TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 BLUE BIRD ALL AMERICAN SCHOOL BUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FOAM FROM ALL OF THE SEATS WAS COMING UNDONE FROM BEHIND THE SEAT. I WOULD LIKE TO CALL YOUR ATTENTION TO THE NEW DESIGN OF SCHOOL BUS ESCAPE WINDOWS. IN THE PAST, THESE WINDOWS WERE HINGED ALONG THE TOP AND SWUNG OUT FROM THE BOTTOM. THE NEW DESIGN IS HINGED ON THE FRONT AND THEY SWING OUT FROM THE BACK. I FEEL THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS TO SMALL CHILDREN WHO MAY ACCIDENTALLY RELEASE THE LATCH, OPEN THE WINDOW AND FALL OUT OF THE SCHOOL BUS TO THE GROUND BELOW.

VEHICLES ABS LIGHT CAME ON WHILE TRANSPORTING CHILDREN BUT EVENTUALLY WENT OUT. WE HAVE RECEIVED 10 BUSSES THAT ALL HAVE THE SAME ABS SET-UP AND 8 OUT OF THE TEN HAVE BEEN TOOK TO THE DEALER AND HAD TO HAVE NEW ABS MODULES. CLARK COUNTY SCHOOL BUS 29429 DEVELOPED A FUEL LEAK AT THE #6 INJECTOR WHILE IN OPERATION. THE FUEL LEAK WAS ATOMIZING FUEL IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. THE BUS IS A 2009 BLUEBIRD VISION SCHOOL BUS EQUIPPED WITH A C7 CATERPILLAR ENGINE. THE CCSD HAS HAD SEVERAL OF THESE UNITS DEVELOP SIMILAR LEAKS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE EXTERIOR REAR VIEW MIRRORS WERE TOO LARGE AND CREATE A SERIOUS BLINDSPOT WHEN ENTERING A STREET AT AN INTERSECTION. HE ALMOST COLLIDED WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE AT 5 MPH WHEN PULLING FROM A STOP SIGN BECAUSE OF THE BLINDSPOT. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 16,300.

THE TIRE SAFETY FACTOR WAS NOT AN ISSUE IN THE RECALL BUT SURFACED WITH THE LATER COMPLAINT. THE TIE ROD WEAKNESS WAS NOT A CAUSE OF THE RECALL BUT WAS A RESULT OF THE NEED TO INCREASE THE AXLE RATING. (I.E. IT WAS ONE OF THE REMEDIES). THE TIE RODS WERE SAFE AT AN AXLE LOAD OF 16,000 LBS AND NO TIE ROD RECALL WOULD HAVE OCCURRED IF THE 16,000 LB. AXLE WAS SUFFICIENT AS ORIGINALLY DESIGNED. THE RECALL WAS BASED ON THE AXLE BEING IN EXCESS OF ITS RATING AND THE MOTORHOME COULD NOT BE SAFELY USED WITH REASONABLE LOADING AND DESIGNED PURPOSE OF THE VEHICLE. IN DOING THE MANY LEVELS OF 'FIXES', BLUE BIRD HAS FOUND IT NECESSARY TO REDUCE THE 'NO CARGO', WEIGHT OF THE MOTORHOME IN ORDER SHOW AN APPARENT DECREASED FRONT AXLE LOAD AND TO SHOW SOME CAPACITY IN THE STORAGE COMPARTMENTS. THE UNLOADED WEIGHT HAS BEEN REDUCED TO A NON-STANDARD, 2 PASSENGERS AND 1/4 TANK OF FRESH WATER. (RIVA) THE NEW BAY WEIGHT LIMIT PLACARDS ARE MISLEADING IN THAT THEY DO NOT REFLECT THE FACT THAT THEY REFER TO THE TOTAL WEIGHT IN THE ENTIRE BAY AREA, BOTH RIGHT AND LEFT SIDES AND IN THE VERTICAL AREA ABOVE THE BAY, IN THE COACH.
