... -704 IS PRESENT IN THE AIRSTREAM INTERSTATE VEHICLES 2014-2018, UNTIL AIRSTREAM CHANGED THE DESIGN OF THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM IN THE 2019 MODEL YEAR (PRESUMABLY TO REMEDY THIS SAFETY RISK). THE RISK IS MUCH GREATER IN THE AIRSTREAM VEHICLES, HOWEVER, BECAUSE 1) THE MAGNUM MMS1012 IS (IMPROPERLY) MOUNTED ON A FLAMMABLE WOOD BOARD IN A FLAMMABLE WOOD BOX, AND 2) THE MMS1012 IS MOUNTED DIRECTLY UNDERNEATH THE SLEEPING AREA OF THE RV INSIDE THE CABIN. THAT KNOWLEDGE CAUSED ME TO FILE THIS BELATED REPORT SINCE CURRENT AIRSTREAM INTERSTATES HAVE THIS SAME ISSUE. ... IN NEW MEXICO. I PULLED OFF THE HIGHWAY AT A SCENIC LOOKOUT SPOT THAT HAD A LOT OF VERY ROUGH PAVEMENT. I ROLLED SLOWLY OVER ONE PARTICULARLY BAD SPOT BUT DIDN'T THINK ANYTHING WAS ABNORMAL. WHEN I REACHED THE DESTINATION CAMPGROUND THAT AFTERNOON I DISCOVERED THE TRUE DAMAGE TO THE LP FILL PANEL ON MY 2013 AIRSTREAM INTERSTATE. THE PROTECTIVE COVER FOR THE PANEL AND THE LP QUICK-CONNECT FITTING WERE MISSING. I ONLY DISCOVERED THE DAMAGE BECAUSE I WAS USING THE LP STOVE INSIDE MY VAN TO COOK DINNER AND SMELLED A STRONG PROPANE ODOR. I STEPPED OUTSIDE THE VAN AND DISCOVERED THE DAMAGED PANEL WAS THE SOURCE OF THE ODOR AS LOW-PRESSURE PROPANE WAS LEAKING INTO THE AIR RIGHT BEHIND THE REAR TIRE. I SHUT OFF THE PROPANE AND REPAIRED THE DAMAGE LATER AFTER RETURNING HOME. I'M THANKFUL IT DID NOT START A FIRE OR CAUSE OTHER DAMAGE TO MY VAN. ON THE 2011 AIRSTREAM INTERSTATE MOTORHOME, A MECHANICAL STEP UNDER THE SLIDING DOOR RETRACTS AUTOMATICALLY WITH A POWERFUL ELECTRIC MOTOR. THE STEP WILL RETRACT IF THE VAN IS STARTED, EVEN IF THE DOOR IS OPEN. I WAS IN A HURRY TO LEAVE AND ENTERED THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR. THE STEP KEPT PULLING ON HER FOOT UNTIL I TURNED OFF THE IGNITION WITH THE FRONT OF HER HER FOOT AND TOES JAMMED INTO THE OPENING. I HAD TO PUSH HARD DOWN ON THE STEP TO RELEASE HER FOOT SINCE THE OPENING OF THE STEP WAS PRESSED HARD AGAINST THE TOP AND FRONT OF HER FOOT. IF SHE HAD BEEN BAREFOOT OR HAD IT BEEN A CHILD'S FOOT, TOES COULD BE AMPUTATED OR THE FOOT CRUSHED AND PERCENT INJURY COULD OCCUR. SHE SUFFERED PAIN AND BRUISING BUT NO PERMANENT INJURY MAINLY BECAUSE OF THE THICK SOLE ON HER SANDLE HELPED STOP THE STEP FROM RETRACTING. AIRSTREAM LATER ADDED A MAGNETIC SWITCH IN LATER MODELS THAT PREVENTS THE STEP FROM RETRACTING IF THE DOOR IS OPEN BUT HAS NEITHER ISSUED A RECALL OR WARNED CUSTOMERS OF EARLIER MODELS THAT DO NOT HAVE THIS SWITCH OF THIS DEFECT THAT COULD CAUSE PAINFUL AND PERMANENT INJURY. HE AND HIS ASSOCIATE MADE EMERGENCY ROADSIDE REPAIRS BY SECURING THE FRESHWATER TANK TO THE CHASSIS WITH AVAILABLE STRAPS. THEY THEN GUIDED ME BACK TO THE AIRSTREAM SERVICE DEPARTMENT IN GLADSTONE THAT AFTERNOON AT LOW SPEED. THE NEXT DAY, I WAS INFORMED THAT ALL 16 BOLTS SECURING THE FRESHWATER TANK TO THE UNDERSIDE OF THIS NEW AIRSTREAM HAD BEEN SHEARED OFF AND/OR STRIPPED. AS WELL, THE STRAPS WERE BADLY DAMAGED. AT THAT TIME, MY NEW AIRSTREAM HAD FOUR MONTHS OF USE AND AROUND 3500 MILES OF WEAR. THE FRESHWATER TANK ITSELF WAS UNDAMAGED AND THE TECHNICIANS WERE ABLE TO MAKE THE REPAIRS UNDER WARRANTY. I WAS ON THE ROAD AGAIN BY 26 MARCH. I ASKED THE SERVICE MANAGER TO CONTACT THE AIRSTREAM FACTORY TO DETERMINE IF SIMILAR INCIDENTS HAD OCCURRED. ON 5 JUNE 2015, I WAS PROVIDED A LETTER BY THE FACTORY STATING THAT NO AIRSTREAMS HAD BEEN RECALLED FOR FAULTY INSTALLATION OF THE FRESHWATER TANK IN WHICH IT SEPARATES ITSELF FROM THE UNDERSIDE OF THE TRAILER WHILE IN MOTION. MOREOVER, INCIDENTS OF THIS NATURE WERE A 'RARITY.' THANKFULLY, THERE WERE NO INJURIES OR FATALITIES. BUT THERE COULD HAVE BEEN. THE PREVIOUS TIRES REPLACED WERE GOODYEAR MARATHONS WHICH EXHIBITED NO DEFECTS AFTER 12000 MILES. REPLACEMENT WAS DONE AS A PRE-EMPTIVE ACTION BECAUSE OF MILEAGE OF MARATHONS AND THEIR 4 YEAR AGE. WE SAFELY STOPPED AND FOUND THE TREAD HAD COMPLETELY DETACHED FROM THE TIRE, SEVERELY DAMAGING THE TRAILER. THE FAILED TIRE WAS RETURNED TO GREENBALL AND WE RECEIVED THEIR RULING THAT THE TIRE HAD A 'MANUFACTURING DEFECT' AND THEY WOULD REPAIR THE TRAILER DAMAGES BUT NOT REPLACE THE TIRE. THE REMAINING TIRES HAVE BEEN REPLACED WITH ANOTHER BRAND BECAUSE ON INSPECTION THEY WERE ALL BEGINNING TO HAVE SIMILAR FAILURES. THE TIRES WERE MAINTAINED AT 'RECOMMENDED PRESSURES' BY GREENBALL THROUGHOUT THE TIME I OWNED THEM. REMAINING TIRES WERE SENT TO GREENBALL FOR THEIR EVALUATION. GREENBALL HAS PAID FOR ALL TRANSPORTATION COSTS OF THE TIRES FOR INSPECTION. ... PERSONNEL, BUT NO ONE HAD A DEFINITIVE ANSWER. TWO THINGS THAT WE DID DISCOVER WERE AS FOLLOWS: THE FLEXIBLE BRAKE HOSES THAT RUN BETWEEN THE CALIPER ASSEMBLIES AND THE STEEL BRAKE LINES WERE BENT 90 DEGREES (+/-) AT THE POINT WHERE THE FLEXIBLE HOSE SCREWS INTO THE CALIPER ASSEMBLY. THIS BEND WAS A FORCED BEND IN THE FLEXIBLE PORTION OF THE HOSE. THE ROUTING OF THE FLEXIBLE BRAKE HOSES WAS SUCH THAT ALL FOUR OF THE HOSES HAD SIGNIFICANT ABRASION ON THE EXTERNAL SURFACE FROM RUBBING ON VARIOUS POINTS WITHIN THE FENDER WELL. ONE OF THE HOSES WAS WORN WELL DOWN INTO THE INNER BRAIDED PORTION OF THE HOSE. BASED ON MY DISCUSSIONS WITH THE SECOND OWNER OF THIS UNIT, AND HIS DISCUSSIONS ABOUT THE ORIGINAL OWNER (WE ARE THE THIRD OWNER), THIS UNIT WOULD HAVE APPROXIMATELY 5,000 (+/-) MILES ON IT. ONE WOULD NOT EXPECT TO FIND WHAT WE DID ON A UNIT WITH THIS FEW MILES. ON 04/21/2010, WE REPLACED ALL FOUR FLEXIBLE HOSE ASSEMBLIES AND RE-ROUTED THEM IN A WAY THAT WILL ELIMINATE THE EXTERNAL CHAFFING PROBLEM. BASED ON OUR FINDINGS, ALL OWNERS OF AS TT'S WITH HYDRAULIC DISC BRAKES WOULD BE WISE TO HAVE THEIR UNITS INSPECTED FOR FLEXIBLE BRAKE HOSE DAMAGE. *TRRead more
