicle ever had any recalls or had been fixed. And our search before purchase said there were no recalls on the vehicle. Due to the extreme heat our driveway was burned and our vehicle in front received heat damage to whole back of car. The fire was so intense that the engine area all the way to the back seat is burned. Thank goodness me and my daughter were not driving the vehicle at the time this happened as the engine fire burned quickly. This fire was not caused by arson or any factors under our control.Read more

I am filing a formal complaint against BMW Seattle for violating federal recall remedy mandates under 49 U.S.C. Chapter 301. The vehicle was delivered for mandatory safety recall 23V-707 after an on-road mechanical shear of the covered VANOS bolts. The dealer has created illegal commercial barriers and failed to fully execute the federal remedy. First, the service department issued a written estim
... ate for $4,405.67, claiming the CAS module and locks failed and required replacement to resolve a no-start condition. I challenged the repair on technical grounds and authorized a new battery and valid key only, the dealer admitted in writing that the electrical sync restored seamlessly and the engine started. They attempted to extract thousands for a functioning module before verifying the recall. Second, the VANOS bolts sheared resulting in certain valve-piston contact. The dealer claimed the engine passed a compression check but refused to provide raw ISTA diagnostic logs to verify this safety threshold. Instead, they demanded an additional out-of-pocket fee of $669.60 to re-perform a test they claimed to have completed, creating a commercial barrier to basic remedy verification. Third, the dealer demanded $2,136.69 to replace a compromised valve cover and PCV valve which functioned without issue pre-failure. Valve cover removal is required for vanos repair and requiring consumer expense for mandatory safety repair is legally prohibited. Indeed, Under BMW SIB 11 09 23, collateral damage must be routed through corporate TSARA, not the consumer. Fourth, the steel VANOS bolt heads sheared completely off. The official remedy mandates dropping the oil pan to locate and remove these fragments to prevent total oil pressure loss. Despite my repeated requests for verification of removal, nothing was provided, the car was inoperable, and I was advised that the recall repair was complete and the vehicle was in outdoor fenced lot awaiting arrangements for removal.Read more

The only thing they could suggest is that since it was sunset, maybe the car couldn’t see me with my sunglasses on. I am concerned because this could have caused an accident and that there is no clear guidance from BMW as to why it happened at all.Read more

The engine oil pump failed internally. The vehicle is equipped with a factory-installed variable-displacement oil pump that utilizes an internal thermoplastic adjusting ring. Due to heat cycles and mechanical stress, this plastic component degrades, becomes brittle, and catastrophically shatters or cracks. The first symptom appeared when the vehicle became entirely unable to complete an electronic
... engine oil level measurement via the iDrive system, consistently freezing and aborting the test at approximately 15% to 20%. This defect directly compromises road safety. A sudden drop in oil pressure causes severe internal engine friction, leading to immediate engine seizure or a total loss of motive power without adequate warning. Experiencing a sudden engine stall while driving at highway speeds places the driver, passengers, and surrounding motorists at extreme risk of a high-speed rear-end collision. Furthermore, a total engine shutdown disables power-assist steering and braking, making the vehicle incredibly difficult to control and maneuver to safety. Catastrophic mechanical failure from oil starvation also presents a severe under-hood fire hazard if oil leaks onto hot exhaust components. The problem has been officially reproduced and confirmed. The vehicle was brought to Bavarian Werkstatte, where certified technicians diagnosed the issue as an internal structural failure of the variable-displacement oil pump's plastic adjusting ring. The component is currently available for inspection upon request. BMW is fully aware of this defective design. They updated this exact component in mid-2020 to an all-metal oil pump to prevent plastic fragmentation. Despite knowing that the 2019 thermoplastic rings degrade, become brittle, and shatter under normal operating heat cycles, the manufacturer has failed to issue a safety recall in the United States, leaving drivers exposed to dangerous sudden engine failure.Read more

For my 2019 BMW X5 SDRIVE40i, The A/C evaporator core failed and began leaking refrigerant, resulting in complete loss of cold air from the A/C system. The vehicle had approximately 50,000 miles. The repair required full dashboard removal and cost approximately $4,500 including a rental vehicle. This appears to be a widespread issue on 2019–2025 BMW X5/X6/X7 models, suspected to be caused by R-
... 1234yf refrigerant incompatibility with the aluminum evaporator core. The leaking R-1234yf refrigerant is also an environmental concern. R-1234yf is a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) greenhouse gas with a global warming potential significantly higher than CO2. An uncontrolled leak of this refrigerant directly into the atmosphere — due to a defective factory-installed evaporator core — contributes to environmental harm and violates the spirit of EPA regulations governing refrigerant emissions. Consumers should not bear the financial burden of a known manufacturing defect that also results in the uncontrolled release of a regulated substance. BMW has not issued a recall or extended warranty for this component despite widespread owner reports of the same failure. I am requesting NHTSA investigate this issue and compel BMW to issue a formal recall and provide reimbursement to affected owners.Read more

On [XXX], my 2015 BMW 328i xDrive (VIN: [XXX] , N20 engine, 124,250 miles) suffered a catastrophic engine failure while in operation. Component/System Failed: The timing chain guides and oil pump drive chain module failed. The plastic timing chain guide broke apart inside the engine. The vehicle was salvaged and is no longer available for inspection. Safety Risk: The oil pressure warning illumin
... ated suddenly while driving at highway speed with no prior warning. Sudden loss of oil pressure and engine power while operating a vehicle at speed creates a significant risk of accident, loss of vehicle control, and injury to the driver and others on the road. Confirmed by Service Center: BMW of Springfield, New Jersey performed a formal diagnostic confirming timing chain guide failure and oil pump drive chain failure. A BMW mechanic performed a scope inspection on April 3, 2026 visually confirming the broken plastic timing chain guide. Repair estimate: $7,191.42. Inspected by Others: The vehicle was inspected solely by BMW of Springfield. No police, insurance, or manufacturer representatives conducted a separate inspection. The failure mode is consistent with the defect acknowledged in BMW NA Technical Service Bulletin SI B11 03 17 and federal class action [XXX] v. BMW of North America, LLC (D.N.J. [XXX]). Warning Symptoms: The only warning was a sudden oil pressure warning message on the dashboard immediately before failure. Prior to that moment the vehicle operated normally with no unusual noises, no warning lights, and no fluid leaks. There were no gradual symptoms or prior indications of impending failure. Vehicle was declared a total economic loss and salvaged for $1,650.00. No injuries occurred. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)Read more
