My car suddenly lost all power when at a red light in a turn lane on an active roadway. Fortunately, it was daytime because I could not turn on hazards or lights. I couldn't open the trunk and more importantly I couldn't shift into neutral because of the power failure. A tow truck was sent but he didn't have rollers and couldn't jump start the car, so a second tow was called. We ended up there
... with the car in the road blocking traffic for 3 hours. If it was night, someone could have hit my car. The car was towed to BMW and diagnosed with a faulty alternator, internal failure of the main battery and failure of the second battery. The technician said the battery failures were due to the alternator. I just had the car in for maintenance (at BMW) 3 weeks prior and no indicator lights ever came on. There are clear safety issues being stuck on an active roadway with no hazard lights for 3 hours because the car couldn't be shifted out of neutral to move to safety or for routine tow. The police came to try to help me and to stay with the car because it was a highway danger, but no police report was filed.Read more

I am writing to formally document serious and recurring safety concerns with my Certified Pre-Owned 2024 BMW X5e, which I purchased from BMW of Sterling on XXX. On XXX I was merging onto [XXX] during morning rush hour when my vehicle suddenly lost power and shut down in the middle of traffic. The vehicle first displayed a yellow drivetrain warning indicating that I could continue driving at reduc
... ed power to the nearest service center. Almost immediately afterward, a red drivetrain warning appeared instructing me to seek service immediately. At that point, the vehicle would not restart and continued displaying the error message. Having a vehicle suddenly become disabled in the middle of a major interstate during rush-hour traffic was both frightening and extremely dangerous. I contacted BMW Assist but was transferred among several representatives without receiving meaningful assistance. VDOT ultimately responded, and the vehicle was towed at my expense to BMW of Sterling. Ultimately, I was informed that BMW of Sterling could not identify the cause of the failure or replicate the problem. I was told that BMW in Germany had been consulted and that the vehicle's electronics had been reset. When I picked up the vehicle, I specifically asked whether it had been tested in electric, hybrid, and sport modes and was told that it had. However, my BMW app indicated that the vehicle had not been charged since before I brought it in for service, which raised concerns for me about the extent of the testing that was performed. On XXX, I drove the vehicle to [XXX], for work. When I returned to the vehicle that afternoon and attempted to start it, I received the same drivetrain warning messages. After approximately 15 minutes, the vehicle eventually started normally, and I was able to drive home without further incident. I am requesting that BMW North America open a formal Customer Relations case regarding a front differential failure on my 2023 BMW X7 M60i. At approximately 60,000 miles, I began experiencing a whining/howling noise that increased with vehicle speed, along with a metallic grinding noise from the front drivetrain area. The vehicle was subsequently diagnosed, and during the diagnostic process the fr
... ont differential fluid was drained and inspected. A significant amount of metal shavings and metallic debris was found in the differential oil, indicating internal component wear. I have photographs documenting the contaminated fluid and metal particles. As an initial attempt to address the issue, the front differential fluid was replaced. However, the fluid change did not improve the condition or eliminate the noises. Due to the continued symptoms and evidence of internal wear, the front differential ultimately required replacement. I am particularly concerned because this vehicle has been serviced exclusively by BMW since new and maintained in accordance with BMW's recommended maintenance schedule. To my knowledge, front differential fluid service is not included in BMW's standard maintenance program or service recommendations for this vehicle. As a result, I relied upon BMW's maintenance requirements and had no reason to believe additional preventative service was necessary. This X7 M60i is also our third BMW vehicle. The failure of a major drivetrain component on a properly maintained vehicle at approximately 60,000 miles was both unexpected and disappointing. I respectfully request that BMW North America review the diagnosis, repair records, and supporting photographs; determine whether similar failures have been reported on comparable X7 M60i vehicles; consider goodwill reimbursement for the front differential replacement; and conduct an engineering review of this failure for future tracking and analysis.Read more

I am reporting a suspected high-pressure fuel pump safety defect involving my 2016 BMW X5 xDrive35d, VIN [XXX], with approximately 103,186 miles. The check engine light illuminated and BMW Fort Walton diagnosed failed fuel injectors and recommended injector replacement. I subsequently had the vehicle inspected by Techmaster in Fort Walton, Florida, where metallic shavings and debris were discover
... ed within the high-pressure fuel system. After notifying BMW Fort Walton of these findings, I was advised that my VIN is not included in NHTSA Recall 21V-586: High Pressure Fuel Pump. I am concerned because the metallic contamination found in my vehicle appears similar or identical to the high-pressure fuel pump failure conditions addressed by Recall 21V-586. The contamination may also have caused consequential damage to the fuel injectors and other associated fuel-system components. I respectfully request that NHTSA review whether my vehicle, and potentially other BMW X5 xDrive35d vehicles currently excluded from Recall 21V-586, may be experiencing the same or substantially similar high-pressure fuel pump defect. Replacing only the failed injectors without identifying and correcting the source of metallic contamination could leave debris in the fuel system and potentially result in additional fuel-system failure. BMW Fort Walton has advised me that my VIN is outside the current recall population. I am requesting that this case be reviewed as a potential safety defect and possible issue with the scope of the existing recall. On most modern BMW models (with Hot V V8 engines like the N/S 63) the coolant tank that is supposed to last at least the lifetime of the vehicle, only lasts about 40,000 Miles before cracking. The main issue is that the tank sits over the engine, which when coolant leaks, it will leak into the injectors causing engine misfires. There is no warning to the issue until you have a low coolant, but at
... that point, the coolant has already dripped into your engine. Not only this but anti freeze can cause corrosion to metal, plastic and all the wiring. This can lead from a $400 tank to a 4 figure engine repair with no early warning signs until too late. Also environmentally, dripping antifreeze everywhere is not good…Read more

I am reporting a safety concern involving BMW vehicles equipped with the B58 Technical Update (B58TU) engine, commonly found in model years 2019–2021. These vehicles utilize a variable-displacement engine oil pump containing an internal thermoplastic adjusting component responsible for regulating engine oil pressure. Failures have been reported in which this internal plastic component fractures
... , resulting in sudden loss of or instability in engine oil pressure. My own vehicle has experienced this oil pump failure. The failure is particularly concerning because it can occur during cold-start operation and appears to be more prevalent in low ambient temperatures. When the internal component fails, oil pressure regulation can become erratic or be lost entirely. The resulting loss of lubrication can lead to severe engine damage or vehicle disablement. Reported precursor symptoms include an inability to electronically measure the engine oil level, abnormal oil-pressure behavior, drivetrain malfunction warnings, and other warning messages. However, these symptoms may provide little meaningful advance warning before the vehicle becomes disabled or the engine sustains significant damage. The safety concern is not limited to the cost of the repair. A sudden loss of oil pressure can cause the vehicle to become disabled without warning while driving or shortly after startup. This presents a potential safety hazard if the vehicle loses power or becomes immobilized in active traffic. The risk is particularly concerning during cold-weather operation, when these failures appear to occur most frequently. In winter conditions, occupants of a disabled vehicle may also be exposed to freezing temperatures while waiting for roadside assistance. Replacement of the oil pump is a major repair with cost ranging $6000-8000, even when engine has not been damaged. These costs are secondary to the safety concern but demonstrate the seriousness of the defect and the potential severity.Read more

I am writing to report a critical structural safety defect involving the front steering knuckle (wheel carrier) on my 2016 BMW M4 GTS. Upon inspection, the original factory steering knuckle has developed severe structural cracks on both the top and bottom sections of the component. Safety Risk & Hazard:The steering knuckle is a primary load-bearing suspension component responsible for securing the
... front wheel assembly, brakes, and steering linkage. Because this vehicle has developed cracks on both the top and bottom of the knuckle, it is at imminent risk of total catastrophic failure. A complete fracture of this component will result in immediate wheel detachment, total loss of steering control, and a severe high-speed crash. This presents an extreme and immediate safety hazard to myself, my passengers, and other drivers on the road. Manufacturer Awareness:BMW is fully aware of this inherent structural flaw. The original component (Part #31-21-2-289-301 / #31-21-2-289-302) has been quietly superseded by a completely redesigned, reinforced "v2" revised part to mitigate this exact cracking issue. Despite knowing that the original components are prone to dangerous fatigue and cracking under stress, BMW has not issued a safety recall to replace these defective first-generation knuckles on a vehicle explicitly marketed and sold for track-oriented performance. Action Requested:I request that the NHTSA immediately initiate a safety defect investigation into the first-generation BMW M4 GTS steering knuckles before a catastrophic failure results in a fatal accident. Furthermore, I request that BMW cover the immediate replacement of these defective components with the revised, structurally sound v2 parts at zero cost to the owner.Read more

The BMW B58 Technical Update (B58TU) engine utilizes a variable-displacement oil pump incorporating internal components manufactured from thermoplastic rather than traditional metal. These plastic internal parts are prone to severe thermal degradation and brittleness over time. Under normal operating conditions—and particularly during cold-starts in low ambient temperatures—the plastic element
... s suffer structural fatigue and catastrophically fracture, destroying the pump's ability to maintain oil pressure. A primary indicator of failure is the vehicle's inability to complete an electronic oil level measurement, quickly followed by a critical "Low Oil Pressure: Stop Engine" warning. This defect poses an immediate and severe hazard to motor vehicle safety. A sudden loss of engine oil pressure while traveling at highway speeds results in immediate oil starvation and catastrophic engine seizure. This causes a sudden loss of motive power and can lead to a loss of power-assisted steering and braking. Operating a vehicle that suddenly stalls or seizes in fast-moving traffic creates an extreme risk of high-speed rear-end collisions and leaves occupants stranded in highly hazardous highway conditions. Because BMW quietly transitioned back to a ruggedized metal oil pump design in later production runs without issuing a safety recall or notice for earlier models, thousands of vehicles remain on the road with an inherently defective, safety-critical engine component. I request that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) open a formal safety defect investigation into this component to mandate a safety recall and protect the public.Read more

I am filing this complaint regarding NHTSA Safety Recall 26V214 for my 2021 BMW K1600GTL. The reverse gear system on my motorcycle has completely failed and is currently inoperative. Recall 26V214 concerns the reverse gear control unit. According to the recall, moisture may enter the unit, causing internal corrosion and loss of reverse function. The condition may also cause overheating and, in rar
... e cases, increase the risk of a thermal event or fire. NHTSA currently shows my motorcycle as: “Recall Incomplete, remedy not yet available.” For approximately three months, I have been attempting to obtain the recall repair through an authorized BMW Motorrad dealer in Connecticut. The dealer has been helpful but cannot obtain the required replacement reverse gear control unit. I escalated the matter to BMW Motorrad USA. After written correspondence and two telephone calls, BMW Motorrad USA informed me on September 3, 2026 that it cannot currently provide a solution and does not know when the required replacement part will become available. I also contacted BMW in Germany but was referred back to BMW Motorrad USA and the dealer. There has been no fire, crash, or injury. However, the reverse system has already completely failed, and after approximately three months BMW still cannot provide the recall remedy, a confirmed part allocation, or an estimated availability date. I respectfully request that NHTSA review BMW's inability to provide the remedy for Recall 26V214 in a timely manner.Read more

Vehicle: 2021 BMW X5 xDrive40i (G05) Mileage: 54,423 miles Component: Central Information Display (CID)/ MGU (Media Graphics Unit) Head Unit Safety Defect: The CID intermittently goes completely blank without warning. When this occurs, the backup camera is unavailable, creating a safety hazard when reversing. Navigation, radio, Apple CarPlay, and vehicle settings are also unavailable. Failure Hi
... story/Diagnosis: The first failure occurred about one month ago while I was reversing. After several hard resets and leaving the vehicle unused for two days, the display began working again. The failure occurred again yesterday when my spouse started the vehicle. I took it to Bobby Rahal BMW of South Hills, PA. The BMW technician confirmed that the head unit (MGU) and RAM (Receiver Audio Module) are not communicating. The technician also found corrosion on the head-unit power connector and inside the head unit, suggesting moisture intrusion and/or an internal electrical short. The dealer recommended replacing the head unit, with the part costing over $4,000, plus labor and additional diagnosis to identify the source of the leak/moisture causing the corrosion. Inspection: The defect was inspected and confirmed by the BMW dealer. The failed component is available for inspection upon request. There were no police or insurance inspections. Warning Signs: There were no warning lights or messages before either failure. The display simply went blank. The failure is intermittent and unpredictable. Safety Concern: The CID can suddenly fail during operation, including while reversing, causing loss of the backup camera and other critical functions. Corrosion inside the head unit and on its power connector raises concern about a recurring moisture-intrusion or electrical/design defect. I request that NHTSA investigate whether this is a recurring safety defect affecting BMW X5 G05 vehicles and determine whether a recall or corrective action is warranted.Read more

The trim on the back of the exhaust is a rough manufactured cut on all their X5s and instead of filing the rough the edge BMW leaves this untouched. Was washing my car and ran my finger over the trim and it sliced my finger open like a razor blade.

I took my car to the Tigard Oregon bmw dealership for my three recalls that were needing addressed. I turned my car over to them in good working order. After picking it up after the repairs my service engine light came on. My car started knocking and rattling louder and louder. I returned to the dealership and requested they fix the issue. After a few days they contacted my and told me it needs a
... new engine. They say they checked over their work and the problem isn't their fault. I disagree. They say they found metal shavings in my oil. They did an oil change a week earlier and mentioned no metal in my oil.Read more

My vehicle was diagnosed in August of 2026 with a suspension thrust arm failure showing leaking hydraulic fluid. The repair cost was quoted at $2,200.00. I found on the internet a BMW of north america service bulletin that called out these thrust arms can fail due to "Various external influences can cause premature aging of the tension strut hydro-mount elastomer; whichcan lead to cracks in the ma
... terial, and leakage." The service bulletin noted that BMW covers repair costs (parts and labor) on this for cars within the new manufacturer warranty which unfortunately my car had just passed the manufacturer warranty. It is clear these have been leaking for some time and likely failed well before the manufacturer warranty expired but was only diagnosed later. This is clearly a defective part as noted by BMW themselves and for them not to provide coverage of this which is also a safety concern is what I am writing about.Read more

The roof of the BMW started delaminating a few years back, and it is compromising the structural integrity of this vehicle. In an attempt to fix the roof, epoxy was applied after it was smoothed down and the roof looked aesthetically pleasing for about a year, until it started delaminating rapidly in the same spots. Now, the roof liner is starting to collapse, telling me that moisture is getting
