Vehicle: 2008 Ford Escape VIN: [XXX] Component: Steering – Electric Power Steering Assist Recall Involved: 14S05 / NHTSA 14V-284000 Description of the Safety Problem: My vehicle is experiencing a recurrence of electric power steering assist failure after a prior safety recall repair. This 2008 Ford Escape was subject to Safety Recall 14S05 (NHTSA Campaign 14V-284000), which addresses sudden los
... s of electric power steering assist due to a torque sensor fault. This condition can occur while driving and results in significantly increased steering effort, creating a safety risk. Ford records show the recall was marked “completed” on November 22, 2014. In a written response dated December 22, 2025, Ford Motor Company confirmed that the recall remedy consisted only of software reprogramming of the Power Steering Control Module (PSCM) and Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). No mechanical components (including the torque sensor or steering column) were replaced. In 2025, the same steering assist failure recurred, resulting in heavy steering effort and renewed safety concerns. This indicates that the recall remedy did not correct the underlying defect. Ford Motor Company has acknowledged in writing that: The recall was software-only The recall is closed No current programs provide coverage for the recurring steering failure Ford denied further assistance strictly on eligibility grounds and did not dispute the recurrence of the defect or its safety implications. Because this is a recurrence of the same safety-related defect addressed by the recall, I am concerned that the recall remedy was inadequate, and that other vehicles repaired under this recall may also experience recurrence after software-only updates. I am submitting this complaint to request NHTSA review of: The adequacy of Recall 14S05’s remedy Whether a software-only repair sufficiently addresses torque sensor failure The safety implications of recurring steering assist loss after recall completion Loss of INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATIORead more

I own a 2022 Ram 1500 with a 5.7-liter V8 equipped with the eTorque (mild hybrid) system. On October 24, 2025, at approximately 1:30 p.m., I was driving southbound on I-25 when the battery warning light illuminated, followed by several other warning indicators on the dashboard. Shortly thereafter, the dashboard went completely dark, and I suddenly lost power steering. At that point, the truck was
... moving only on momentum. While I was able to brake and activate my emergency hazard lights, the vehicle eventually came to a stop on its own in a lane in the middle of the highway. Fortunately, traffic was moving slowly due to it being a Friday afternoon. This was a frightening and dangerous experience, particularly due to the sudden loss of power steering. I could have collided with another vehicle, or another vehicle could have struck me. I feared for my safety during this incident. The truck was eventually towed to a nearby Ram dealership, where the battery was replaced. I was informed that the battery had failed and, as a result, caused the entire vehicle to shut down. Approximately two months later, I began hearing a ticking noise from the engine—commonly referred to as the “Chrysler tick.” I had to return the vehicle to the dealership for a second time. Ram ultimately replaced the engine; however, I was required to pay approximately $3,000 out of pocket for the repair. Given these serious and costly issues, I am no longer confident in the reliability of the brand.Read more

My 2018 BMW M6 which cost me almost $90,000 suddenly lost its suspension balance and height. Driving got bouncy, axles lost balance, driving turned hazardous. It was diagnosed that , The Virtual Dynamics Management module was fried and defected. The replacement cost $2,571.40 which Irvine California BMW made the recommended repair. After revisiting and researching the root cause, speaking with
... BMW certified master technicians, with 50+ years of working on MBW cars said, they never seen this defect nor this module failed before. They shared that this looks like a design flaw, with no recall and no history. I sent a certified letter dated Dec. 22, 2025 to BMW North America CEO Sebastian Mackensen and BMW Global CEO Oliver Zipse. Unfortunately, both did not read the letter. I was told they are too busy with other things, which is appalling. The letter was passed to their customer relations. They shared with me and confirmed that although this defect is rare, they will not reimburse me the cost of the repair since my car is out of warranty. I am aware that the car is out of warranty however they should stand and held accountable to the quality of the module since there are certified technicians shared with me that could have been a design flaw. This is not a wear and tear tear. Even BMW Service acknowledged that fact, especially with the vehicle that has been driven 34,000 miles. I believe this is a Safety issue. Suspension drops, uneven load shifts, and potential next corner could roll. Again, BMW admits it’s rare—meaning they know it happens—yet they won’t cover it. That’s not quality commitment. Based on what they constantly advertise. That’s policy over people.Read more

While driving at normal road speed, the vehicle suddenly displayed multiple warnings at the same time indicating that AdvanceTrac (electronic stability control), traction control, and ABS were disabled, and the vehicle entered a reduced functionality state. These warnings appeared simultaneously without any hard braking, loss of traction, or driver input at the time. The warnings and system fault
... s then cleared in a cascading manner over a short distance, with each system returning one after another while continuing to drive, without shutting off the engine. After approximately a few thousand feet, all warning messages disappeared and the systems appeared to return to normal operation on their own. This has occurred more than once since ownership. The first occurrence happened at approximately 50 mph. The second occurrence happened at approximately 20 mph and occurred only seconds before an emergency braking event in the rain to avoid a collision. At the time the warnings appeared, the vehicle had temporarily lost ABS, stability control, traction control, and related braking assistance systems, creating a serious safety risk during an actual emergency maneuver. After the events, an OBD-II scan was performed and no stored fault codes or diagnostic trouble codes were present. However, for the next several engine on/off cycles, the steering and traction control behavior felt abnormal, as if the systems were only partially engaged, even though no warning lights or messages were displayed. No permanent warning lights remained illuminated afterward. The problem is intermittent and difficult to reproduce. No collision occurred, no repairs have yet been performed, and the cause is currently unknownRead more

To Whom It May Concern,I am writing to formally report a safety concern involving my 2018 Cadillac XT5, VIN [XXX] . Recently, my vehicle displayed a “Steering Assist Reduced” message on the dashboard while driving. This warning significantly increases the physical effort required to steer the vehicle, especially at low speeds, and I believe it presents a genuine safety hazard.Upon taking the v
... ehicle to an authorized Cadillac dealership, I was informed that the vehicle had stored diagnostic trouble code P0128 (Engine Coolant Temperature Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature). The dealer explained that a malfunctioning thermostat caused the steering assist reduction message to appear. However, at no point did the vehicle illuminate a Check Engine Light, despite the presence of an emissions‑related fault code.I am concerned for several reasons:A critical engine fault (P0128) did not trigger a Check Engine Light, leaving me unaware of any underlying issue. The vehicle reduced power steering assist as a result of an unrelated thermostat malfunction, creating a sudden and unexpected increase in steering effort. This behavior poses a safety risk, particularly in situations requiring quick steering response or low‑speed maneuvering.Cadillac has issued Service Bulletin 17NA158, which acknowledges that thermostat or coolant‑temperature‑related issues can trigger steering assist warnings. This suggests the manufacturer is aware of the problem, yet no recall or corrective action has been issued.Given that steering assist reduction directly affects vehicle control, I believe this issue warrants investigation. A driver should not lose steering assist because of a thermostat fault, nor should a vehicle fail to illuminate a Check Engine Light when a diagnostic code is present.I respectfully request that NHTSA review this matter to determine whether a safety‑related defect exists in the 2018 Cadillac XT5 and similar GM vehicles. On three occasions while the vehicle was idling, the dashboard screens and interior lights went completely black, and the steering wheel jerked abruptly in my hands. This sudden electrical failure creates a serious safety concern, particularly if it were to occur while driving at higher speeds. The dealer has not been able to reproduce the problem. There were no warning lamps, messages or other sy
... mptoms prior to the failure. There were no warning lamps after the problem occurred. The vehicle has been inspected multiple times by a Hyundai dealership. On one occasion, the dealership retained the vehicle for approximately two months but reported no definitive findings despite error codes being present. On a later visit following another failure, no error codes were recorded. The dealership replaced the head/stereo unit and confirmed no active recalls, yet the issue continues. This problem first occurred while the vehicle was covered under an extended warranty, but due to its intermittent nature, it was not resolved before the warranty mileage threshold was exceeded. I have since found numerous similar complaints online from owners of the same model year describing electrical blackouts and steering-related concerns. A Hyundai service manager advised me to dispose of the vehicle, which further reinforces my concern that the defect may be known but unresolved. I believe this issue represents a potential safety defect and warrants documentation and review. Thank you for your attention to this matter.Read more

My wife and I were driving to the dealer to have a safety recall service performed on her Jeep Wrangler 4XE. We had just merged onto the highway, I was in my car, behind my wife in her Jeep. Less than a mile onto the highway, my wife suddenly slowed down and moved to the right lane. As she moved over to the right lane, I saw her front tire violently wobbling back and forth. We slowed down to 3
... 0mph on the highway and after approximately 30 seconds the problem seemed to resolve. We limped our way to the exit (about another mile) and to the dealer about 1/4 mile off the highway. When my wife got out of the car she was still shaking, rattled by what had just happened. When we described what happened to the service center they responded "oh, you had the death wobble." After some research, I watched several videos about the death wobble, which confirmed what I had just seen. What if my wife had panicked and pulled over into another car in the right lane? What if she was on a small 2 lane highway and veered off the road and down an embankment? There were no warning lights or messages on the vehicle indicating any problem prior to this happening. This happened with ZERO warning and was terrifying to watch, let alone my poor wife experiencing first hand. The Jeep dealership has run diagnostics and report it is a bad steering damper. More than 3 weeks later the car remains at the dealership, awaiting repair of not only that, but also the safety recall fix for the hybrid battery. Communication from the dealership has been vague and suspicious in my opinion. They repeatedly have said they are waiting to hear from jeep on what to do next. My research indicates a previous class action suit relating to this "death wobble" issue on previous models. How does something this dangerous still happen on a 2023 model car with 19000 miles in 2025. I'm shocked at how casually the dealer and manufacturer have addressed this issue.Read more

At no point before the incident were there warning lights, alerts, or indications of mechanical or electronic issues. The vehicle had also undergone its regularly scheduled maintenance at the Tustin Mazda dealership on January 2nd, 2026, just prior to the accident. Given the sudden shaking, unintended acceleration, loss of braking effectiveness, steering failure, and non‑deployment of airbags, I believe this incident may involve one or more manufacturer defects affecting critical safety systems.
