VEHICLE PURCHASED USED WITH 47K MILES ON IT. BY THE TIME I NOTICED THE OIL CONSUMPTION PROBLEM (WHICH I CERTAINLY DIDN'T EXPECT) THE USED CAR WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED. I AM CURRENTLY BURNING 1 QT OF OIL EVERY 1K MILES. AS THE VEHICLE HAS A FACTORY 70K POWERTRAIN WARRANTY I BROUGHT IT TO MY LOCAL ACURA DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT THIS WAS NORMAL AND ACCEPTABLE UNDER ACURA GUIDE LINES. I EXPLAINED IN MY 38

THEY ARE CURRENTLY MONITORING THE CONSUMPTION NOW BUT I HOLD OUT LITTLE HOPE AS I HAVE READ ON DIFFERENT ACURA MDX FORUMS THAT ACURA IS DOING NOTHING ABOUT THIS. I DID READ WHERE HONDA WAS FORCED TO RECALL 1.6 MILLION 3.5L ENGINES FOR THIS VERY ISSUE AND ONLY OFFERED TO EXTEND THE FACTORY WARRANTIES AS A RESULT. THESE ENGINES ARE OF THE SAME BASIC DESIGN SAVE FOR THE ACURA 3.7L HAS NO CAST IRON SLEEVES HENCE THE LARGER DISPLACEMENT. I AM DEEPLY CONCERNED THAT THIS WILL CAUSE A PREMATURE FAILURE OF MY CATALYTIC CONVERTER AND SPARK PLUGS. I HAD BELIEVED THAT EMISSION REQUIREMENTS WERE TO STRICT TODAY TO ALLOW FOR ANY OIL CONSUMPTION (BURNING) UNDER THE EPA'S STRICT GUIDE LINES. I CAN NOT BELIEVE THAT IN THIS DAY AND AGE THAT THIS WOULD EVEN BE AN ISSUE IN SUCH A MARQUIS BRAND SUCH AS ACURA. SINCE HONDA WOULD FAR OUTSELL THE ACURA BRAND THERE WERE NO DOUBT FAR MORE COMPLAINTS FOR THE 3.5L ENGINE THEN THE SMALLER SELLING 3.7L ENGINE OF SIMILAR ARCHITECTURE. FIRST, I HAVE HAD THE VEHICLE FOR A LITTLE OVER A YEAR. I HAVE DRIVEN TO FLORIDA AND NC WITHOUT ISSUE. TODAY WILL BE THE 4TH TIME TAKING MY CAR TO THE ACURA DEALERSHIP IN LESS THAN 3 MONTHS. TODAY THE CAR STARTED TO KICKBACK WHEN I REACH 20MPH. ALSO, AT 80MPH THE CAR IS JERKY WHEN I ACCELERATE OR DECREASE AND GO AGAIN. ... Y. AROUND 60MPH THE CAR TENDS TO HAVE A SLIGHT JERK WHICH IVE NOTIFIED ACURA BUT THEY SAID I NEED A WHEEL ALIGNMENT WHICH IVE DONE. THE ISSUE PRIOR WAS ALL THE LIGHTS IN THE DASH CAME ON THE THE DRIVE FUNCTION WAS ALMOST PAUSED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION. ACURA CLAIMED THE ISSUE WAS MINOR YET I AM GOING AGAIN TODAY. PRIOR TO THAT ISSUE, SOMETHING NEAR THE TIRES WAS SCRATCHING OR SOMETHING WHICH THEY CLAIMED THE ISSUE WAS FIXED. TWO ISSUES WITH DRIVE-TRAIN: FIRST IS A GRIND/RUMBLE (LIKE DRIVING OVER A HIGHWAY RUMBLE STRIP) FELT AT LOW SPEEDS (20-30 MPH) WITH LIGHT ACCELERATION. SHAKES VEHICLE SLIGHTLY. CAN BE REPRODUCED. VEHICLE CAN ACCELERATE THROUGH THE GRINDING/RUMBLING BY FURTHER DEPRESSING ACCELERATOR AND SOMETIMES ACCELERATES THROUGH THE 20-30 MPH RANGE WITHOUT NOTICEABLE GRINDING/RUMBLING. CLE IS ACCELERATING SLOWLY AND IT DOES BEGIN TO GRIND/RUMBLE, MAINTAINING A CONSISTENT SPEED/RPM LEVEL (WITHOUT DRASTIC CHANGE IN ROAD SURFACE OR GRADE THAT WOULD CAUSE COMPUTER TO CHANGE GEAR DUE TO INCREASED/DECREASED FRICTION) THE DRIVER CAN CREATE A CONTINUED DURATION OF THE GRINDING/RUMBLING UNTIL RELEASING OF FURTHER DEPRESSING THE ACCELERATOR TO CHANGE OUT OF THAT GEAR/RPM/SPEED/LOAD COMBINATION WHICH RESULTS IN THE GRINDING/RUMBLING DESCRIBED ABOVE. THE SECOND ISSUE IS A WHIRRING/LUGGING DURING HIGHWAY SPEED CRUISING ON LEVEL SURFACE WITH D5 AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION GEAR ENGAGED. ONCE THE VEHICLE ACCELERATES ABOVE AROUND 45 MPH, MORE CONSISTENTLY AT SPEEDS ABOVE 50 MPH, ON LEVEL TERRAIN AT CONSISTENT SPEED VIA ACCELERATOR OR CRUISE-CONTROLLED, THE VEHICLE WILL FREQUENTLY INCREASE BY APPROXIMATELY 200-300 RPM AND BEGIN TO MAKE A WHIRRING SOUND WHICH LASTS A FEW SECONDS THEN THE RPM RETURN TO PREVIOUS SPEED AND THE WHIRRING SUBSIDES. A FEW SECONDS LATER THE SAME THING OCCURS AND THIS CYCLE CONTINUES THROUGHOUT THE DURATION OF THE MAINTAINED SPEED. THE PHENOMENON IS MORE NOTICEABLE WITH CRUISE-CONTROL AS THE SPEED AND RPMS LIKELY HAVE MORE COMPUTER REGULATION BUT IT IS ALSO NOTICEABLE WITHOUT CRUISE-CONTROL ENGAGED. MY CONCERN IS THAT IN EITHER SITUATION THE TRANSMISSION INTERNALS COULD BE WORN IN A MANNER NOT INTENDED BY MANUFACTURER RESULTING IN OVERHEATING OR BREAKING OF INTERNAL COMPONENTS THAT COULD CAUSE A SUDDEN AND VIOLENT REACTION OF THE SPEEDING VEHICLE.Read more
