MMI system in 2020 Audi A4 keeps blacking out and constantly rebooting while driving. This issue happens while going in reverse, which crashes the backup camera and triggers a safety warning in the car. It also happens while idling, which also triggers a safety warning in the car about the backup camera being inoperable.

The vehicle lost power and became unresponsive while I was actively driving, putting me and others at risk of collision. In one instance, I was turning in an intersection on a busy road when the vehicle became undrivable. On another occasion, my child was in the back seat, and the car shut off despite both of us being fully restrained. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes. The service manager at Audi North Atlanta confirmed that he experienced the same issue when the vehicle switched into an inoperable state after he shifted his weight in the seat while driving through the parking lot. He has acknowledged this as a potential seat sensor or occupancy detection issue and is currently conducting further research. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Yes. The vehicle is currently under investigation by Audi North Atlanta, and Audi’s Technical Field Manager for the Atlanta region has been involved in the review process. No police or insurance representatives have inspected the vehicle at this time. MMI system / touch screen on dash is "Blacking out" during reverse backing. Cannot utilize the backing camera. Very dangerous when backing. Took car to independent dealer, with no certain diagnosis. The right back up light is defective. This light is in the right rear light housing that sits in the rear bumper. The defective light indicator came on before the 5 year/40k mile warranty had expired. The lamp bulb was changed as I believed this was the cause of the defect error. The bulb was not in-fact out, the power/wiring to the housing was not malfunctioning and the error/fault/malfunction is in the rear bumper light housing. This same issue with 2018 and 2019 Audi's was reported in a thread on [XXX] as well. I feel this is a manufacturing defect and repair/replacement should be covered by the manufacturer, not the consumer. The entire Audi command center constantly shuts off every 60 seconds, resetting. Losing access to radio, navigation, parking assistance, all features basically. Seems to be a very common problem on 2020 Audi models if you look on Reddit and there should be a recall.

Aside from being inconvenient, as you can not use media/navigation/etc while it’s rebooting, it also causes many safety features like drive assist/collision/obstacle detection to malfunction and not work, and is therefore simply outright dangerous.

Audi mmi/infotainment reboots repeatedly while driving. It removes my attention from driving and is extremely distracting. Also fails when backing up and back up camera goes black. I have not taken to a dealer as this has been a frequent problem among other 2020 Audi owners.

The warning ‘drive system failure’ appears while driving and tells you to stop the car immediately. This happens randomly while driving on a highway. The engine now makes a higher pitched noise and then the transmission will no go into drive it immediately goes into neutral, the car slows down and you must pull over as you have no control over the car. ... alerts that pop up with a malfunction- parking brake, transmission, distance warning, audi presense warning, tire pressure malfunction, transmission malfunction. BEFORE this- There was an issue found when a check engine light appeared after the car failed emmissions testing. Control Pilot Circuit High and AC refrigerant pressor sensor B circuit failures listed. The car went to Audi and they said it was an air conditioning issue and other faults. The cleared the faults and signed off on the emmissions paperwork. I told Audi of the issue when getting it serviced- they could not replicate the random drive system failure alert. Again the same issue- bring it to audi- they had it for a week or so- still cannot replicate the issue. A few weeks later while driving on I91, the driver system alert comes on and there was a high pitched sound car goes into neutral- I have no control over the vehicle and coast down 2 roads and into a driveway of a volkswagen dealership in an unsafe area of Hartford. I then started the care up and took it to Audi of East Hartford. The replicated the issue they said and replaced the entire EOC unit for almost $7000. They had the car for a month. Then after having it back a couple of weeks it randomly does it again and restarting the car would reseg it only once and then another alert and the car dies on the highway and I again lose control and pull over to the shoulder. MMI continously shuts off then back on automatically for the duration of my drives. since it is random, it has occured while on the highway where my collision warning does not intervene because the MMI is off. it puts me and others at risk since without warning it shuts off and takes 20-30sec to come back on but only for a few mins until it happens again. The infotainment/MMI system constantly reboots. This system is linked to the rear view camera, navigation, and hands free phone. When it reboots, those systems fail. This appears to be a widespread issue for the 2020+ Audis.

My media display will randomly turn off while driving, idling and parking. It will happen with Apple CarPlay connection and without anything connected, ie just listening to radio. It requires the whole system to reboot an attempt to login, which also often fails. The MMI spontaneously reboots numerous times while driving. When the reboots happen, the screen goes black and key systems such as the backup camera, rear obstacle detection, and navigation, become unavailable until the reboot completes and the systems reload. The last few days this issue has gone from happening once or maybe twice a day to almost every single minute I am driving the vehicle. Comp
... letely unacceptable and dangerous! Restoring functionality requires user input to get through the loading screens. The issue started in mid 2024 and the vehicle has been inspected by the Audi dealership (06/25), who verified the concern and attempted a factory reset (which did not solve the issue), and they continue to claim there's nothing they can do since their OBD scans return no fault codes, even though there are numerous TSBs (filed with NHTSA) that point to available software updates that should be applied to address infotainment-related issues. This appears to be a widespread issue based on the numerous reports found on user forums online, affecting the same model year vehicles (for multiple examples, refer to [XXX] ). It is also interesting that most of the users experiencing this issue, also report it starting around the same time and they all have similar software versions, and likely production dates. This should be considered a safety issue, as the reboots can happen in the middle of a reverse parking maneuver, and they render the backup camera and obstacle detection sensors completely inoperative until the system reloads. They also impact safety on the highway, as the reboots completely disable the navigation screens, and require multiple user input to restore, while driving.
