I have owned my 2017 Honda Civic LX since it was new and have maintained the car consistently since purchasing it; the car is lightly driven and while over seven years old, only has 28,000 miles on it. In recent months, I had experienced some odd occurrences on the highway of my steering wheel seeming to stick when driving at highway speeds especially noticeable after driving the car for at least
... 10-15 minutes; there were no warning lights or other alerts on the car of a problem. I took my car to be evaluated at a Honda dealership service center in early May, as it was difficult to control the car within highway lanes, very dangerous especially in windy conditions. In that diagnostic appointment, a certified Honda mechanic verified the suspected cause of a sticky steering wheel - a failing steering rack. The mechanic could not explain why that part would fail, especially in a car with such low miles, as they said the problem was internal and could not be visualized. This is a known issue, and not just for the Civics and some other models from 2022-2025 for which there was a recall issued, but for the same generation Civics that mine is; there are many reports of 2016-2018 Civics having this issue around the 20-30,000 mile mark. After that diagnosis and being unwilling to pay out of pocket for an issue related to an internal component of an original Honda part, I reached out to Honda customer service. After spending a couple weeks communicating with Honda Customer Service and proving all the maintenance and diagnostics on the vehicle, they are unwilling to acknowledge this as an issue and have dismissed my case. I am asking that Honda be held accountable for this faulty part and stand by their brand and consumer safety, as this issue has led to crashes in Honda's with this defect.Read more

Report of Dangerous Rental Vehicle and Serious Safety Incident – Rental Agreement #289216922 I am submitting this report to formally document a serious safety issue involving a rental vehicle I received from Avis in May 2024. Several safety components malfunctioned and put the safety of my and my passenger in a life threatening situation. At the time of pickup, the vehicle had a visible dent n
... ear the front right tire, which was acknowledged by the rental agent and dismissed as cosmetic. I also noted a faulty rear hatch, which opened unpredictably and struck occupants in the head on multiple occasions as it behaved erratically. Over the course of the rental, the vehicle displayed additional signs of mechanical failure — including instability at highway speeds, loud squealing, and parts of the bumper physically falling off during the trip. On May 30th, while driving at highway speed, the vehicle suffered a sudden tire blowout. Critically, the onboard system misidentified the location of the blown tire, indicating the front right tire had failed when it was actually the rear right. This misinformation delayed proper response and nearly resulted in a rollover. We were stranded on the roadside for over an hour, narrowly avoiding several collisions. A critical system failure. A responding tow truck driver observed signs that the vehicle may have previously been involved in a collision — which aligns with the visible damage present when the vehicle was picked up. Avis has, despite multiple attempts, refused to confirm whether the vehicle was removed from service after the incident or whether any safety inspection was conducted -- we remain severely concerned for the safety of anyone else using this vehicle. This vehicle should not have been rented in its condition. The failure of safety systems, mechanical instability, prior collision damage, and the loss of exterior components created a serious and unacceptable risk to the driver, passenger, and others on the road.Read more

Steering Gear Rack - Steering control rapidly diminished over a short amount of time. Initially was okay but steering began to intermittently stick and wouldn’t self-center. Issue became nearly full-time within a month. Got to the point that it required a ‘tug’ to re-center. Took to a shop to additionally find that the boot clamps had broke themselves loose, causing the boots to separate and
... freely slide around. Driver seat airbag - service airbag system (?) warning on dash. Loose/bad connector in center console according to a mechanic leading to potential airbag deployment failure. Both of these issues are reportedly exceedingly common among RAMs, with steering gear racks extending as far back as 2013, and the airbag situation commonly effecting at least the ‘18 models. Additionally, Rear axle (passenger-side) - Shop discovered at the same time a seal had failed causing axle lubricant to spray onto hub causing extreme risk to breaking system due to the spray. Potentially lead to corrosion of caliper and caused advanced rusting resulting in wheel not spinning freely/easily. Driver side works as should. Warranty refused coverage of steering gear rack due to ‘improper installation’, as they claim, due to boots having separated from their respective mount points and loose clamps. Dear NHTSA Safety Defects Division, I am writing to report a safety issue I have identified that affects several modern vehicles, particularly from manufacturers including Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Ford, and Dodge (Hornet model specifically). This issue relates to the overactivation of the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system and related sensors, including wheel speed sensors, yaw rate sensors,
... and forward-facing cameras. Over the past two years, I’ve conducted extensive personal testing and analysis across multiple vehicles and brands. My findings indicate that many vehicles using modern ESC systems—likely built on common software frameworks from Tier 1 suppliers (Bosch, Continental, ZF, WABCO, Autoliv, etc.)—are exhibiting the following unsafe behaviors: •Overcorrection of minor road imperfections, such as slight pavement grooves or drainage lines. •Harsh braking or acceleration of individual wheels at highway speeds, triggered by incorrect interpretations of road angle or yaw. •Resulting symptoms include vibration, wobble, instability, and “bouncy” rides, which compromise vehicle control and driver confidence. •In some cases, fuel economy is also impacted, due to unnecessary braking and acceleration by the system. When I disconnected the four wheel speed sensors and the front-facing camera in a 2023 vehicle, the vehicle’s ride quality and directional stability improved significantly. This suggests that the ESC software is misinterpreting normal driving conditions as loss-of-control events and is applying interventions that reduce safety rather than improve it. I believe this is a systemic safety defect, potentially affecting millions of vehicles using similar ESC software logic. If left unaddressed, this could result in increased accident risk—especially at freeway speeds—and consumer mistrust in vehicle safety systems. I respectfully urge NHTSA to investigate this matter and consider whether a defect investigation or broader inquiry into ESC behavRead more

I find I’m in good company with other 2016 Civic owners, from the number of identical complaints on various automotive forums regarding this same complaint for their Honda civics. I’ve also noticed that “steering” has the large number of reported complaints on the NHTSA site (over 300 for my vehicle year alone).
