Since the incident happened today, my vehicle has not yet been inspected. No warning lamps of any kind had been activated. The car was nearly brand new. Upon further investigation, there are numerous reports of similar events happening to Toyota hybrids over the years. A simple google search for this turns up many reports. These reports center around sudden loss of braking from the regenerative braking system and a "lag" before conventional braking is applied that causes the forward lurch due to the momentum of the car. Many others on online forums seem to also suggest running into this issue specifically when the wheels hit a bump. This sounds exactly like what happened to my car, causing it to lose control despite my having the brake applied. This is a follow up of an incident reported on 3/30/2025, after the vehicle was driven approximately 30 miles in the rain, then stopped for 5 to 10 minutes idling with windshield wipers on intermittent setting. The next day, 3/31/2025, the vehicle was taken to the dealership service department. The dealer stated that there were no diagnostic trouble codes stored in the vehicle computer, the battery was good condition, and the charging system was operating normally. They had no explanation for what happened. The service advisor suggested that when the gas tank was filled, it was overfilled after the gas pump clicked off. This, in fact is not the case. The gas tank was not overfilled. The service advisor was informed that there are other complaints online by other owners of the same symptoms under similar weather conditions while the vehicle is idling. I called wrecker service and set in the truck for about a hour waiting and nervous about someone hitting me from behind as it was a dangerous spot just around a corner. The wrecker could not get the truck in neutral after several attempts ended up dragging the truck to get it loaded. Since I was within a mile from my home and it was midnight on Saturday I had him take it to my home. Monday I called Thompson GMC and wrecker came took it in to the dealership in Springfield MO. Tuesday 8:30 am I received a text from service saying that it was going to have to have a new motor as it was completely full of metal shavings. The replacement 6.2 engines were on backorder and they didn’t know when they could expect them. I was shocked as I had not had any trouble and really liked my truck to this point. I tried to get dealership to trade for another truck but they didn’t seem to want to wait for the engine either and would not give much for trade on a 18 month old truck. Obviously, this is a frustrating position as the truck is a huge part of my life. In the last few days I have found that GM has known of the problem for some time and they don’t have a remedy for me to recover my investment in their faulty product. I saw on internet where NHTSA had more than a 1000 complaints so I decided to add mine. I asked if I could pull the car out of the driveway and he said no; he would send skids with the driver. Friday afternoon I was advised there was nothing wrong and to pick up the car. The work order is blaming an LA DWP 50KWh charger I had used 2 days prior to charge from 65 to 81% and recommends avoiding this charger. A arm broke while I was driving causing me to hit a pole. Service stability control and abs light came on in dash right before I crashed. Garage where vehicle is located said it was the an arm that caused me to crash. Had taken it to 2 different dealerships both said they could find nothing wrong prior to accident. My 2020 Honda Odyssey died at a stop light while driving on 5/12/2023. The auto on/off feature caused the van to turn off at a stop light and then there was not enough power in the battery to start the car again. It had to be towed to the Honda dealership where they could not diagnose the issue. They said the alternator was fine and the battery charged up fine. So no root cause found. Then 6/26/20
... 23 - I drove the van for an hour to the airport and back, parked it in the garage (engine off) for about 10 minutes, and the van struggled to start but did on the second attempt. Then on 7/7/2023 - my wife took the van to the store, came back home and parked it in the garage with the engine off. She came back 5 minutes later to leave again and the van wouldn’t start. The battery was drained. Now it’s sitting on a trickle charger just so I can take it into the dealer. On 7/10/23 - I had the battery replaced and the Dealer did some sort of warranty work to help and that corrected the issue. UNTIL it died again On 11/27/23, I had to get yet again another battery as the same issues began happening and it was deemed a “bad battery”. Throughout 2024 and now into 2025 I continually have the same issues where the vehicle will stutter but still managed to kick back on after an auto shutoff. I have been to the dealer countless times and they continually tell me there isn’t anything wrong. Something is happening that causes this - whether is an electrical parasitic drain or something else. I have heard that other vehicles this has happened to but Honda claims nothing. I also had a case opened with Honda on this that never went anywhere - Case #13952151 There is clearly something wrong and not being able to diagnose it is even more frustrating given the issue. The vehicle was towed to a dealer, and the transmission failure diagnostic result was confirmed. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The contact stated that the vehicle had been taken to the dealer a year prior to the failure, and the transmission was replaced. The contact was later informed by Car Shield that, per the pictures submitted, there was engine damage seen. The pictures indicated coolant intrusion into the engine. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the vehicle had been taken to a dealer for a routine oil change, and the contact was informed that the check engine warning light was illuminated; however, the dealer found no failure with the vehicle.
